I’ve got a 5090 in my PC. MS will need to give me a serious reason to buy their next console. It will potentially be the first Xbox console I don’t buy. If they go back to exclusivity then I’m in.

Eonjay75d ago

Technically, you will automatically have a next Gen Xbox simply by enabling the Xbox full screen experience app on you PC in April.

darthv7274d ago

Im curious to try that out as well... only my PC is an i7 7700k 32gb and RX580 8gb, so it likely wont be capable of more modern stuff but it certainly can play previous games. I'm still interested in console hardware so this new xbox has me intrigued.

peppeaccardo74d ago

a new XBOX with no innovation and no exclusives tied to its hardware capabilities is a no go for me .. .but most likelly for all of those who already have a powerfull gaming PC and a PS5/Switch 2 ... if so it is going to be DOA !!

Michiel198974d ago

i feel like this is gonna be the new narrative of the sad ps crowd on here, can't get along with anyone but themselves. First they got mad if people who play on pc ever said that anything was better than their plastic box parts and called them elitists/masterrace and now they're finally not bottom of the barrel hardwarewise themselves they've become the bully, classic.

While they ignore that xbox and ps5 and pc all have the same architecture, but whatever makes you sleep at night

DivineHand12575d ago

If you have an RTX 5090 PC, I am not sure why you would bother with console gaming.

If you are still gaming on consoles, then exclusive games are likely not the main reason because the last major PlayStation exclusive launched in October 2025. It would mean your PS5 was powered off this whole time.

You likely see value in console gaming because of the convenience of gaming on a couch in front of your TV. It is also more likely that friends you meet in the real world will have a console versus a gaming PC. If Microsoft can create a console that gives you access to your PC games from your couch, you may find that type of experience compelling.

I am making a lot of assumptions, but perhaps you can shed some light on this based on your perspective.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH74d ago

You’re definitely doing ALOT of assuming lol

ARESWARLORD74d ago

First of all it's crazy you would consider playing any console game from any manufacturer if you've spent the money to buy a 5090. If you're going to make the most ludicrous financial investment in gaming you might as well at least be exclusive to it

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH74d ago

Why would I only want a PC? I’m a console gamer who happened to start getting into PC a few years ago. I can afford my PC and all my consoles so why limit myself?

Agent7574d ago

A single format would be a dream, but will never happen fair enough. I respect PC gaming, but it's not for me due to the cost and I'm happy with consoles. With the Switch 2, it'd make more sense for Sony and Microsoft to release a hybrid console like the Switch 2. The tech is moving too fast and you have to consider the cost to the likes of us, the consumer. The high cost of a gaming PC and the PlayStation 5 Pro, how much are next gen consoles going to cost? I'm shivering in my boots if I'm honest.

DivineHand12574d ago (Edited 74d ago )

If you see yourself getting a next generation console, you can try setting money aside for it from now. This can be either for the new Playstation or Xbox PC console because it seems both may be releasing sometime in 2028.

Hopefully the ram supply issue will be cleared up by then.

Xbox is just a PC going forward.

[The Verge] “Microsoft says you should build next-gen Xbox games by building them for PC“

Eonjay75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

They are creating so much confusion which is never good for consumers. What it is is a pre-built PC. It will either stream old Xbox games or play the PC version via Xbox Anywhere. Xbox going forward is an app that runs on top of Windows 11. It is the Xbox Experience App. If you don't have a PC you can buy the prebuilt PC which will be running on the AMD SoC. If you do have a PC when the Xbox mode launches in Windows 11 in April... you have the next Gen Xbox. Congrats.

Montrealien75d ago

I see it differently, it’s actually way simpler now. If you have a PC, you know it runs Windows and you can just use that as an Xbox. And if you want a dedicated Xbox box that plays both PC and Xbox games, you get the Xbox box. It’s a specially branded hardware piece, but this Helix news is just announcing that every PC is now an Xbox in that same storefront ecosystem. Not many difficult choices there.

Michiel198974d ago

if it's not sony, it's xbox hahaha
remind me of some trilogies of movies that keep yapping about a dark and light side

Dude keep us out of your petty war, we're not interested. Also nothing changed, MS already released all of most of their games on pc, the literal only thing that will change is that the xbox dashboard or whatever they're gonna do with the app is gonna be available on pc. What's confusing?

Montrealien75d ago

It's just simpler now because if you have a PC, you know it most probably runs Windows and you will be able to use that as an Xbox. And if you want a dedicated Xbox box that has PC games and Xbox games, you just get the Xbox box. It’s a specially branded hardware piece, but this Helix news is basically announcing that every PC on the market can be an Xbox in that same storefront ecosystem

ocelot0775d ago

So.......a pc that can also play old gen Xbox games. No native Helix games just pure PC via Windows Store/Xbox app that will be optimized for helix and access to Steam, Uplay, EA Launcher, GOG, Epic Games. So like I predicted a a few days ago. A PC with a built in series x for BC or some form of emulation.

As a PC owner and a owner of a Series X. Absolute zero interest in this. However, I'm interested in Xbox Mode on PC they are releasing. I wonder if they will allow you to play your digital Xbox library of games on a normally PC at some point now that's what I'm interested.

Neonridr74d ago

see, they have you interested. You fit into one of the criteria. The hardware itself is really only going to appeal to either non-PC owners or users who might have a very dated machine.

I myself have a gaming PC, so I have no use for their hardware.

ocelot0774d ago

Im a very straightforward guy. If Microsoft release a good game I buy the good game. If they make a interesting piece of software than works with my current system Ill give it a try.

If they can allow me to not only play my old Xbox digital library on my PC but maybe start selling me some old classics like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Bruce Lee Quest of the dragon ill happily pay for them.

But as far as there PC goes. No interest at all I have a decent one and can easily upgrade it at any point. I can even ditch windows if I so choose to and install SteamOS. That is the true greatness of a PC....choice.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn228d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn227d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown28d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay28d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay28d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac27d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger28d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300028d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde28d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde27d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
