The Crimson Desert story isn’t great, but that’s on brand for the genre

Pretending that Crimson Desert does it any worse than most of the games in its genre (with the exception of a few, calm down) is being disingenuous.

We’re just supposed to accept that?

MrNinosan48d ago

We've accepted it with Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, The Ark, Minecraft, and many many more games.

Not all games needs a great story.

The story in Crimson Desert isn't very bad thou, it's just told slowly and often in a weird way. I actually start to like the story, even if it took many chapters for me to feel that.

However, I don't play Crimson Desert for a great story, I play it in the same way I played Elden Ring, Valheim, Minecraft amd other exploration based games.

I’d prefer a great story with great gameplay but this is their first single player game and the gameplay is great plusit looks amazing and runs great on the Pro. The beginning story throws you into a vague story in the beginning and that’s about all I know about it now myself. The devs have acknowledged the story isn’t the strong point and could be better so hopefully their next game has both.

mastershredder48d ago

We’ve?

I like the guy speaking for everyone/gamers (aka game-hero) ^ , nah bro YOU accepted that. Don’t include us in your Acceptance what could be considered bad/ lazy /bad design (or game types we may not like) That’s all you. We all have individual opinions and game preference types. You do you, but don’t say “we” when it comes to your opinion.

Story of Elden Ring is great, you just have to dig for it. There's definitely pros and cons with that approach.

andy8548d ago

Yes. Other games dont get marked down for it so why should this? Either all or none. It's a sandbox game, I'm playing for the fun and things to do, and on the latter there's more than 99.% of games and it's great fun

neutralgamer199247d ago

I hope they can update the story since they are updating everything else. We always see companies adding content so why not

camel_toad47d ago

They've acknowledged that they wish they'd done better with the story so they may address it later like youre hoping. They've certainly been swiftly addressing the QoL stuff. Much faster than a lot of other devs do at least.

isarai_lee47d ago

If the shift in focus shows then yes. Plenty of games have a focus, these days most big titles are all about story but gameplay is pretty stabdard while interactivity and attention to detail take a backseat, this is just the opposite. It's not like it has an "ok" story and everything else is also "ok" there's a plethora of things this game does far FAR above any other game atm, so yes the story being just a means to lure you around the world is fine.

These types of games, I just always go off and do my own thing anyway. To this day, despite however many replays I've done now, I've never once completed Skyrim, in fact, I've never even gotten my "dah" for "Fus Roh Dah". I always get too sidetracked.

mastershredder48d ago

All that Crimson and Desert … It really does just cross the T and do the I.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH47d ago

I couldn’t care less to be honest. I spend my in game days mining to upgrade all my gear and hunting armor. This is turning into my favorite game of all time. There’s just sooooo much to do but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Sure I could blow through the campaign but you’ll be missing out on tons of other things to do.

Good score.
I’ll admit this game does get better at like the 20hour mark.
Had to force myself since I bought it but with the way pearl abyss is updating is definitely an 8-8.5 now. Side quest is still a chore. Especially when I have to follow someone and they slow ass hell. Biggest gripe is some quest has me going hella far and then the person move to somewhere even further to complete. Like why lol

what a garbage crimson desert review. seriously go F yourselves . there is no way in hell i can take edge seriously after such a blatant dumb review

Obelisk9236d ago

Call me a fool, but I like those scores. I can understand why someone would rate CD an 8 or higher, but I also understand why someone would rate it a 5.
Marathon is goated so well deserved.

andy8536d ago

A 5 😂 it just getting funnier. I'm baffled what the agenda is from some of these outlets

Yi-Long36d ago

Super Meat Boy 3D a 4 seems ridiculously low.

A 5 for Crimson Desert will probably be another stain on Edge's already very spotty record.

andy8535d ago

It's madness. In all my years of gaming I've never seen critic reviews and player reviews have such disparity. It's like they're playing a different game

garos8235d ago

its insane isnt it? i mean what game are these clowns playing? im playing on base ps5 , the game looks , plays , great. so much stuff to do and im constantly thinking about the game even when im at work. ive been gaming since the mid 90s , its been a while since ive had this sense of wonder as i do for CD

coolbeans35d ago

I typically don't join the chorus here, but my personal beef is GreedFall only netting a 5. Figured they'd at least give a bit more credit to Spiders rolling the dice by going quasi-turn-based.
