I played MGS series for gameplay. I'll be the first to admit that the story wasn't shallow; it was way too f*cking deep. The whole "companion" idea is a bit novel, but they lose value if they stay with you the whole game. If you had them only for select missions and/or ran into them randomly, it'd be easier to appreciate them. And it doesn't have to be a dog.
