The whole point of the intellectual Property laws are to allow people to profit of their own creativity and ideas without it getting stolen.
For example, you are not allowed to make copies of a game and sell it. Because you are deliberately trying to make a profit out of someone's idea.
When you buy a product however you can do whatever you want with it legally. That includes selling off the product to someone else....

And you claim to be a huge Metal Gear fan. Solid and Liquid's DNA was about 80% identical to Big Boss's. Siblings only have 50% identical DNA therefore Solid and Liquid are closer to Big Boss than siblings are to each other.
FYI, the japanese voice actors of Solid Snake, Big Boss and Solidus Snake are the same. In MGS2, Solidus had a different english voice acto...

It was a significant milestone to overcome.
Right now, next-gen graphics will be taking a turning point. For a serious game like MGS, to compete with other titles in graphics, Kojima Productions have to make a choice of keeping regarding their art style.
Photorealism was the best choice. Since MGS is very much a cinematic game inspired by many hollywood films, it was the best choice.
There's nothing wrong with buying used games in the first place.
So if he wants to do it as a form of protest, it's his choice.
