Its begins, pc gaming just got exponentially more expensive than it already is and consoles are about to join the club.

Just waiting for game developers to tell us that somehow this has also raised the cost for them and they need to raise the prices of games aswell.

Thanks AI.

ZycoFox148d ago

Except if you had done any research into the matter you would know that the blame doesn't rest solely on AI data centres.

RAM manufacturers simply refuse to increase production to meet demand of everyone, including the public..

People with ancient hardware had lots of opportunities to upgrade when DDR4 was dirt cheap, DDR5 had been reasonable for a while. Now even SSDs are like double the cost what they were only some months ago.

People are upgrading to older Zen 3 chips on a platform with no upgrade path now too just because DDR4 is cheaper than DDR5 but it's all risen anyway. RAM can have cheap cycles and expensive cycles, but that's what happens when people wait forever to upgrade, if you upgrade every 3-4 years you get a nice boost and avoid this issue since you can wait it out with good hardware.

DivineHand125148d ago

What is happening now is unprecedented in the tech industry so you can't blame people who choose to upgrade every 5 or more years. AI and data centers deserve most of the blame and the rest would fall on the speculation pricing posted by retailers at the start of this mess.

The ram manufacturers have also been collectively manipulating the supply for years so the price of ram doesn't fall below a point they are comfortable with. Gone are the days ram prices were dirt cheap. This is why DDR5 and DDR4 ram never got to the low pricing we saw with DDR3. Right now they are enjoying their golden age of high returns for the same input. Which is bad for the rest of us.

CornholioX148d ago

every 3-4 years? kinda exaggerated. I did upgraded my pc in december 2024 and my previous pc was 9,5 years old except my GPU.

badz149147d ago

nobody is certain about the AI scene for now and I think the RAM manufacturers are pretty much like everyone else in thinking that it's a bubble waiting to burst anytime...just the matter of when. but in the mean time, they don't mind raking in as much as they can while the margin is this high as they have nothing to worry about because there's literally no one capable of taking their place in the industry, at least not for several more years - such as how far ahead they are and their dominance.

Eonjay147d ago

AI IS the reason for the increase... not people 'ancient systems'. It is so odd that you can't identify that the reason all this is happening is because one company bought half the world's supply. And every other company in AI needs the Memory to power their data centers. That is the issue. Blaming consumers is really distasteful and it comes off as willful ignorance. You sound like the type of person who blames devs for being laid off and replaced with AI.

Don't thanks ai. This all just propaganda and they have a agenda. You may think asus is a company but really elite owns it. We all know that

ZycoFox148d ago

Collusion has happened before between companies in the RAM space, ups & downs in prices. All the clueless just want to blame AI, so many angry people it's actually funny, instead of doing their own research they just instantly go "AI taking all the RAM, AI bad" when manufacturers have literally put a statement out saying they refuse to increase production in case "the AI bubble pops" and there is a massive oversupply.

Even if it does pop, the economy of the US at least will be in big trouble so computer components would be the least of their worries at that point, and AI won't stop advancing just because a bubble pops, that's another thing the clueless buy into. Probably looking at clickbait articles and YT videos and not thinking for themselves but what else is new.

Yi-Long148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

Seems pretty clear they want to create artifical scarcity and thus higher prices in order to make hardware unaffordable to casuals, in an attempt to push everyone towards cloud-service, as in, subscriptions. Ka-ching.

Vits146d ago

I think that’s just an extra benefit for the companies that are pushing cloud gaming. The simple reality is that there is a limited supply of memory, and it’s all being consumed by data centers.

Levii_92148d ago

Can gaming just die already and turn to ash? i just want everything to collapse and burn and then maybe just maybe.. from the ashes a new phoenix will rise. If not i don't care anymore

Eonjay147d ago

Gaming doesn't have to die but gamers have to actually stand up and stop supporting the crazy prices. Stop supporting Nvidia. Don't buy their cards. Don't buy the consoles/GPUs/memory at the inflated prices. AI speculation will only take this bubble so far. When it pops leave them standing there.

anast148d ago

PC gaming...where people spend 2k to rent games.

Snookies12148d ago

I mean, you can get game installers and save them to backup hard drives to save indefinitely. You can also dump ROMs from your own collection of console games and keep those forever too. Which can last even longer than physical discs or cartridges if you ensure you're keeping backups saved.

ZycoFox148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

I still blame Steam for killing off physical games, just my opinion.

I'm selling most of mine since they're basically pointless owning now, and many of them aren't worth that much anyway. And I mean PC only.

The older ones that are Steam activated might as well just be thrown in the bin... Almost, unless you have a slow/limited net connection and really need it for a reinstall.

The day when price go down because outdated, here we have everything go up regardless of the outdated device, yes this device is not outdated. However don't be fooled

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio32d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit32d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
