“We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games,” Carmack said. “That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version.”
That there answers the question. All those companies that PCs made into big household names, made them what they are today, have turned their backs on the PC and develop for consoles. At some point they may throw the PC a bone by porting a game from t...
"Many players and industry professionals will reason that if even WoW can't make it, then no other MMO even has a chance."
I love that part, WoW ... make it!? It just celebrated it's 7th YEAR of "making it". If a game can last for 7 years (and still kicking strong), racking in millions upon millions PER MONTH from subscriptions alone, and not be classed as making it, then I fear for the gaming industry. If, and when, WoW hangs up it's gauntlets...
Yeah I loved Guild Wars, for a while, but it really concentrated on PvP (especially in the original title) which is something I'm not a fan of. On saying that Guild Wars 2 is shaping up to being a decent game with a solid campaign to run through, I'll probably buy it when it's released.
"just look at how more people play UT2k4 than UT3"
Part of that is down to UT3 being made for console and PC, with emphasis towards the console, which made UT3 a real crappy game.
"A recent survey found that more than half of existing World of Warcraft subscribers have grown tired of the game."
"The survey, conducted in conjunction with Peanut Labs, polled 381 online customers and found that 50 per cent plan to buy EA’s The Old Republic."
I find this so funny, they surveyed a mere 381 people out of over 10 MILLION! to draw their conclusion. That's as stupid as surveying 2 people who both say they are quitting Wo...
Who cares if they are not a big name band, that doesn't give a super rich company the right to muscle in on their copyrights because they think they can.
If it were a hugely successful, and well known, band there were be no issue as Ubisoft would quickly back off as they know they are in the wrong. Here we see a classic case of a rich company thinking they can steamroll over the little man even when they know they are in the wrong.
Well there appears to be a huge demand for these kinds of mod, so it's not surprising one was released so soon.
The decline in WoW subscribers was inevitable, it happens all the time once a given expansion has been out for long enough and people are itching for some totally new content and/or game changing alterations. The figures will pick back up a bit once MoP is released, then slowly decline months down the line.
Also, given that Blizz (in a sneaky manner) have introduced gold selling into WoW via the tradable pet you buy with real money from the Blizz store, it's no surprise t...
I like how they say they didn't switch to F2P due to low subscription numbers ... I can smell the BS all the way over here!! Of course they switched due to the low number of subscribers, if they were making tons of cash and numbers were increasing regularly then they'd be insane to switch to F2P
I'm also one of those people who saw they game and really wanted to play it, but yet another game demanding a subscription fee put me off. I knew from the start the game w...
Blizz hinted years ago that they have a few more expansion ideas lined up which would eventually take the level cap to 100 and beyond. Given that Cataclysm only raised the cap by 5, and the new expansion does the same, we can assume that there will be at least 2 more expansions.
The article seems well thought out and it's obvious a lot of time and effort was put into it. Sadly the entire thing became null and void when I read the following:-
"Is this the worst Final Fantasy on the original Playstation? I’d say no, I think they get progressively better, actually, with 7 being the worst of the lot."
No, just no.
@Logicwins
That is precisely the reason they keep quite about when a new console is going to be released. Sure they can allude to the fact that it's in development, but they sure as hell won't say when it's coming. As you said, if they did then current gen sales would die instantly as people would wait for the next generation to be released. Keeping quite they can maintain high sales right up until the next gen is ready to roll out the door.
Sadly I can see the price increase happening, people will moan and complain, but ultimately it'll happen and people will buy the games anyway. Don't kid yourself into believing it won't happen, look at this gen games, when they were announced to be $60 there was a mass outcry ... quickly followed by a mad dash to buy the latest iteration of one franchise or another as it was released. People will moan and complain, but they will still go out and buy into it ... you know it, I know...
Simple solution, publishers open their own game stores and/or buy out gamestop. But then again the simple solutions are often the ones they totally overlook ... like making a good game in the first place that isn't completed in 6 hours with no replay value.
I think this is Blizz' way of testing the waters. I have this feeling that should this work out well for D3 that this type of auction house could end up being implemented into WoW. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if it's already listed as a feature of the next expansion.
I know why there is a call for the next generation of consoles to be released, and I bet it's not just the developers crying out for it.
Think about it, if you believe the market analysis, the next gen of consoles is going to phase out physical media in favor of download only games. Think about that for just one second and then think about how over the past few months more and more developers and publishers and complaining about the used games market screwing them out of ...
@HammerAndSickle
The system I replaced this year was just over 6 years old. I could (and still can if I really wanted to) quite happily play any game on it, yeah some of the latest I couldn't put at max settings, but they would be playable and over 30fps. Yeah, at that time I bought the biggest and most bad ass components on the market, but I built it to last, and last it did.
So please don't go shouting as gospel that a 6 year old computer cannot pla...
The sad thing is it's hard to tell the effects of boycotting since every time a game under performs you never hear the publishers acknowledging boycotting as the factor involved, they just blame piracy instead.
We hear it constantly, this game or that game sold less copies than anticipated ... it was down to those stinking pirates again. We all know damn well piracy isn't to blame all the time, but we'll never hear it admitted, nor will it change anything.
The Unreal series was great, but after Unreal Tournament 2004 ... you know, when Epic slapped all PC gamers in the face and went to consoles ... the series took a nosedive. Unreal 3 (or as it was to be called, Unreal Tournament 2007) was the worst pile of ported-badly-from-console crap they've ever churned out. I've never forgiven Epic for that, so if they want to win me (and the rest of the disgruntled PC gamers) back they'd better do things right and develop the next Unreal game...
Single player games aren't going anywhere, it's just in todays connected world it seems if a game does not have a multi-player component then it gets slated and/or given a lower review score because of the omission. So devs put multi-player in every game possible (even those that don't need it and never asked for it) ... usually to the detriment of the single player component.
You just have to look at the industry comments to see the negative effect. These days th...
