Besides I imagine the number of people playing a PS3 on a 71 inch! plasma just slightly out-weigh the number of folks with a nuclear generator in their basement that feeds back into the grid.

Time=money. In business the key phrase is "git 'er done". Why devote such significant resources to a technology that I have already read is out of date.
If the PS3, through proper tapping of it's cells, allows programmers like Vivendi to emit a soothing ray that cures cataracts so be it-invest the time and money, but if we're talking something akin to GOW graphics,this is not a viable investment

It means that too many people are over-exaggerating the potential life expectancies of either of thse consoles. Do we expect tech improvements to slow down? By the end of 2008-2009, if not earlier, I imagine sales of present consoles will be dropping off in anticipation of the nex-gen machines arriving (if they haven't already).

For the same reason that I think that my hetrosexual acquaintance is a dork for going off non-stop on his sexual conquests. Sexuality should be a part of who you are, not the sum. When it dominates it leaves you shallow.
Furthermore, no one like to be force-fed, no one likes to be dictated too. We also get tired of hearing how difficult someone's plight is -no matter how justified. It's just human nature.
