Thanks Microsoft....intergrating PC's, future handhelds, cell phones, and 360's. xbox 360 wireless accessories also being used on window's vista games. This is great. Direct X 10 improving the way games are made. I guess thats why Microsoft are multi multi multi billionaires....What a Master Stroke.

Windows gaming, often neglected in the face of new console launches, seems to be getting some more attention from Microsoft with new Vista-specific features and the announcement of Xbox Live integration. What other improvements and technology from the Xbox side is going to move over to the PC? Can we expect more ports of Xbox games, and will they always lag so far behind (as Halo, KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc. have)? What do you see as the future of PC gaming?

I can't speak to any o...

This is a link to an unbiased, very informative explanation of the Xbox 360 and PS3 architectures.

Then he supplies a link to a PS3forum with raging fanboys Ranting and making things up. WOW....how low you stooped this time DJ.

I have read that ATI has said that the 360 as of now don't do direct x 10 but can and will via a downloadable patch. So we will see. But in that link you provided they are saying what they heard but they aren't quoting anyone from ATI. But really its common sense. ATI and Microsoft made the 360 with Windows Vista in mind via live anywhere. And Direct X itself is a patch for computers. And the 360 has all the componants needed to run direct x 10 optimally. Unified shaders, ect. So we w...

I don't think the ps3 will suck either. I have never said that. I think developers at some point will make good games for it. But you are right. We will see when "We" can all play it and judge for ourselves. Its always about the games. And both systems are next gen in their own right. I read A lot. Everything I know is from my research.

Dvd9 isn't holding a cutting edge PC back. So it won't be holding the 360 back either. Make sense to you yet? lol...lol....its really just common sense.

Is like Kryptonite to Super Man. Get over it. It doesn't mean the ps3 will suck. It will eventually have good games. Its just not as powerful for games....key word...."for games" as the xbox 360 is.

The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.

The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times.

The Xbox 360 processor was designed to give game developers the power that they actually need, in an easy to use form. The Cell processor has impressive streaming floating-point power that is of limited use for games.

The majority of game code is a mixture of integer, floating-point, and vector math, with lots of branches and random memory accesses. This code is best handled by a general purpose CPU with a cache, branch predictor, and vector unit.

The Cell's seve...

And the 360 is direct x 10 ready. open GL is old and played. Direct x keeps updating and getting better and better. All the 360 would need is a software update and "walla"...Direct x 10 enabled. Thats the beauty of having the most powerful software company and most powerful video card maker joining forces to make the best console. Thanks Microsoft.

From everything I have read, I totally disagree with "YOUR" opinion. But soon enough we will do real world comparissons...lol...lol...Whe n the games are out on both platforms...No more excuses. Put up or shut up, I say.

The ps3 had to have hard drives as a standard due to how slow the blu ray drive is. 2 speed. lol...lol.... So the ps3's hard drive will cache just like the 360's hard drive will cache. to speed up load times. But it won't change the fact that data streaming from the ps3's blu ray drive will be much slower. But its nothing sony fans ain't used to anway. They have always had sloooooow load times. Sony fans will adapt. But 2 speed? lol....And don't give that balony about 2 speed being f...

When the Xbox 360 GPU features were unveiled, Nvidia expressed doubts about unified shader architecture, particularly about its performance. Do you think Nvidia’s comments are due to no Nvidia part, not even the RSX, having a unified shader architecture yet?

Bob Feldstein: Oh yes. Very much so.

In Windows Vista, WGF 2.0 will treat GPUs as having unified vertex and pixel pipelines, even if that’s not the case in the actual hardware. This suggests that eventually, al...

The interface to the system’s memory is 128-bit. Isn’t this a bottleneck considering the bandwidth-intensive tasks performed in the GPU? Why was a 128-bit bus selected when PC parts already implement 256-bit buses in their high-end editions?

Bob Feldstein: Excellent question because it gets to the heart of what is right in the system design. We have a great deal of internal memory in the daughter die referred to above. We actually use this memory as our back buffer. In additio...

Microsoft and ATI did the GPU architectural design, with MS determining the overall performance targets and ATI turning those targets into reality. The Unified Shaders and Intelligent Memory, for example, are direct results of our remarkable collaboration.

The PlayStation 3's higher graphics clock speed (550MHz versus the 360's 500MHz) does not mean the Sony console will outperform the Xbox 360. Its actually ATI's unified pipeline will make the biggest difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3. ATI archrival Nvidia, which is providing the RSX graphics processor for the PS3, has chosen not to go the route of a unified pipeline. With Direct x 10 on the horizen and windows Vista coming soon, Nvidia will eventually add that feature to their new car...

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? 5 times the amount the ps3 has in fact. Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and c...

Sony's CPU is ideal for an environment where 12.5% of the work is general-purpose computing and 87.5% of the work is DSP calculations. That sort of mix makes sense for video playback or networked waveform analysis, but not for games. In fact, when analyzing real games one finds almost the opposite distribution of general purpose computing and DSP calculation requirements. A relatively small percentage of instructions are actually floating point. Of those instructions which are floating-point,...

The memory architecture of the SPEs, specifically their lack of automatic cache coherency in favor of DMA transactions, seems like a lot of overhead is needed to feed work units to the SPEs and copy the results back to system memory.

you'll never see a PS3 title with more than 256MB of textures at any given time, due to the split graphics and system memory banks.

What do you think of the PS3's Cell architecture? How much harder is it for developers to write asymmetric multiprocessing code that will run on the PPE and the SPE's? How difficult will it be to port code that is tuned for the Cell over to the 360 while maintaining good performance? Do you think Sony made the architecture complex deliberately to make porting that way harder, or were they just trying to get maximum performance out of their system?

I don't think the Cell is as w...
