Wait what...? Is someone really questioning if it's better than last generation? The Xbox One is 2-3 times more powerful than a 360 and the PS4 is 4-5 times more powerful than a PS3.
You know for all the things you've listed, none if it really matters if it doesn't have the 1st party games that Sony offers. The same actually goes for the Xbox One. And even the Wii U. And heck, even the PS3 and 360.
The games content is a defining factor for people buying a console.

Yup, trying to find a PS4 is hard enough already after launch. Trying to find one on Black Friday just wasn't going to happen.
Yeah they are just behind in a lot of aspects. I mean heck, people can go out and buy a PS3 or 360 for a mere $200 or less with a huge backlog of games.

Like you said, the Vita is its own console and you don't need the PS4 to play it. It's more of a supplement feature, not the primary feature.
As for the Wii U, it's a primary feature.
And for the Shield, well the cost of entry on that one will depend on if you already have an Nvidia GPU or not.
Just came home from best buy after picking up my wife a gift. No PS4s or X1s in sight. But wow there were stacks of Wii Us left. Probably over a hundred. :( I was tempted to get one.

Xbox Ones were In Stock everywhere here at Target, but after Friday they are all out of stock. However, the PS4 was still out of stock or sold out even before Black Friday. It's going to be really hard to find a PS4.
They shipped 300,000 units to the UK alone, it's entire plausible that they might have sold all of them. We won't know until some sort of press release comes out.
