The moment Sony allows cross play across the board, you'll see a gorilla type advertising campaign from Microsoft in which the world has never seen before. I'm assuming they're trying to get rid of stock because a new SKU is being announced at E3. There's no way they drop the price that fast. I would be pissed if I bought one. This would be similar to the 3DS situation in which they dropped the price fast to compete with the vita and gave everyone who bought one a bunch of free games....
But that's the thing... You don't just snap your fingers and make an excellent game. You don't just chuck a bunch of money at a new studio and say "make me a AAAA with all the servings"... It takes time and leadership to make a great game. Microsoft have been filthy rich for the entire existence of the Xbox brand and they barely have anything to show for it besides "services".

Smash is one of the most overrated franchise ever! That game peaked on the Gamecube... It's only fun when you're playing with friends, but gets boring and repetitive quickly (Imo)... It's too late for Microsoft and they've known it for a while now. The only thing that keeps them going is knowing they have a dedicated fanbase who are still unaware that it's over. That's their mission now, serving the blind and keeping them that way till the next generation.
To be honest it would be smarter for them to hold back one more year and deliver a bigger conference in 2019 in preparation for the Xbox 2.
