With spellbinding combat and high-concept maps, Marathon is far more than a cool aesthetic draped over the bones of an extraction shooter. Eurogamer's review.

No thanks, I think I trust the noise more than the games journalists.

TriniOutsider53d ago

What noise? Are you talking about all the alt-right YouTube channels that keep calling the game woke and trash?

Alos8853d ago

Oh lord... let's please try to keep the tired political rhetoric out of this please, it's always a smokescreen for those that otherwise have no points to make.

In statistics, we rely a lot on inferential statistics. A big one for us is something called regression analysis. There are many types of regression, but I'll use layman terms here and say that we use it to plot the relationship between a dependent variable and 1+ independent variables. The beauty of a regression is that it tells us the nature of the relationship between each IV and the DV, like gas mileage as the DV and whether or not a car is foreign and weight of the car as IVs - in which case, we do see that for every "unit" increase in weight, gas mileage decreases by x miles per gallon. Nifty little metric, but there are other factors likely at play. Things we cannot control/account for in a model such as driving speed, road quality, and to some extent tire pressure.

When we talk about games, we can say the score is a dependent variable and there are multiple predictor variables we can consider, such as genre familiarity of the reviewers, the quality of the game, replayability, content, studio, etc. In fact, Metacritic makes good use of statistics to establish a pattern, which is used to establish trends and when we have good consistency, we can more accurately attribute predictors to the score. But remember what I said: some things are unrealistic to control for. Things that affect the score that we can't do much about that has nothing to do with game quality. Things like subjectivity, industry dynamics (e.g., zeitgeist), and measurement error.

You know what we call that which affects the score of a game that doesn't have any predictive value but weighs on the score? We call that noise. So what you're really saying is you're fine with listening to the people who see that the game is scoring well and still said "I don't care, I just don't like it because I don't like it", you're giving outsized priority to the people who believe the game came out "at the wrong time", and willfully fine with agreeing with low reviews where their metric systems are problematic.

I have no dog in this race, but when you say you'll listen to the noise, that sounds wild to me.

When games journalism has become as skewed towards propping up certain types of games as it has, the harder it leans towards trying to tell me something is great when external evidence claims otherwise the more inclined I am to actively ignore those reviews as shilling.
Marathon is a 7, not a 9, and that's coming from friends of mine that have actually played it. People I trust far more than any outlet.

MIDGETonSTILTS1752d ago

Marathon is a 10 if you enjoy stealth games.

It’s a 7 if you don’t like stealth, AND you don’t have friends to play with.

These caveats make it an objective 8-9, but stealth fans like myself WILL rate it a 10.

Will you trust the noice if it say jump of the 30th floor with me.

Just a reminder, eurogamer are the most horrible reviewers on this planet, never trust them, they only criteria for games is how lgbtq it is, the more, the bigger the score they give

Alos8852d ago

It's wild to me how many here are willing to shill for games journalists apparently. People that give skewed reviews not because a game is good, but because it aligns with their beliefs. If that's their idea of being worthy of an upvote then please, vote me down.

The 'noise' wasn't constantly telling me the games I liked were bad, and that I was bad for liking them. That by itself makes it far more valuable than the empty words of modern games journalism, which largely exists to prop up an ever-shrinking circle of influence.

Huey_My_D_Long52d ago

Shill? I just dont think you guys understand how reviews work. Basically opinion articles on a product. Every review, No matter who writes it. Its subjective. And so many different names. I could see someone honestly not being a fan of a Particular Reviewer, maybe their tastes are completely different and thats fine.
All that shit about the Noise. yeah sure buddy maybe for you.

What Games are you talking about that people said that you were a bad person for liking? I really wanna hear what's the basis for this specific persecution complex.

“ Is it April fools day again?

The game is dead.

EDIT: the numbers are fudged. “digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data”

Does it hurt you to hear a SONY game was BEST selling ?
You gotta let go of those OBCURED feelings 🤷🏿

Neonridr30d ago

I mean the only reason MLB was the best selling title was because it was multi-platform. Likewise with Marathon. Will ring true for MS games. Only Nintendo titles are truly flexing their muscles when they chart as they are only to be found there.

S2Killinit30d ago

So that means we are going to act like it wasn’t best selling?

Neonridr30d ago

@S2Killinit - no it means that it was not entirely due to Sony.

VersusDMC29d ago

"Leading the way was MLB The Show 26. And while digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data, it still found its way to the number one spot despite only being on the market for two weeks at the time."

Don't let your nintendo bias get ahead of you and just lie...

It's kinda funny how this Obscure guy lives rent-free in your head. lol

Does Phil also live there?

I’m sorry did you wrote something smart ?
Or are you trying to to be funny because you failed at both
Now kid run to mommy legs the grown ups are talking.
Don’t bother writing anything I will not respond to a bratty child like you

jambola30d ago

you know when you hit caps lock you can turn it off before finishing a word right?
it's not a commitment

1Victor29d ago

I was typing on my old iPad with near full memory and it was acting up 🤷🏿

Outside_ofthe_Box30d ago

Can't wait to see how this is spun negatively. 😜

-Foxtrot30d ago

Yeah sure, yet the player count is no where near what they want for a AAA game with so much money behind it

Why people are trying to spin this game like it’s done overly amazing is baffling to me.

It won’t even be a blip on peoples radars by the end of the year .

S2Killinit30d ago

I really doubt that. I see it getting more and more traction.

ChunkyMonk30d ago

You must me typically wrong cuz those Steam chart numbers (AKA where the game sold the MOST) is less than what Hunt has, and Hunt didn't cost $500 million to make lol

Haki111230d ago

From the launch to now it went from 88k to 20k peak on steam that's like a 77% percent loss of players how is that gaining traction? Also if the people who are close to Bungie aren't lying PC users are the primary players.

terrorofdeath29d ago

by the end of the year? probably sooner than that

Soy30d ago

So........doing better than most expected, but not enough to make back what it cost.
