Survival Horror - Why do I do this to myself?

I must have been 11 when my mom went out and purchased the first PC we ever owned. I can't even remember the specifics of it, but one thing I do remember are the games we played on that thing. My mom was quite the fan of the horror, puzzle type games.

So as you probably have already guessed we had games like The 7th Guest and Phantasmagoria. Countless nights were spent sitting on one of the kitchen chairs behind my mom as she played these games, we would both jump, scream, even yell at the computer screen in hopes some how the fictional character would hear us and run away.

There is nothing creepier to me till this day than the image of the ghostly women who beckoned me down the hall as I entered the basement in The 7th Guest. For lack of a better way to say it, she scared the CRAP out of me, I couldn't even watch because she terrified me so much. Oddly enough though, I kept going down in to that basement, every time I replayed the game, no matter how much it scared me, I was going.

So of course here I am, 26 years old and one genre that is an undeniable favorite of mine when gaming is survival horror. Anything in general that can get a terrified rise out of me, I have to play it. Amnesia, Fatal Frame, Clock Tower, Resident Evil, Slender, Condemned, Sanitarium, Doom, etc.

It's funny though, playing Slender: The Eight Pages I can't help but ask myself, "Why am I doing this?" I'm frightened out of my mind, I'm sweating, I can't even bring myself to turn my character around to make sure Slenderman isn't on my heels. Heck, I can't even bring myself to turn my chair around, he could be right behind me watching as I play!

Maybe I enjoy being scared? Or just being relieved knowing I've gotten past the worst and I can go forth like a champion. Maybe I'll keep asking myself this question without any real answer. So, fellow fans of making yourself poop your own pants! Why do you do it!

I just want to know how after all those years you aren't desensitized.

VidjaGamez4975d ago

Well, I can say I don't get as "freaked out" as I used to. Eventually the absolute need to accomplish and complete the game takes over and I forget that I should be sitting there feeling nervous about my every move.

I can't play slender games they are too scary.

I've become desensitized to scripted horror games.
You know, games where enemies hide in a closet waiting for you to arrive, and then jump out and scream loudly like they're throwing a badly planned birthday party?

After a while, you notice the gears behind the game and it looses it's charm. Kinda like when you notice a switch or mechanism behind a funhouse.

Games that are less scripted, still scare me. Even Minecraft can scare me. Developers need to realize that it's not just spooky atmosphere and scary monsters that causes horror; there actually need to be some sense of danger... which doesn't happen when you know everything is tightly following a script.

It's why I still find games like Stalker, or even an old game like SystemShock2, to be scary. You're alone, and you're wandering around in an area where enemies can be anywhere. The exact number of enemies in an area might not change, but their location is at least changing. As such, they can sneak up on you at any time, and if you're not paying attention, you can land yourself into situations in which you have no hope of escaping.

As for why I do it. I enjoy the challenge. Perhaps I'm actually hoping to be desensitized in order to be braver in real life.

SCP-087 should be your next free horror game video.

VidjaGamez4974d ago

I did play that not too long ago, great part about it was that it made you so nervous and then after a while you felt safe, like nothing was going to happen and then Boom! You were freaking out over a shadow you *thought* you might have seen. >_<

Nice videos and sound quality. What do you use? Is it all FRAPS? And do you have a really nice mic or soundcard with some other audio software to record it? Just curious as I'd like to do this sort of stuff.

VidjaGamez4973d ago

I use Fraps, for the moment I am using the mic on my Lifecam. And funny enough, I just use the basic windows sound recorder.

When I first played Alone in the Dark (on the 3DO if I remember correctly), it scared the absolute crap out of me. I think it was the ambient sound effects more than anything, honestly. It was a good game, for its day.

I had the hell with Fatal Frame I in my xbox. It was strange because I was very addicted to it, finished almost three times, besides I was very scared and even having nigthmares with the game. After finishing it took me abount 7 years to try Fatal Frame II - Crimson Butterfly.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing37d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9237d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit37d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing37d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9237d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
