Always online wouldnt work for an action/RPG game like Diablo 3. This is not WOW. Death is very punishing, esp. if u are playing hardcore.
Think about it: you made a lvl 80 hardcore character by putting your months on it and saving his life in impossible moments.
And one day your "stable" connection goes off for just 5 seconds and your character gets killed by one weakling. How cool would that be?
I am afraid you are heavily CPU-limited with that setup. It isnt wise to couple a 6970 with a tri-core AMD. Look here:

I am talking for BF3. I recently upgraded to an i5 2500k @4 Ghz myself but I am also doing modelling/rendering on my machine. I have been using a Q6600 @3.2 ghz for 3 years and guess how my FPS in games changed: VERY LITTLE.
That CPU is overkill for gaming except for one or two PC-exclusives like Arma 2. I'd say wait for next generation of consoles to upgrade from a quad core.
These machines are all waste of money!
You dont need a 1000$ computer for BF3. An old 3 Ghz quadcore with 4 Gb Ram and an OCed GTX 460/6850 would be enough to play the game with all eyecandy.
You should be fine with that setup. DON LISTEN TO THE PC ELITISTS IN THIS WEBSITE!. A 3 Ghz quadcore and an HD 6850 can run BF3 on HIGH settings if not MAX, of which you couldnt tell the difference.
(This comes from a 4 Ghz i5 2500k + 460 SLI owner)
WOW! Even the thought that you can be playing as a grunt on the ground while another flies cluelessly in that F 35 is mind-boggling. Finally a good reason for upgrading my PC!
If it was possible in todays technology I am sure devs would use it. This system may have problems with shadows, animation and lighting, making it impossible to use in games.
I have Nvidia 3D Vision system it is cool, but not worth the money yet. I also like the trying the newest tech that is why I am a PC gamer.
In my opinion, the prolonged console cycle has a very big negative effect on games:
Developers try VERY HARD (sometimes half the development time of a game) to optimize the graphics and gameplay for consoles. It is actually not hard to create great looking and playing 3D content on PC. What is hard is to make it run on 6-year old...
