I would like them to go back to reason just for PlayStation to wake up

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

@cacabunga
PlayStation is awake, what you are complaining about is that gaming economics has changed.

Lightning7736d ago

For this gen yeah it's done no point now but next gen they can go back to exclusives. How else are they suppose to sell their next console?

Extermin8or3_35d ago

You think the hybrid pc with an xbox brand is going to sell any better than current gen xbox? If they cut price of games pass its going to go back to costing more to run than the profit they make. They made the changes they made out of necessity forced to by higher ups who had shareholders breathing down their neck. The new head of Microsoft Gaming may now want to reverse that but the genie doesnt go back in the bottle that easily. They'd have to run large losses for years in the hope that it drives adoption which I'd say it moat likely won't.

GhostScholar35d ago

Game pass will be their supposed selling point.

Jin_Sakai35d ago

“For this gen yeah it's done no point now but next gen they can go back to exclusives. How else are they suppose to sell their next console?”

Their user base has mostly moved on. Xbox sales have been dire for two generations and that’s when they had exclusives. You think bringing them back will change things? I highly doubt it.

S2Killinit34d ago

Or pretend to go back to exclusives and caring about consoles. They’ve lost that war, they are now just managing their new vision.

DarXyde34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I'm sceptical about this argument.

The next Xbox is supposed to be quite expensive. If they want to develop games exclusively for hardware very few will buy, I hope they're all super budget friendly titles then because they're not going to move software either.

Second, the entire reason the acquisition of ABK went through was that games would be on other platforms too. Maybe this doesn't apply to Bethesda/ABK/Mojang games, but if it does, no way this ends well for them.

Third, it doesn't matter whatsoever that "Xbox is reportedly debating" this. If Microsoft was reportedly debating this, there would be merit. Nadella is far too greedy to rely on Xbox to sell games. He knows the math can't math with Xbox exclusivity. He cares about most active users, and the moment you cut out other platforms and report your numbers to stakeholders, company value goes into free fall.

The issue with Microsoft's most active users strategy is they were behind, and now they're engagement looks massive.... But if PlayStation does the same thing and cut out PC (and even if they released their games on Xbox), the difference is relatively negligible.

Not really. The games that came to PS are ones that were older. Halo 1, Gears 1, Forza Horizon 5... I can see them holding the new installments exclusive to XB/PC for a period of time. Much like Sony has done with some of their games. It gives their player base something to play and then after 6 months or a year... PS players can enjoy them too. Or they can simply not release on PS and say it was a test like Sony has said about their PC releases.

But its not too late for things to change.

Extermin8or3_35d ago

It's far too late because the next xbox IS going to cost a hell of alot more than the next PlayStation. Thr fact the die size is like double the size indicates this. It will be more powerful in terms of rasterisation but with diminishing returns that won't be the end of the world and with the ps6 likely to be expensive but a hell of alot less expensive (and Sony able to subsidise the price k owing their consumers buy alot of games that they get a cut of, whereas the xbox will apparently have steam - meaning ms will miss out on any cut of alot of 3rd party sales)... it's not gonna sell all that much. All they would do is kill any of the big franchises they make exclusive. They stopped being exclusive because they need to make money as shareholders won't tolerate the division pulling massive losses not after the investment they made into it, money they want a return on in near future.

DarXyde33d ago

I don't know how to say this without coming across as painfully biased but it's true: you can't really hold PlayStation and Xbox in the same standard.

Sony is like Nintendo in that they hold their IPs with a certain prestige and exclusivity (Nintendo more so). The very idea of their games going to other platforms always felt like a long shot because they sell well on their home platforms. Xbox is literally a Microsoft product. The same Microsoft that owns Windows, the most popular computer operating system for gaming. It was never a long shot that it would stay within that Microsoft ecosystem at all, but as soon as it became apparent that the gains made during Xbox 360 were diminishing, you're now looking at a very core Xbox fan base that continue to buy into the ecosystem. And frankly, it's not really enough to sustain them in the current era of game development (PC costs don't help that either).

The calculation people generally make is pretty clear: you can buy an Xbox and miss PlayStation games, or you can buy a PlayStation and get Xbox games.

Very likely, the damage has already been done. People are not going to buy an Xbox to play Gears now. If anything, they'll buy a PlayStation and wait for Gears to come later. Even if Microsoft has no plan to ever release it, they'll see clearly that people aren't buying an Xbox for Gears and the expectation of it going elsewhere will basically manifest it into reality.

These games sell really well on PlayStation, and even if Xbox wants exclusives, if it doesn't yield expected results quickly, I'm doubtful Nadella will stand for that.

Lightning7735d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@exterminator. They'll have bigger issues if they make a strong hardware like that only to sell way worse than the X series and lose out on more money. Would be absolutely pointless if they dont at least attempt to compete.

Those Profit margins were ridiculous even internally at MS. They wouldn't be trying to lower the price of GP, get rid if this is an Xbox campaign or, "going back to Xbox"

Not saying the exclusives would be permanent but they need compelling software that can only be played on Xbox (and PC of course) for a handful of years. The genie can definitely be put back in the bottle. Advertising the console and its games.

@Ghost no GP wouldn't be a selling point at all. Price and games come first. Service and features come second.

Reaper22_35d ago

I dont think they're worried to much about how much Helix will sell. With Helix rumored to be $1000.00 or more there's no way it'll outsell series x and s. But the good thing is theystill have about 40 million series consoles out there in the ecosystem. And being able to play your games anywhere is one advantage they do have. They're not gonna move many playstation gamers over to their side but a lot of PC only gamers are definitely gonna buy it.

1Victor35d ago

@ lighting and all the others that think this exclusive next gen games will work I got this to say.
10 years and investors
think about it and figure it out.
You too with the new account

Reaper22_35d ago

Nah, its never too late. Only a small percentage of xbox games are available on playstation. If its too late for them its too late for sony as well pulling a 180 on games going to PC.

tay870135d ago

Not the same at all. Playstation made less than 1% of their revenue from PC. Xbox is completely reliant on other platforms. I hope they are dumb enough to try it, the xbox division will fold like a cheap suit.

babadivad34d ago

Once they announced fucking HALO on PS5, it was already over.

And all of a sudden being able to play anywhere and exclusives being anticonsumer is gone just like that, huh.

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I think they are acting a bit also. Profit is all that matters. Now they can claim thry had to do exclusives when they promised they wouldn’t keep ABK games that used to be multiplatform from reaching consumers, and they will also promise the world at the beginning of next gen (like every generation).

MS killed the Xbox brand, who will they sell exclusives too?

The piggies at MS got too greedy. MS are a creatively bankrupt all consuming blob that decided to buy up and consolidate a huge part of a creative industry to buy success and control but all they've achieved in that time is to make people like Bobby Kotick even richer whilst firing thousands. I wonder how long before the industry starts paying an even bigger price for MS's greed?

Reaper22_35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Mr Dead, you are dead wrong as usual.

Microsoft isn't the one locking games behind a service and not investing in backwards compatibility for the games you own.Now that's what you call greed.

MrDead34d ago

Aww, it's so special that you think those are even comparable.

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

What do you mean, all consoles are doing that. Especially xbox.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio20d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
