Slaps head* sigh Hollow Knight is not a souls like 2d game by any stretch of the imagination. It is a standard metroidvania. It doesn't carry the standard difficulty of a soul's game nor the movement of a soul's game.

MrWood195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

Hard disagree. It’s literally the closest thing to a 2d souls like— respawning enemies, loss on death, rpg lite upgrades with charms/weapons, the most challenging bosses than any metroidvania I’ve played.. and I’ve played A LOT

Goodguy01197d ago

Idk, most "soulslike" 2d game to me are more metroidvania and more similar to the hard classic 2d games back in the day. I think souls definitely inspired devs to make games hard again though.

Noskypeno196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

Games have ALWAYS been difficult, you just had to CHOOSE the hardest difficulty if you were a hardcore gamer and some games have MODs to make them even more difficult. I enjoy souls like games from time to time , and no they are not more challenging than Tlou or Halo on hardest difficulty especially with the extra modifications. But sometimes I just want to relax after a hard day and not need to memorize a fight pattern while still being challenged.

The more souls games being made the more likely there will be innovation

Babadook7293d ago

Yeah I agree. Like I can only see more games of a genre hurting innovation in games outside the genre.

Cacabunga293d ago

I’d rather have souls clones than gaas garbage..

We need more die 50 times on boss 1 to get gurd! :-(

Armaggedon293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

Depends. Is it “you died 50 times because you need to learn the games mechanics” or is it “you die 50 times because f you, no defensive options and heres a blindfold?” If its the former, sure. The latter, Ill pass.

innovation is up to the individuals making games. Too much of something often leads to fatigue and criticism which would lead to innovation so that things feel fresh and new.

toxic-inferno293d ago

Exactly. This has happened with almost every popular genre. The industry was flooded with first person shooters because of their early popularity. Then in order to stand out from the crowd, they were forced to innovate, causing the genre to split into several sub-genres.

Reducing the number of Soulslike games would massively reduce innovation, as each game that got released would get away with being another standard Soulslike and nobody would complain.

Jared2500293d ago

I once heard someone call this genre “rollslop”

Armaggedon293d ago

Yeah, there are alot of them. But some of them have just enough quirks or differences to welcome different people. I typically cant stand souls games, especially fromsoft ones. But every now and then you get a Nioh, a Wuchang, or a steel rising.
