Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties review: How not to do a remake | VGC

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is a sad microcosm of the state of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio: a developer spinning its wheels, no longer caring for quality, content to chew up old assets and discard what made the original special in order to spit out a yearly release that cashes in on love for what the series used to be.

RGG has utterly fucked the Yakuza franchise by not just turning it into a turd-based game but also by changing the name of the series, by releasing unnecessary remakes of remakes, and even by employing a sexual predator, among many other egregious things. What a spectacular fall from grace.

RGG's mishandling of the Yakuza franchise and the damage it has caused to their reputation has been fucking delicious to watch. Keep it up! 👍

- Like a Dragon has always been the real, original name of the series in Japan.
- The turn-based games are good.
- They have not remade a remake.

The casting director should not have employed that guy. The rest of what you said is fluff but that is true.

"fucking delicious to watch" ... Alright, lad.

- Resident Evil's real, original name has always been Biohazard. Cool. Outside Japan, it's Resident Evil and Yakuza, respectively. Of course, if they're going to throw the classics away for that type of mediocre gameplay, I'm fine with them differentiating the classics from the turds by changing the name. Then there's the Kiwami situation... It's like the shit doesn't end with this series.

- Calling those two mediocre titles part of the mainline series is like calling Namco's Pokken Tournament a mainline title. With the difference being that Pokken Tournament maintains the spirit of the franchise, and it's a decent game, something those two are not. Still, I would love for Nintendo to turn Mario Kart into a card-based game going forward. The reception should be fun.

- Calling the new Kiwami remakes is me just being nice to them, because the reality is that these are just the George Lucas bastardized versions of the original remakes. Which makes them worse.

Besides some graphical elements being redone or retouched for the Dragon Engine, they actually have added and removed content, remade characters, and retconned parts of the story or events, and even characters, which has led to the abomination that is Kiwami 3, and now it seems that the Kiwami series is about to split from the original story going forward.

Why? Who the fuck knows? But it's obvious these fuckers have no idea what to do with this series anymore.

So while these are just unnecessary cash grabs that make a fool of the series' origins and the fans, they are, in essence, just cheap and lazy remakes.

As for me enjoying RGG's fucking delicious downfall, that's an understatement, bud. Seeing the new fans squirm has been glorious. But I do hope they take their own advice and shut the fuck up; it would just be hypocritical of them to do otherwise.

And here's the interesting tidbit. Just like millions of people enjoyed the series turning into a turd-based game, I'm fairly positive that millions out there are either happy or do not care that a sexual predator has been added to the franchise. In fact, they might even prefer it and enjoy the games even more.

Turn based games arent the issue. The reviews on those are stellar and are fantastic games and that's how the series will carry going forward rightly so and is thriving because of it. It's ones like these that are mishandled.

SimpleSlave109d ago

The fact that they are turd-based is the issue, bud. That's not the Yakuza series, but some other IP taking the name.

Regardless, there's one silver lining in all of this. By them removing the Yakuza name and going by the Like a Turd name instead, it makes it easier to ignore from now on. So it is what it is.

On a side note, I can only imagine the absolute shit show if Nintendo turned Mario Kart into a card game going forward. Oh, the hate, pushback, and Reddit posts would be legendary.

Anyways, that's neither here nor there. I'm just glad RGG is fucking the entire series up. Hopefully the Like a Turd fans won't have to wait long before their new mediocre IP gets Kiwamied as well. Can't wait.

andy85109d ago

Completely different. Mario Kart is a racing game not a card game. Like a Dragon is a RPG and it's still one. They arent fucking it up at all. The mainline titles are doing outstandingly well. IW is the highest rated game in the series and Like a Dragon is the highest selling game i. The series. So it seems like people want 'turn' based. Especially since the most awarded game in history just now is also a 'turn' based game. It's these remakes of older games people don't want.

LAD and Infinite Wealth are the best Yaluza games then followed by Yakuza 0.

SimpleSlave109d ago

Besides not being real Yakuza games and being absolutely mediocre in their own right, they are, in fact, not the best "Yakuza" games. Not even close. Not even a little bit.

Then again, I remember people claiming Hitman: Absolution was not just a good game but the best in the series, so it would track that there are people out there with terrible takes and even worse taste. So it is what it is. To each their own, or whatever.

But, hey, at least this new crappy IP co-opted the Like a Turd name instead of the Yakuza name, so that's at least a silver lining. Of course, now we have to deal with the whole Kiwami dumpster fire situation…

Sigh.

andy85109d ago

Oh but they are. Highest rated in the series for a reason. You haven't played them so it's not a valid opinion.

MDTunkown109d ago

Just for the record, I checked how VGC scored infinity wealth a like a dragon that is turn based.
They gave it a 5/5 score so your rhetoric doesn’t make any sense. They even scored that pirate game 3/5 so they seems not to like the yakuza 3 remake

CrimsonWing69109d ago

What damage? Haven’t they been selling well? I love Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth. The turn-based combat is excellent. So, what is it you’re on about?

Redgrave109d ago

Why are you trying so hard lol, out here acting like Yakuza going turn based and adopting Like A Dragon was the catalyst to having your water supply poisoned, crops burned and having also contracted a plague.

Why are only the low reviews being posted?

Metacritic 75

Engagement to bring the trolls out. 75 is a decent score and likely most of the reviews played it before the day one update which fixed a lot

shinXseijuro109d ago

I’d like for them to go back to a simpler storyline with new characters and lore . I’m kinda burnt by the OG cast . TBH when they took that concept and made Judgement I really had lots of fun with that game .
