I want glass to allow me to watch spectator mode in Forza 4 on surface.

Neko_Mega5113d ago

IPad? Didn't Samsung already sent Apple back home crying? Because last I heard, Samsung made the best tablets.

Don't really care for tablets much, they are cool and all. But a PC will beat them no matter what or a laptop.

What I want to see is a smartphone that can play PC games (and no not by playing it over your internet or 4G).

kneon5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

But one of these new tablets is a PC, it's just in tablet form. It certainly won't break any performance records but at least it can run real applications and not just a bunch of half baked, mostly useless apps.

But this is nothing new, I had tablets running windows 3.1 about 20 years ago. Despite what some Apple fanboys would have you believe Apple did not invent the tablet computer.

@Psychotica below, the intel based one should run steam just fine, just don't expect performance to be anything to brag about.

Jdoki5113d ago

Nah, I've got a Samsung 10.1 and a new iPad, and the iPad spanks the Sammy in every way... build quality, battery life, quality of apps (especially games).

No idea what the newer Samsung tabs are like, but doubt they surpass the iPad by that much, if at all.

I don't think a PC beats a tablet in every case. I've been playing a lot of digital board games on the iPad, and the touchscreen is far nicer and more intuitive than using a mouse. Plus with Airplay mirroring I can play on my HDTV which is great when friends are round.

nukeitall5113d ago

These MS Surface tablets freaking rocks! I want one bad and it doubles up as PC. Hook it up to a dock and you got a full fledged PC with an i5. That is some serious punch there. The ARM version runs Tegra.

@Neko_Mega:
Apple is the only one that provides Retina Display on their iPad. Most other providers use a low resolution screen in comparison. Surface runs 1080p which is close, but not the same even.

Psychotica5113d ago

I will get excited when I hear that I can install Steam and play all my PC games..

Honest_gamer5113d ago

i really like this tablet might have to get it if its decently priced, i dont want it to play games either i have my laptop and pc for that

Jdoki5113d ago

I have a feeling the Surface RT (the ARM based one) will be similar in price to a new iPad, and the Surface Pro will be more business orientated and cost more. I didn't see anything about 3 / 4G in the models, so that should help keep the price down.

Be interesting to see how MS fair against Apple, as Android tablets are barely registering. As an analyst recently stated 'There is no tablet market, only an iPad market'.

One amusing comment I saw on another forum was 'Yay, so now people who don't want a Windows phone can not get a Windows Tablet to go with it'.

Honest_gamer5113d ago

i just want a tablet that i can take notes etc during uni lectures, atm im taking my laptop however carrying a 18inch laptop around all day gets tiring plus the lecture hall desks are so thin that the laptop will fall of if i dont keep it held down with one army lol, i would also like it to be fast enough for basic web searches etc, since im a web designer i need to make sure the sites i make work on different resolutions etc for instance the tablet i used to have while looked pretty good was SO SLOW and the OS was on 2.2 android this was only like 3/4 weeks ago (android is on 4 now, not sure if that's the same for tablets thought)

Jdoki5113d ago

The iPad is probably my most used device now, both for productivity and gaming.

Our company has started embracing the Bring Your Own Device philosophy, so we're seeing more and more people using iPads at work instead of company assigned laptops. There's a couple of great note taking apps. I use Notes Plus or 7Notes, as they do handwriting to text conversion which I find really useful. I also have no problem typing quickly on a software keyboard, mainly because iOS' auto-correct is so good!

I have limited experience of testing websites on tablets, but I do occasionally have to test a couple of sites on iPad, and it works well enough, but probably not suitable for your needs as all browsers need to be based on WebKit, so you wouldn't be getting the variety of rendering engines that the Surface could provide.

I'm not a big fan of the Android tablets, not because there's anything wrong with them, I just far prefer the iPad - but the Surface looks like it's a very good device, and may really suit your needs... Lets just hope you haven't graduated before it gets launched!! :)

nukeitall5113d ago

"One amusing comment I saw on another forum was 'Yay, so now people who don't want a Windows phone can not get a Windows Tablet to go with it'."

For everyone else, we are getting it. Apps that work on your desktop, on your tablet and on your phone? One app system to rule them all!

Also, WP7 is by far the most responsive mobile OS I have ever used. It's rock solid and has only frozen a handful of times since I bought many moons ago. It's a single core, but buttery smooth. In comparison, my Kindle Fire with Android occasionally stutters for no reason (with a dual core none the less) and freezes at least every couple of days with very light use.

Say what you want, but MS knows how to make an OS.

mcstorm5113d ago

They are saying the RT version will be around $300 and the Pro will be around the same price as an ultra book. If im homiest I cant wait to get the pro version and it is going to replace my home laptop and my Moto Xoom as I can do everything my laptop can do as well as be portable like my Xoom.

I really don't see a point of Android or the IPad once Windows Tablets are out are they are not limited like Android or IOS.

After seeing Smart glass Kinect Windows Phone 7 Windows 8 and now MS own tablets I have to say MS are really starting to up there game and I think they are now starting to leave the old Office name behind and are starting to get an apple type image for quality hardware and the software is starting to be solid now and im using Windows 8 on my none touch Laptop and I have to say I like it better than Windows 7 and never though I would say that but I do.

Just need a date for release now and I think MS are now setting the bar for HP Dell ect on what a windows tablet should be like.

Jdoki5113d ago

I can't see the RT being that cheap unless MS are taking a loss to gain market share.

Amazon lose money on the Kindle Fire and that's $199 and massively lower spec than the RT.

The specs of the RT are much closer to the iPad, so I would imagine pricing similar to the WiFi only new iPad, so between 499 and 699 depending on storage. Maybe 399 an outside bet for the lower capacity model, but there's a lot of tech and R&D gone in to that device...

Grimhammer005113d ago

I read that this win8 labtop will req. devs to build current existings apps from scratch to work with it.

If that's true....this thing is dead already.

Why would I (if I was a dev) want to bring my app to this device? Well...if it had a established user base then sure, because Apples app store is bloated and devs find it quite difficult to make money unless your uber enough to be on the front page so to speak.

But to get established - they'll need an app explosion so that users can get into it.

Smells of fail. But, MS have enough money that they can take losses until they become competitive I guess. Though the Zune says hi.

Jdoki5113d ago

The Surface RT is an ARM based device, so yes, any app would need to be re-written for that model. The Surface Pro is Intel based, so not an issue (I would hope!!)

As MS are making a big push towards ARM with Windows 8, they may have some decent dev tools to help transition apps from one architecture to the other. But it is a strange strategy to release two tablets on completely different platforms - I would imagine an uninformed customer would be hacked off if they couldn't use their apps on both devices.

However, going for ARM may be a smart move on the 'lower' end device, as the iPad is also ARM based, so it may not take much effort for devs to convert from iOS to the Surface RT; and it may even encourage some to develop for iOS and W8 RT at the same time - which would really help MS gain traction is the critical area where Apple rules... Apps.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio50d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing50d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9250d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit50d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing50d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9250d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn253d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn252d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown52d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay52d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay52d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac52d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger52d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300052d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde52d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde52d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_51d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
