Even if they didn't cover Walmart (or Amazon), is there any reason to believe that the ratio of sales between PS3, 360, & Wii would be different at those stores?
If anything, 360 sales could possibly be under-reported because Walmart is a discount retailer, and a lower priced console may sell more at Walmart than at other retailers.

As usual, when it comes to anything positive about a 360 exclusive, we hear comments (from the usual suspects) like "don't take his word for it" and "wait until the reviews come out". Yet, when it comes to exclusives for competing consoles, we hear, over and over, comments like "game of the year" and "best game EVER made", MONTHS before the game is released or reviewed.
As for me, EVERYTHING I've seen and heard so far about Alan Wake lea...
MS has struggled mightily in Japan, but I think they have sold around 1.5 million 360's so far. If so, that's around 3X as many as the original Xbox.
Fortunately, MS doesn't need Japan to survive, while Nintendo & Sony do.

You obviously weren't around during the Genesis vs. SNES days, or the early PS1 vs. Saturn days.
Fanboyism back then was just as bad as it is now, and MS wasn't in the console business back then. Heck, people in the early 1980's were having Atari vs. Intellivision arguements.

Dreamcast was the first home console whose games looked better than arcade games - this was a HUGE leap. Look at Soul Calibur - which was a DC launch game. It put the arcade version to shame.
Up until DC, The best looking games were still in the arcades - although the quality gap was narrowing. Saturn's arcade ports weren't as high resolution, and neither were PS1's.
Arcades were still somewhat popular in the 1990's because home consoles hadn't yet equaled arc...
I also remember PS3 fans screaming "GTA4 sucks", "We don't care about DLC", "Nobody plays GTA4 anymore anyways".
I'll never forget the way PS3 fanatics reacted when the DLC was announced as a 360 exclusive. They were bad-mouthing these games EVERY chance they got. Now, you guys are ecstatic that the games are available on PS3.

I seem to recall comments made about the lenght of another recent high-profile exclusive. The concensus by fans of that game seemed to be along the lines of:
"A true fan won't just rush to the end, they will take their time in order to experience everything".
I'm sure the same will apply here as well.
Sony should have made a "no buttons" advertisement comparing the PSP with the iphone. That is a FAR more relevant battle.
PSP will always have the edge over a jack-of-all-trades "smart phone" when it comes to gaming. Sony just needs to promote it better.

PS3, being a year newer technology than Xbox 360, is capable of slightly better graphics. There is no question about that. However, the difference between the best graphics on the 360 and the best graphics on PS3 is a LOT smaller than many PS3 fans make it out to be.
