I know a lot of people are going to come on here and post negative comments without even reading the post. They'll call me a fanboy and tell me how ignorant and stupid I am, et cetera, et cetera. That's fine. I've come to accept that the Internet is full of undeveloped brains, so I won't be surprised if my comment section is full of cocks. If, however, you consider yourself to be at least somewhat intelligent and want something to think about, read on.
The PS3 is selling at the same rate as the 360 when it launched. This is good news for Sony, right? Well, some people think so, but really it's not. People say that the 360 sold with no competition, and that the PS3 is selling WITH competition, so the fact that the PS3 is selling at the same rate is actually a good thing. But it's not... and here's why.
You see, the 360 DID sell with competition in the form of the Wii and the PS3. What?!?! That's right. Most people didn't feel the need to go out and buy a 360 because it didn't offer anything new or different from the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox. Most people were also smart enough to wait and compare all of the next-gen consoles before deciding which one was right for them. Nobody I know ran out and bought a 360 as soon as it was released. They wanted to wait and see what the PS3 had to offer, and then they made their decision. So the 360 launched with competition from the very IDEA of the Wii and PS3.
People think that the reason the PS2 did so well was because it released first, but it DIDN'T. The Dreamcast came out before the PS2, and part of the reason nobody bought it right away was because people were waiting for the PS2. This is probably the same reason why the 360's sales were what they were, and then they ramped up once the other systems came out and people could directly compare them.
The fact is, now that all of the consoles have been released, they are all on a level playing field. Using the fact that the 360 came out a year before is a perfectly valid argument for why the 360 has sold more consoles to date than the PS3, but it's NOT a valid argument for why it sells more on a weekly or monthly basis. The fact is that anyone can go to the store with a wad of cash a decide which one is the right console FOR THEM. As of right now, more people are deciding they want a 360 over a PS3, plain and simple. If you use the 360's head start as a reason why it sells more NOW, then by that logic the 360 will ALWAYS outsell the PS3 because the 360 will ALWAYS have that year up on the PS3.
This doesn't mean the 360 is a better system. This doesn't mean the Wii is the best console ever because it's the fastest selling. This really doesn't mean ANYTHING other than, quite simply, the 360 is currently selling more systems than the PS3. Fanboys can argue over the greatness of their respective systems, but that has nothing to do with the actual numbers. Toyota Camry's are one of the best-selling cars in the world, but that doesn't mean that they are actually better cars than, say, a Lamborghini Diablo. There is a big difference between the straight numbers and EVERYTHING else. Aligning the launches is NOT and will NEVER be a fair comparison because there are simply too many other factors involved. All it does is offer you a skewed perspective of the facts.
To sum up: the 360 didn't sell well until people could directly compare all the systems and choose what they wanted based on FACTS. People now have a direct comparison between the 360 and PS3, and so more people started buying 360's. For the PS3 to be considered as "selling well", it would have to have a BETTER rate than the 360 for its first year because it has DIRECT competition with the 360. If the PS3 continues to sell "on par" with the 360, launches aligned, then it will never catch up.

I really dont think that people's feelings got counted for sales numbers against the 360 its first year being out now was it?
You didn't see on a sales chart
xbox360
feelings of wii
feelings of ps3
dont take this as some sort of attack against you or your statement but the guys at ps3 fanboy/joystiq had a chart to compare. And lastly, who's to say that the ps3 will still sell along the lines the 360 did its first year? the ps3 was selling the 360's rate at a 600 dollar price point. Now that the price is reduced, what's gonna happen? Anything is possible.
i dub thee sir idiotfanboylike360alot.joking but how about we wait till sony has some more games and this 40gig comes out to compare.i think the name playstation has alot of weight and in the end ps3 will win but thats my per opinion
the xbox360 was released first with no competition.
People decided to buy the 360 cause it was the new next gen system.
the average consumer I think did'nt wait for the other consoles.
yes, some people were hesitant to buy the 360, but most people decided to buy a 360 cause it was the new next gen console.
you really can't say what consumers really had in mind since you are'nt in their shoes.
but when people saw the 360, they saw the big next thing in consoles, and that no other console had what the 360 had.
If the ps3 sells at the same rate of the 360, I think a winner should'nt be decided between the 2.
it's a simple concept, the ps3 has to compete against two other consoles , the 360 had one year to it's self.
I'm not saying the ps3 is better or will be the winner, but I don't think it's fair.
Yes,the ps2 had a headstart on the xbox, but the ps2 was a different story because the xbox did'nt sell at the same pace of the ps2.
THE REASON I DID NOT BUY AN XBOX360 IS CAUSE I DON'T LIKE THE SYS PLUS THE CONTROLERS ARE FREAKING HUGE (COMPARE 2 THE NICE PS2 AND PS1 AND PS3) PLUS ALMOST 70% OF THE GAMES ARE FPS AND WHEN MY FRIEND GOT HE'S THE SYS DIE A MONTH LATER. SO I GOT A PS3 ON NOV 17 AND I'M GLAD I DID CAUSE IS WORTH EVERY PENNY..............I CAN DOWNLOAD FREE MUSIC AND PORN USING MY PS3 U CAN'T DO THAT ON DUMBOX360.............JUMP OUT OF THE RROD AND PLAYB3YOND
so everyone has waited for all next gen systems to come out.you say the ps3 has sold as well as the 360 did in its first year so far.now sony hasn,t released any of its aaa games just yet
holiday season 2008 is what would interest me by that time we will get more of an idea where we stand in the console race
360 hardware is already crying out unreliable and last gen which i think will make the difference
no doubt aaa games will make the difference thats what sony will be ramping up in 2008 and exclusives will be key
