Piracy to Doom the 360?

Piracy has been an issue as long as games have been around, but considering the rising cost of developing games, can developers afford to ignore it any longer.  In the past two weeks three major torrents have been leaked onto the internet:  Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, and now Gears of War 2.  The fact that two of these titles are multi-platform makes it even more interesting.

The problem is DVD9 security, and that of MS has been compromised.  And as a developer, I would reconsider which console I was putting titles out for.  Because although there is a larger install base for the 360, and therefore a higher potential for profit.  Now apparently you are risking piracy of your software by releasing on this format.

Unless MS adopts new digital piracy protection practices, then I would assume to see a big shift from multi-console developing to single console in an effort to protect the developers' sole interest... profits

The ball is in your court Microsoft... crack down and fix this problem, or risk losing a large developer base...

Well it was even MORE common on the PS1 and PS2.. Did it kill them?? Thank you come again.

UNCyrus6399d ago

Kill them? no... However, the other options on the market had piracy issues of their own... However, this is not the case right now... Only one of these two consoles on the market has a piracy issue. So, before you bash a blog, why don't you re-read it and see what I was actually talking about.

but that was back in the day when there were no real enforcement on it, when gmaes only cost 5 digit resources to produce a game, now it is in the tens of millions of dollars to produce games, developers cant afford piracy anymore

rko_kero6401d ago

I think your right. You cant compare this to ps2 though because 100 Mil consoles does not compare to the 20 Xbox has now. Blu Ray now is safe option, and if the PS3 gets closer in sales, this might become a big problem.

outlawlife6400d ago (Edited 6400d ago )

definitely not

other consoles have been way easier to pirate and they flourished

average consumer isn't going to know the workings of 360 piracy, the only places it has any major effect are contries where piracy runs rampant like india and china

UNCyrus6399d ago

The point is that 360 is susceptible to piracy, while the PS3 has yet to have it's discs cracked. There has never been a point before where one console was at risk while the other was not. So... why wouldn't you go to the safe console if you were a developer?

andyboy136400d ago (Edited 6400d ago )

Now why is it that piracy on the PC is a huge reason people say games should be made console exclusive, yet when piracy is rampant on the consoles, it's no big deal?

outlawlife6399d ago

because you don't have to mod a pc to play pirated games?

ultimolu6400d ago

No one liked a pirate stealing their games so you have a point.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster921d 2h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit1d 2h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing1d 1h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
