I'm guessing it's a marketing strategy to have people, who buy the expansion, buy Battlefield 3, not the other way around since fans will probably buy the game brand new and get it for free anyways.

I'm reserving this, Homefront, and Yakuza. The next games coming out in the second half of this year that I might give a shit about are Madden and NCAA Football 12.
