Microsoft Respond To Gamer Informer Survey

Fifty four percent failure rate…

Game Informer’s survey says the the 360 has a failure rate over 54% among 5,000 their readers.  And that’s exactly how everyone who read the survey should have understood the information it provided.  5,000 people some who probably don’t even own a 360 took part in an uncontrolled survey.  5,000 people who most certainly aren’t biased when it comes to their beloved game consoles took part in an uncontrolled survey.  I’m not dismissing the survey as complete bullsheit but you can certainly see the huge margin for error and tainted results.  That being said…

Microsoft has issued a statement regarding the GI survey:

Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry. We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of ‘most played console’ and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.

As is customary with all statements from Microsoft they never truly flat out admit anything or submit their own data.  It’s the age old standard:  Confirm or deny nothing!

The 360 is a faulty machine.  Of that there is no question.  But to think that over 54 percent of all the 360 have failed seems ridiculous.  That would mean that over 15 million people have had a problem.  15 million out 31 million?  Worldwide?  And there hasn’t been a recall?  15 million consoles failures and there are currently maybe 4 lawsuits regarding the RRoD and Error 74?  Taking into account that the install base is smaller due to many 360 owners buying a whole new machine, that’s still too big a number to comprehend why there aren’t thousands of lawsuits.  Especially here in the USA where people sue large corporations every minute.  And the US is where the 360 has it’s largest install base.

We know that the Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, and Opus motherboard configurations have all fallen victim to the RRoD.  And that Jasper the latest revision currently being used is supposedly less likely to fail.  But is it too late?  The console war is now heating up.  The 360 and the Ps3 are now lowering their price points and the holiday season is just around the corner.  Will this “informative” survey, Tweets and blogs regarding the 360 hardware failures be enough derail it’s momentum.  The 360 is the only console showing a growing install base in 2009 compared to Sony and Nintendo whose numbers are in decline.

Even with all the trouble and all the RROD information available the Xbox 360 managed to sell 203,000 units in the US.  That doesn’t even include the rest of the world.  The UK/European install base is 13 million and counting.

How many of those new units are people buying a 2nd machine due to a hardware failure?  36.4% if you go by the Gamer Informer survey.

I agree, I remember seeing the survey reveal what it's about= failure rates. Come on GI, its common sense that you don't reveal to a surveyer what the survey is. The only way to be sure is to survay ALL Xbox owners, plus factor in the free warranty...I'm not trying to excuse the failure rate, but I ewant people to remember those two things.

It is an alarming # MS put out the billion dollar (also alarming) waranty plan back when a retailers survey found the failure rate was 33% the suckers failed 3 times on me before I gave up trying to get a reliable unit and I heard worse from others online and off. I thought it was crazy to get 3 failed consoles in such a short span of time.

The numbers most likely don't accurately reflect.

However, extended warranties and MS's repeated attempts to engineer the problem out says the defect exists and in great enough numbers. There would be little case for either of those reactionary measures if the machine ran as perfectly as MS advertised. The true percentage will never surface, but we know enough to realise failure rates were at an unacceptable level.

My question is, why doesn't Microsoft refute those numbers? Even though most 360's are probably returned to the stores first, Microsoft has to know approx what the failure rate is. If it's now better, why don't they tell us what it is so consumers can buy 360's with greater peace of mind? It's a great console, so long as it's working.

PS3 has sold over 30 million units.... we know how many ps3 fan boys fell for that one ....

Mwaan6106d ago

The failure rate for these surveys are always high because they include the launch day units, which were garbage. As for the systems sitting on the shelf right now, I doubt it's more than 10%. I don't think the 360 is a bad investment because of the 3 year warranty, but then again, maybe I'm a little more forgiving because I'm about to buy my 5th PS2.

Like I said in the blog. 15 million defective consoles and only 4 people trying to get class action suits against Microsoft? It's just unbelievable.

SmokeyMcBear6106d ago

you do know what class action means... right.. you know.. a whole bunch of people all tied into one lawsuit... like hundreds if not thousands of people can be in a class action lawsuit... just an fyi

Can you imagine if we start the same survey here???? With the amount of rabid sony fanboys and their multiple accounts on here the percentage would be much much higher. Only an idiot would actually believe these numbers.

SmokeyMcBear6106d ago

idiot is such as harsh word. Think about all the people you know that have 360s.. and how many have failed once... each of those people that have it failed once... is a 50% failure rate... 2 times.. well thats a 66% failure rate... 3 times... well thats a 75% failure rate. Now take on of our moderators syko which has recently turned to the ps3.. has had a whopping 6 360s fail on him.. so thats actually 100% failure rate because he didnt get another one.. actually I think one was given to him.. so thats 1 out of 7 working... yup thats an 86% failure rate. So if you think about all the multiple console having people.. it can get up there... math is your friend.

Boty6106d ago

just look at him, I mean come on.

Raf1k16105d ago

It's true that Sony fans could try to increase the result but then again MS fans could try and lower it. It works both ways and is why surveys like this are just used to give an idea of what the situation might be like.

It's not meant to be taken as fact.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing14d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing14d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
