720p vs 720p upscaled to 1080p will look the same because they are essentially...THE SAME!
Neither Gears or Halo 3 are NATIVE 1080p so the 360 is just upscaling them to 1080p which makes almost no difference!
You can see a huge difference between NATIVE 720p and NATIVE 1080p.
NATIVE 1080p is far superior to UPSCALED 1080p
Far Cry 2 is NATIVE 720p
Xbox always lists all available resolutions INCLUDING UPSCALED on the box. I'm looking at Halo 3 right now and it lists 480i/480p/72p/1080i/1080p. Halo 3 is NATIVE 520p (or something similar) but the 360 UPSCALES it all the way to 1080p. It's like when you buy an up-converting DVD player. You put in standard DVDs that are NATIVE 480i and the DVD player UPSCALES it to 720p/1080i/p. I prefer native resolution over upscaled, as do most videophiles.

They gave MGS4 an 8/10 and there was an uproar! The reviewer spoke about his reasoning after the uproar and tries to justify it. This was in an interview and not in the actual review. It went something like this-

There's many time I read a review (or watch one on XPLAY) and think "what's this a 7/10?" and then they give it a 8.9. You can't ALWAYS tell from 'text' what the score is! Reviews just point out good and bad things and ...

I've beaten Halo 3's SP about 5 times and beaten the co-op about 2-3 times. I can 100% honesty say that R2 multiplayer and co-op graphics are FAR SUPERIOR to Halo 3's SP, Co-op and Multiplayer! R2 is native 720p and Halo 3 is like 520p!
Halo 3's final boss was a damn race track!
