Nintendo has a similar forecast for the wii/wiiu. I think it is around 10 million, with the wiiu being about half of that.
And just like here with the Vita, I don't really see that happening. These forecasts seem a little... off.
But what do I know, not working at either company and not knowing their internal plans... e3 can't come soon enough(and then, tgs....^_^;)

This past week was golden week in japan, one of the nations biggest consumer shopping seasons. The 3ds hasn't had a release in 2 weeks, going from around 100,000(and potentially higher) in hardware sales to 75,000 and then, golden week, 95,000.
During the same period, the Vita sold near 8,000(after constant drops.), bumped up to 12,000(Ciel no Surge was released) and then, golden week, 10,000.(Which could be seen as a rise, if you consider the normal drop ...
I don't know. The 3ds is doing great in both sectors.
Furthermore, Nintendo has promised that we will see more efforts from western 3rd parties starting with e3. (I personally speculate a 3ds CoD with slide pad pro bundle to be a big e3 3ds western game announcement.)

The GC was the most powerful, and I'm pretty sure the snes and 64 were as well.
Realistically, Sony is at a far better risk of going software only, and they aren't even a game company,
Nintendo would have to see nearly a century of losses before being at risk, while Sony have lost nearly 90% of their former companys worth in the last decade.
I think so, but we won't know until at least e3.
Some of the most recent Rumors are saying it(wiiu) will be 2x as powerful as the 360.
While statements from sony along with recent rumors put the ps4 weaker than the wiiu.
They(Nintendo) will also be pushing the 3ds heavily. This has already been confirmed.
Of course you feel this way. Without any solid info to go on, it is hard to be excited.
But an actual opinion can't be formed until we actually have concrete info.
Except we DON'T know if the nextbox and ps4 will run circles around the wiiu. In fact, most signs are telling us that the ps4 will be the weakest next gen console, if rumored leaks and Sony's own statements are to be believed.
So?

If this is a 2014 game, ps3 may not make much sense.

Nintendo will also be selling dlwd codes to retailers as if they are physical copies, and retailers can sell these codes for as much as they want.
But, as they will cost less to ship, stock and produce, they will also cost less to wholesale, allowing retailers to sell them for less than physical retail while still making a profit.
Further wiggle room created by not having to worry about the costs of backstock will also allow for sales and competitive pricing between retailers,...
