Starcraft is an important game, of course. So is GT and Goldeneye. The problem is that they chose to do a list, so they'll always be leaving some essential game behind. I mentioned Shenmue because it is probably the most important and daring game of our times and no one gives it credit. It is always Zelda and Zelda, and the usual suspects. I'm getting tired of that! Not just because I like the game, but as a videogame historian, because the game was years - still don't know how many - ahead o...
Spielberg once told this great story about him and Kubrick. As they sat for a relaxed conversation, Kubrick asked Spielberg what his favourite ten actores were. He pointed them out to him.
Kubrick answered him by asking "where is James Cagney on that list?"
My question to the author of this article is "where is Shenmue on this list?"
The movie implies that, not Jack Thompson. If you watch the GameTrailers interview where he is asked what games do you know, he mentions GTA and he can't really mention any other game title. I mean, he is trying to crucify videogames but he can't even mention a game title...? He doesn't know what he is talking about at all. I thought he was better than that.
Gamers hate Jack. I understand why. I tried to understand the man a little more, think if I wasn't wrong about him. I agr...
GTA was an important game, but I remember Driver came before it and GTA was heavily influenced by it. GTA happened to be the most popular version of several attempts of creating a game where you could drive and walk, freely, through a city space. So it couldn't really be present here I'm afraid to tell you.
Great initiative; to be honest I haven't seen something this wise in a website for such a long time now.
Street Fighter II is missing, of course, and I also agree, totally, with Pac-Man... those had to be placed in there somehow. What about Tennis for Two, Spacewar! or the Magnavox Odyssey's Ping-Pong game? This last one gave the idea for PONG, and PONG gave the idea for Breakout, and Breakout was the main inspiration for Tomohiro Nishikado's Space Invaders. Ah... so many game...
Sure it is a golden age for retailers and newbies. But it's the dark ages for old-time players and people who've actually grown up playing and become mentally adult. The industry hasn't been able to provide substantial games to those who now look for more than just a thrill. Shooting has become a repetitive action included in most videogames. Where is the intricacy and true artistic nature in games? Am I the only one concerned with these pertinent questions?
This industry was g...
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus had to be great games. For what other reason would a bright and talented person like Alex Rowe spend much of his day thinking about these games and new ways to express his admiration/gratitude for the wonderful experience they've provided?
These aren't "just" games. This is the stuff of dreams. And much like all the great things in life and art, they're not within every mind's grasp - pardon my honesty.
So, in your opinion, what is a good game, advanced for its time?
Yes, the first game did show some potential. But I think this game is going to end up being one of the biggest disappointments in recent history, mainly due to the hype and antecipation it is creating already. Any minor fault will be the end of it, given the current state of game reviews. It has to be REALLY good in order to prove that the PS3 is, afterall, the console everyone expected it to be.
Uncharted has already begun the process of showing how much can be done, graphical...
In an article such as this, the 1UP writer should only have selected the games, not express his personal opinions on them. I mean... since when is SONIC 3 not worthy? I dislike this critical approach to everything, even in such an innocent article such as "Wii Virtual Console - 1 year old". Give me a break!
Anyway it is a great occasion and the Virtual Console is a great service which, by the way, should be a little cheaper, doesn't everyone think so? Nintendo is so c...
PC Vs Consoles. The oldest issue in the book.
First of all, the PC isn't a gaming system. It is a system which runs multiple software, including games. For that reason it shouldn't be thrown into a competition with something as specific as a console - though the modern consoles also extend to other forms of entertainment.
Secondly, the PC is an abstract system. When you mention the PC you could be mentioning your state-of-the-art, "I bought it last week and ...
When you want a game to be GTA Style free roam you got to bear with the consequences. Bugs, general errors, slowdowns, pop-in, clipping, and some funny istuff such as this. The question is... is the game good enough to be forgiven for its blunders? You decide.
I've seen worse bugs on GTA and I don't remember anyone saying we shouldn't play GTA because of them.
Sure, this is a UBISOFT game, it can't get much better than what it is. This is western-made... japanese games have significantly less bugs because they (still) run the business.
The game is fine and it is worth playing. If a bug appears, reset the console and give it another try, why not? They had to meet a deadline and so they rushed the release. Of course, tru...
Weapons? I wonder if you'd be doing a top ten on weapons if your sister had been killed with one. Oh man, what a bunch of stupid, brainwashed bunch of people these guys are. You think guns are great? You look like those ignorant kids in Iran, who smile when they're given their first gun.
Is this stupid tendency ever going to end?
We should only care about the game and the designers, not the PRs and the faces selling it. The artists and their work.
This is the sort of controversy one would find in a sensacionalist newspaper or magazine. Are you videogame players or are you old women discussing soap operas the latest scandal concerning some country's royalty? Grow up people... play whatever game you like and shut yer traps. As if the videogame society wasn't stained enough because of the silly discussions...
The guy or girl who owned this console must have buried it. It doesn't look like dust as much as it looks like thin dirt. Maybe the poor bastard dug a hole in the backyard, predicting an early death of the PS3.
I wouldn't even touch that console as it is, let alone repair it. If there is something wrong with the console, there is damaged caused and the warranty doesn't cover it I think.
But this whole question is becoming quite popular isn't it? I mean... the on...
How did they managed to get this info?
All they did at IGN was to supress the redundancy of the paragraph they'd written. I mean, the text is much better that way. People became so gullible they're depending on what the websites write as some sort of sacred truth. Even if they're the same, you'll be seeing frame rate issues where they don't exist just because someone suggested them. It's a brainwash if you ask me.
Are we talking about motors and reprises? Why don...
What a marvelous universe SEGA created for this game. Also the trailer has a great new orchestration of the original Nights theme. How I wish this game could be running in a brand-new SEGA console, a promise of new horizons away from the Sony VS Microsoft VS Nintendo disputes. How I wish this all would end so we could focus more on the games and less on the controversy. How I wish SEGA was truly alive.
Wii is a great console, and it would be really cheap to produce a Shenmue for it because it could almost use the same graphics engine used in the DC and XBOX version and still it would look great on the Wii.
But of course, Shenmue, as a game, is the true example that both technical and artistical excelency can only be provided with new and improved hardware, much like the powerful Dreamcast provided at the time, compared to N64 or Playstation. Shenmue wasn't just great because ...
This is the sort of list which is made by people who know as much about Videogame music and Music as I do about harvesting cotton.
The examples shown are dull, classic and predictable, and they mirror a very restrict knowledge of games as well, as they either belong to very recent games - Bioshock, Portal, etc - games from a couple of years ago or the classics everyone knows like Kid Icarus, Mario and Zelda.
