Marathon Review - Actions Have Consequences | Game Informer

Game Informer: "Like any good extraction shooter, Marathon is a game about the choice and consequences inherent within a run. Yet, it's more than just that. Bungie's excellent audio design and gunplay, paired with increasingly complicated level design borrowing from over a decade of expertise designing Destiny raids coalesce into something special. Marathon is proof Bungie is still at the top of its game."

I don't get the hate regarding this game. I'm not even a multiplayer guy but I think it's a masterpiece, it's incredibly polished and fun.

KwietStorm_BLM58d ago

We live in a time when people want games to fail. It's a weird obsession/culture some have. If a game isn't for you, fine. But when you start to manufacture things that aren't even in a game you haven't played, you need to breathe some fresh air.

Eonjay58d ago

Don't know how you got a downvote. Games are about having fun, not about checking on your own toxicity. It's weird. It's unhealthy, but i see this in all sorts of things across the web. Their is always a cult ready to hate anything regardless of what it is.

BlueDaBaDee58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Bungie has lost a lot of goodwill over the years due to very poor decisions, from plagiarism to removing paid content. A lot of that hate comes from Destiny players. Personally don't blame them either, Bungie hasn't exactly shown they learn from their mistakes. Would not put it past them repeating that history with Marathon, and nobody wants to feel like an invested sucker twice.

lodossrage58d ago

I'm not too sure about that.

Don't get me wrong, a good portion of that probably did come from people upset about Destiny. But from what I personally saw, it came from many online grifters from the "go woke go broke" crowd, spouting everything they could negative from the moment the game was announced.

AsunaYuukiTheFlash58d ago

It’s a good game but far from a masterpiece.

Obelisk9257d ago

I don't think extraction shooters or in general live service multiplayer games can get much better than this. Of course it needs fixes and support, but as a foundation I think it is as solid as it can get.

lodossrage58d ago

People hated the game BEFORE anyone even played it. This has been happening for a good number of games for a few years now.

People can't think for themselves and have to be told what to like/dislike. The hate campaign was alive and well for Marathon for over a year BEFORE the game came out.

Jeff Gertsman (co -founder of Giant Bomb now independent) has been raving about how much fun he is having playing Marathon. From other reviews I have watched on YouTube a lot of people are also saying it very intense to play Solo , including Jeff.

Dexterio58d ago

Nice. Not my type of games, but a good game is a good game 👍

Flenter58d ago

Having a blast . Its intense 😅

Bungie's PvPvE extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV in 2893. The gunplay inherits and refines Destiny's best-in-class shooting mechanics, heavy, precise, lethal. The extraction loop creates authentic pressure. The foundation is exceptional. The superstructure needs building.

“ Is it April fools day again?

The game is dead.

EDIT: the numbers are fudged. “digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data”

Does it hurt you to hear a SONY game was BEST selling ?
You gotta let go of those OBCURED feelings 🤷🏿

Neonridr31d ago

I mean the only reason MLB was the best selling title was because it was multi-platform. Likewise with Marathon. Will ring true for MS games. Only Nintendo titles are truly flexing their muscles when they chart as they are only to be found there.

S2Killinit31d ago

So that means we are going to act like it wasn’t best selling?

Neonridr30d ago

@S2Killinit - no it means that it was not entirely due to Sony.

VersusDMC30d ago

"Leading the way was MLB The Show 26. And while digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data, it still found its way to the number one spot despite only being on the market for two weeks at the time."

Don't let your nintendo bias get ahead of you and just lie...

It's kinda funny how this Obscure guy lives rent-free in your head. lol

Does Phil also live there?

Now kid run to mommy legs the grown ups are talking.
Don’t bother writing anything I will not respond to a bratty child like you

jambola31d ago

you know when you hit caps lock you can turn it off before finishing a word right?
it's not a commitment

1Victor30d ago

I was typing on my old iPad with near full memory and it was acting up 🤷🏿

Outside_ofthe_Box31d ago

Can't wait to see how this is spun negatively. 😜

-Foxtrot31d ago

Yeah sure, yet the player count is no where near what they want for a AAA game with so much money behind it

Why people are trying to spin this game like it’s done overly amazing is baffling to me.

It won’t even be a blip on peoples radars by the end of the year .

S2Killinit31d ago

I really doubt that. I see it getting more and more traction.

ChunkyMonk31d ago

You must me typically wrong cuz those Steam chart numbers (AKA where the game sold the MOST) is less than what Hunt has, and Hunt didn't cost $500 million to make lol

Haki111231d ago

From the launch to now it went from 88k to 20k peak on steam that's like a 77% percent loss of players how is that gaining traction? Also if the people who are close to Bungie aren't lying PC users are the primary players.

terrorofdeath30d ago

by the end of the year? probably sooner than that

Soy31d ago

So........doing better than most expected, but not enough to make back what it cost.
