Getting It Right: Valkyria Chronicles

Destructoid says, "Upon its release in 2008, I felt Valkyria Chronicles would be the closest we’d ever come to having an X-Com sequel. And now, with an honest-to-goodness X-Com on the way, I wish we were getting a full-fledged Valkyria Chronicles sequel for consoles. Though both games are masterpieces in their own right, Valkyria’s world and potential continue to excite me in a way that marines battling space men doesn't."

I am always baffled by the decisions Sega makes in developing this series. The first game was a hidden gem that sold surprisingly well for a new IP.

To make (although very good) games of the series be on a portable that is basically 'dead' in the west is strange. Now they are planning a mobile game?!

Actually i figured out the reason why....Sega basically killed their own platform so there is no reason why they can't do the same with their franchises. A shame.

Couldn't agree more.
Why would you move from PS3, where they already had a great working engine and crew, to a handheld KNOWN for piracy.

Did they expect to do BETTER there? People have been dying for a VC sequel for the PS3. And Valkyria Chronicles did much better than the sequels on PSP.

Maybe they'll do a HD remastry like Kojima did for MGS:PW. I'd love to pick up VC II/III on PS3, even thou I already own them on PSP.

The sad part is Valkyria Chronicles 1 sold better in the US than it did in Japan. So what did Sega do? Make the second game strongly appeal to the Japanese, put it on their favorite platform and completely abandoned it in the West. My only hope is that the fan translation of VC3 gets completed.

Sega cares about one thing and one thing only (and strangely it isn't profit): Japan. A game could sell millions in the West, but if Japan didn't like it, they'll drop it or dumb it down (ala VC2) for the Japanese market. It's why you'll see poor advertising and support for their games in the West, because they simply don't care about us. As far as Sega is concerned, all we want is Sonic.

I'm glad they decided to bring Yakuza over thou.
I really love Yakuza games.

yea i was baffled too as to why they would move the series to a portable platform when the console version was absolutely brilliant. VC1 is my favorite game of this generation.

Sega has dropped the ball with every major franchise when it comes to support, or keeping it relevent in gamers recollection: nights, virtual fighter, shenmue, jet set radio, sonic, panzer dragoon, phantasy star, Oasis, and valkyria. These are the best games ever, yet they discontinue series' for decades, make crappy "hd" Ports, and hang their franchises up to dry. They need to step up their game. Literally.
.
I mean: valkyria 2 & 3 finally has a versus mode, yet its only on psp. Wtf?

This game is in my top 3 of all time best games. If you don't play this game you are missing out simple as that.

Title should be "Getting It Right But Not Doing It Again."

dc15071d ago

Yep!
Ever time they (Saga) released a VC on the PSP I just slapped my head Homer Simpson style - D'OH!!!

r215071d ago

Still cant believe they decided to make a browser game instead of full fledged sequel on PS3 and maybe the vita :L

Blacksand15071d ago

I still have VC1. I put VC2 on my Vita and i'm waiting for VC3.

Summons755071d ago

VC3 isn't even leaving Japan. Now they have some stupid browser card game, makes me sad to see an awesome series die =[

Sega is great for relegating its characters to cameos in other games. Heaven forbid they announced Valkyria Chronicles 5 or remaster VC 2 & 3.
