5 Flaws that keep Fallout 4 from Perfection

First of all; Fallout 4 is by no means a bad game, or even a good game, it is excellent. But Fallout 4 unfortunately pales in comparison to the near perfect Skyrim and engrossing Fallout 3. So, this is not a hate post against Fallout 4 but flaws that can and will most likely be fixed by mods, but it is disappointing that Bethesda didn't fix/include them at launch. (Note: I haven't included glitches and bugs because Bethesda will have them fixed quickly. I hope.)

1: Not enough Vaults
Fallout 4 has a shallow five vaults! Fallout 3 and New Vegas had 6 vaults, on older hardware! I was thoroughly anticipating explore the vast slathers of vaults which I assumed would be present, I was greeted with the dampening news that there were five vaults. Even worse; a couple of the vaults have the same architecture, and Vault 111 is tiny; barely worth exploring. While this number is likely to increase with the expansion packs (I refuse to refer to them as DLC because of their value) it is very disappointing to see this slander number of vaults.

2: The main quest-lines are too streamlined
While I was left unsatisfied with Fallout 4's ending (Onto that later) I was left with an even sourer taste when I found that once you've completed the main campaign there are little to no larger quest-lines as we've grown accustomed to in Bethesda Game Studio's games. Think back to Skyrim's Dark Brotherhood, a great quest-line all in it's own with no direct relation to the main campaign. I feel like I am simply trudging around doing quests for no greater purpose after completing the main quest-line.

3: Disappointing Graphics
By no means does Fallout 4 look bad, in fact it looks quite good but Bethesda Game Studio's game were known; prior to this point, for their tech leading graphics. Look no further than Oblivion, interviews after the E3 conference state it is 'one of the best looking games I've ever seen'. Of course Oblivion has aged but back in 2006 it was a stunning game. While Skyrim wasn't as much of a leap, it was one of the best looking games toward the end of the seventh generation, mainly because of it's art style over texture quality. Fallout 4 has made no major leaps in technological fidelity or art style, which is extremely disappointing.

4: Disappointing Ending(s)
NO SPOILERS: If you're reading this then you've most likely completed Fallout 4, and you have been greeted with the same bland cut scene at the end. We were all expecting our choices to have ramifications in the ending cut-scene as we've been treated in past Fallout games, but unfortunately both the endings themselves and the cut-scene is EXTREMELY unsatisfying. There isn't much to expand on here as they can only be described as being 'mandatory' without spoiling too much.

5: Unfulfilled Settlement potential
Settlements got me hyped, simple as, and while the first hour or so of building them can be fun. They have no longevity, the endless trudging to defend or fix settlements you have no care for is boring, the construction itself is limited. Most importantly, while I can excuse the clunky UI included, it is damn near impossible to organise your settlers properly as they have no defining names or features. How hard would it be to give us a list of settlers and their jobs beside them?

So, more than anything, Fallout 4 fails to fulfill so much potential; while it is an excellent game, it could of been so much better...

I'm telling you man they seriously need a new engine, the creation engine is being pushed to far

Loadings, framerate and the worst offenders, DIALOGUES and crappy plot.

Agreed. While it's good in almost everything it does it's not exceptional in anything really (besides the art direction maybe). Bethesda could've done better on almost every aspect of the game. With that said I think the game as a whole is better than the sum of its parts and I'm really enjoying it still.

Yeah, its a great game no matter what

I agree, Fallout 4 is turning out to be a bit of a disappointment for me.

After waiting for the sequel for 4 to 5 years the progression and improvements that usually comes with a sequel wasn't significant or enough to warrant that amount of time. If the F4 came out a year or two after New Vegas I may have been a little bit more lenient.

The biggest, most obvious flaw is the settlement as you mentioned. I was shaking my head in disbelief at the design of the whole thing, especially the scrapping junk part. Why can't you scrap junk from inside your inventory? Instead you have to drop the item, go into your settlement mode, select each item on the ground, then press scrap. Fire the lead designer for such a tedious task.

Fallout 4 is a good game, but not the game I was expecting on the new consoles for this new gen.

You actually don't have to do that. If any junk items are placed in your workshop (like when you hit X button/key to transfer all junk) it's automatically scrapped when producing an item.

So if you have 200 newspapers, it will automatically scrap those 200 newspapers to produce cloth before actually consuming any cloth you already have.

The game never tells you, and I was doing what you were until I saw a Reddit post about it.

So funny thing is, right when I left this comment someone told me exactly what you did. Which is hilarious.

I think fallout 4 was meant to come out for 360/PS3. The graphics are the same as Fallout 3/Vegas.

guyman3737d ago

Are you being serious? Wow, what a lie.

BillytheBarbarian3736d ago

People don't agree because they're suckers that are easily amused.

It's the same graphics. Might have some better textures and small stuff but I'm not getting any different or better experience from Fallout 4 that I didn't already get from previous games.

This generation is the "been there, played that...now in more HD" generation.
