Japan's bias to Nintendo needs to be studied..

I agree. I dont get it.

DarXyde33d ago

I don't think it's a strongly held Nintendo bias as much as it is a portability bias. It's not terribly different from western countries having a hardware power bias.

No culture is a monolith, but largely, you'll find a lot of consistency.

RaiderNation32d ago

Its not like there arent countless alternatives in the portable gaming space now though. If portability is so crucial for them, why arent Steam Decks and ROG's not doing gangbusters over there?

DarXyde29d ago

RaiderNation,

Because Nintendo has the IPs? If you're going to bother getting a dedicated handheld gaming device at all, why wouldn't you get a Switch 2?

But you also forget Switch 2 is backwards compatible so there's institutional buy-in.

While Nintendo dominates the dedicated portable gaming device market over there, I don't know if the same is true of mobile gamers, which is massive throughout Asia.

"If youre going to bother with getting a dedicated handheld gaming device at all, why wouldnt you get a Switch 2?"

@DarXyde

I guess because not all of us worship at the altar of Nintendo and think their IP's are in this "class by themselves" category of quality? I find most of Nintendo's games extremely dull and antiquated in their design. Plus, the Switch 2 launched already so far behind the 8 ball in power, even for a handheld, why on gods green earth would anyone bother with multiplats on it when it performs so poorly?

RaiderNation,

"I guess because not all of us worship at the altar of Nintendo and think their IP's are in this "class by themselves" category of quality?"

Why does it have to be that anyone is "worshipping at the altar of Nintendo"? Maybe Japan broadly, like every other person, just enjoys what they enjoy, and Nintendo greatly appeals to the gaming culture there? You're projecting your own bias here: you acknowledge that not everyone is a big Nintendo fan, and you'd be right. However it's also fair to say that everyone who doesn't care for Nintendo IPs bought a Steam Deck or ROG over a Switch 2. The matter is it's just very uncommon. You don't have to understand why people love Nintendo IPs, it's just what draws them. You and I aren't owed explanations for why people love these games. Personally, I enjoy them a lot too because they're simple but you can add plenty to them to enhance the challenge. If you ever play Mario Maker, you'll understand how remarkable the Japanese Nintendo gaming community is. For the record, some of those levels are so insane, and yet to publish the level, you have to beat it to prove it can be done.

"I find most of Nintendo's games extremely dull and antiquated in their design."

You can find them extremely dull. That's fine. I'll never understand the hype behind many things: Call of Duty, Todd Howard games, Taylor Swift music, etc etc etc. But clearly, my position doesn't really matter because there are a ton of people who love all of that.

Really, it's just a matter of stepping outside of yourself and understanding that people are into stuff you're not into. Doesn't need to be questioned, just understood that they're looking for something else.

"Plus, the Switch 2 launched already so far behind the 8 ball in power, even for a handheld, why on gods green earth would anyone bother with multiplats on it when it performs so poorly?"

Sounds like you understand that multiplatform titles probably aren't the priority here then. It's not about having the best tech possible. The most power doesn't really guarantee the best experience. It's about the games people care about. A gentle reminder that people back in the day in Japan bought the Xbox 360 at a decent rate just to play Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Tales of Vesperia.

Nintendo Switch 2 isn't your cup of tea which is fine, but not everyone cares about the things you care about.
