IF they were to release another UT game it had better be more like the best UT game in the series (UT2k4) and not the piece of garbage UT3. I had so much fun and spent so much time playing UT2k4 (and being in a clan rated in the top 5 world wide) back in the day ... then they released UT2k7, or UT3 as they renamed it so as not to confuse the console kiddies. At this point the series took a nose dive and died. They compromised so much of the game to make it ok for consoles that it ended up rui...
I gotta agree, that is an expensive PC, but NOT a "very, very expensive PC" (my current, self-build, rig hits close to the $5000 mark). Maybe the title should replace very expensive with overpriced.
It is interesting how times change. Back in the day you were a social outcast if you even admitted an interest in video games or computers. You were ridiculed, laughed at and thought to be some kind of low life hermit who had no friends and never left moms basement. Now, the tables have turned and it's those who don't play video games who are thought to be the strange ones LOL
The sad thing about this article is it makes a couple of valid points, but they are buried under a ton of whining and bitching, so much so that even though the points are valid you still come out feeling the guy is a crybaby and the article holds no validity.
If you are going to make an article like this at least back up your points with solid reasoning and evidence, not the "I hate WoW, it ruined the world and all of gaming so I'm going to bitch about it" with ...
I have to agree with you. Points 1, 2 and 3 particularly stand out as stupid. Seriously how can you condemn a game that you play for 5 minutes and say it's boring. Yes WoW has a lot of the boring old repetitive quests, but there isn't an MMO now (or probably ever) that doesn't. Had the guy played for more than 5 minutes he'd have found things much better.
The "clone wars" one is laughable. Every FPS plays like ... bang, bang, dead guy, bang bang, ano...
To rectify a HUGE error of understanding Activision did NOT, nor will they ever, make World of Warcraft. Blizzard made World of Warcraft, period. Activision and Blizzard only merged a few years ago and even then Blizzard are the ones in control of World of Warcraft.
The article itself was, well, outdated and inaccurate at best. Firstly stating as fact that Activision created and released World of Warcraft when anyone with even a passing interest in games know it was Blizzard....
Yeah I hear a lot of QQing in this article.
But to enlighten the author, games of a genre are compared to games of the same genre. So, MMOs will be compared to WoW simply because, right now, WoW is the king of MMOs that ALL new MMOs aspire to become or dethrone.
I say this every time I read an article like this.
People are such hypocrites, they bitch and complain about having to wait for a game to be released and say dumb stuff like "Just release it now and patch it later". Then when the game is released and they find bugs or problems with it they bitch and complain and say the game shouldn't have been released.
You just can't please some people. I for one would rather wait and have a perfect (or near perfect) game than get a rushed release and have to download patc...
FFXIV won't go F2P, why? Because SE do not listen to people when it comes to their products.
I know first hand how badly they ignore people since I was in the beta testing (closed and open) for FFXIV and submitted bug and problem reports the size of small novels on a monthly basis. Yet upon release of the game every single bug and problem I had encountered were still there!! Made me wonder why they even bothered with a beta test phase since they didn't listen to anyon...
I believe the subscription games are (or will be) a thing of the past.
The biggest problem is market saturation. A handful of years back paying a monthly subscription fee was rare and the exception to the rule. So you were never torn between paying to play one game or another. Fast forward to today and virtually EVERY online game is demanding a monthly fee to play it. This has had a severe impact on the gaming scene as we see failure after failure to steal WoWs thunder, and t...
I think it's quite sad that a select few players have powered their way to the endgame and are now complaining that there are very few people there with them to play with. Just exactly what did they expect? Of course there are going to be very few people there since most people have other things to do with their time and/or are taking their time to thoroughly enjoy the game as it was meant to be enjoyed. Rushing a new MMO to get to the end will result in only one thing, disappointment. <...
LOL yeah I don't think anyone was ever under the illusion that Diablo III would be released then. The only rumors I've heard are for a Q1 release, March seems to be hinted ... but who knows how serious those rumors are.
"They have always been able to showcase their games well, with great quality and a good sense of marketing, but one area of the industry they haven’t been able to penetrate is the PC."
Umm, this is the problem, the author doesn't seem to realize that Ubisoft became the "prominent game publisher" it is today off the back of PC gaming. They made their millions on the PC and then jumped ship to the console and flipped PC gamers the bird on the way over. ...
Yeah I'm with you in this. I know some people who play Eve and they say it's not an easy game to get into initially. You're going to need to dedicate months and use tons of mods just to get used to who it operates ... all before actually doing something meaningful. To me this sounds too much like a chore that I'd only be able to manage in small doses.
If it went f2p I'd be less hesitant to play it, given that I know I'd not be loosing anything if I onl...
Aion has had a couple of free trial periods. Early on in it's life it had a free 7 day trial and only a few months ago it had another free 7 day trial. Both were offered on the Aion website.
I kind of agree with #3 SW:TOR will end up going f2p. I doubt it'd be in 3 months as the article says, but I wouldn't be surprised if a year from now it were f2p.
I've said this time and time again, if an MMO wants to take on WoW then stop taking it on on their terms in their playground, it will only fail.
The biggest hurdle/problem, subscription fees, who decided that $15 a month is the standard fee ... and who says that any MMO coming to the market MUST charge that same fee? Just take a look at every recent MMO that thought it could take on WoW, virtually all of them went with the $15 subscription model ... and, not surprisingly,...
There really is no quick solution to this problem.
You can't just create a "premium" service for people who want to get away from the problems, because, well, charging a premium isn't guaranteed to do that. There will always be some form of grief coming from people, and then it boils down to what you class as acceptable, playful, banter and what you class as hateful attacks. Plus, some would see it as a punishment, having to pay more just to enjoy a good gam...
The article and her responses are so flawed and show her true lack if understanding (or the fact she is ignoring PCs).
"User-generated content like level editors are still alien to most gamers"
Umm, level editors and user-generated content have been a part of PC gaming for at least a decade. Virtually EVERY PC gamer knows what they are and I'd speculate a huge chunk of them have tried their hand at creating content for one game or another.
