What I think the game really needs is something to help prevent the light/white UI elements from blending in to the background too easily.

Sony and MS are smart enough to avoid the consumer confusion like Wii/Wii U situation if games will only be playable on certain versions.
There's no point treating the next system as an iterative model. Like you said, you have the issue of base PS4 either holding back new system or not being able to run the new game at all. Then there's needless consumer confusion over what the difference is and what system will play what game. Make a clear break.
