Games that Deserve Their Own Movies

Movies based on video games have a poor track record these days. The movie industry doesn’t always care to produce quality movies based around some of our favorite games. Though, we gamers always seem to want to see our favorite video games turned into a movie. But why make them if Hollywood always ruins them? Of course, there is always a possibility could turn out very bad, but I’ll take those odds, the potential of making a great movie is totally worth it for us gamers and movie fans. Here is a list of games deserving the Hollywood treatment, just without all of the plot line changes that Hollywood loves to do. I’ve excluded upcoming movies like; Metal Gear Solid, Assassin’s Creed and The Last of Us, which are already in production and set to hit the big screen soon. Also, games like Skyrim won't make the cut, the main character is essentially whomever the gamer is, sorry Hollywood.

Red Dead Redemption:

Let’s face it, Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece as a game, and it was heavily inspired by the many spaghetti westerns that came out back in the early 60s and 70s. The western genre was huge back in the day and even to this day. Now Red Dead Redemption has one of the best storylines, and it could easily translate into a movie. Of course, we’d need a good director on board and a worthwhile cast of actors, NORMAN REEDUS as John Marston Anyone???

Call of Duty Franchise:

I know Call of Duty has sort of lost a lot of fans as of late with how they basically release the same game yearly, but there is good among the franchise. Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4 and so on had great powerful stories, and the thing about Call of Duty is that a movie wouldn’t need to follow the source material too the T. Yeah we fans would still want our favorite characters, especially if it was Call of Duty 4. A movie based around just 4 alone could make for a HUGE hit. Lets just forget about any future movie plans based on recent titles.

Super Mario Bros Franchise:

Technically we already had a movie based on our favorite plumber, but it was way far from what fans wanted. Instead we got a mess of a film, that many would like to forget. We may never see a live action Super Mario Bros. film, but we could easily see the likes of animated SMB show much like the cartoon show back in the day. Maybe even a CGI animated movie, maybe even done through a pixar/nintendo collab??? Imagine that, “Super Mario Bros. A Pixar Movie”. Sounds awesome to me.

Grand Theft Auto Franchise:

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular franchises out there. A movie based around the franchise could be big, very big. Thing is, what game would get the movie treatment? Or, could they just make a movie in the world of GTA with all new characters? Maybe set it in Libery City or San Andreas. There’s too many characters to consider, but that’s not saying that we won't see someone like Niko, CJ, Tommy Vercetti or other major characters appear. It could work.

Metroid Franchise:

Metroid is one of those games that is deserving of a movie simply because it’s such a classic. Especially learning who was behind the suit and how big that was at the time. Samus is one of the most popular characters around to this day, and it could work out very well. Who would you cast to play Samus? The franchise has only grown since the good old days, and a movie could certainly add more to the story.

Mass Effect Franchise:

Possibly one of the biggest story driven games out there. Mass Effect has high praise for the story and gameplay, and could easily be made into a movie. The characters are there, the story’s present and ready to go. Of course, it wouldn’t be easy to make just one movie covering everything in the franchise, but maybe we can get a trilogy. And even though there is a new Mass Effect being made, we’d still love to see some Mass Effect movies one of these days.

The Legend of Zelda Franchise:

Let’s face it, The Legend of Zelda is a classic, as well as most of the other games in the franchise. With the rumours of a Netflix show, it would be even better if we finally get an actual movie based on this hit franchise. Either it be live action or animated, we want to see Link fighting to save Zelda. It’d be stupid to not capitalize on this popularity. If Hollywood were to make this happen, here’s hoping they don’t mess it up like every other video game based movies they’ve done. Zelda is deserving of a legit movie.

Halo Franchise:

You knew this was going to show up on this list. Many gamers were happy to hear of a movie announced years ago, but when that was scrapped, gamers lost hope. There are good signs on the horizon, as there’s a show based on the game coming out soon, so a movie could very well be on the way, when that is, who knows. Halo is one of those franchises that could work in movie form. Hello Hollywood! Halo has been around for quite some time and could easily work as a movie franchise.

Dead Space:

This game is by far one of the scariest to ever grace the world of gaming. There is a few games out there that got the movie treatment from the horror genre, but they haven’t done well. But, making a Dead Space movie, could really be something special. Imagine someone like Guillermo Del Toro directing this, just imagine the monsters and the creepy scares ahead, this could work big time. I’M IN!!!

Half Life Franchise:

The Half Life Franchise is massive, and even though we’ve all been waiting for part three to the franchise, or episode 3 as some see it, there’s always a chance of a movie right? Well Valve has even stated they’d like to look into it. They also said they would not ship it off to Hollywood to do, so that’s an even better sign. The Half Life franchise has a great story going for it and great characters. Who would star as Gordon Freeman? What director would you trust with such source material? J.J. Abrams appears to be on board, let’s get this party started!

Those are just some games that we’d love to see made into a movie, but what are your favorite games you’d love to see made into movie form? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below. Who would you choose to play your favorite characters? What about directors?

Honorable Mentions:

Luigi’s Mansion
Megaman Franchise
Donkey Kong Country
Bayonetta
L.A. Noire
The Saboteur
Chrono Trigger

You failed to mention Heavy Rain, Max Payne and The Last of Us.

Nwah3976d ago

The Last of Us and Heavy Rain are already movies.

Valenka3974d ago

Not really. Just because they're cinematic doesn't make them movies. I feel like a lot more people would be able to experience either in film form, especially the Last of Us if done properly. Heavy Rain would be a game I'd love to see as a movie or even a TV show, but with multiple endings, it'd be a little hard to decide which ending to have.

rezzah3970d ago

Then why we were required to use a controller to see story progression?

Why is a picture book not a movie?

Why is a cartoon or anime tv show not a movie?

coolbeans3971d ago

In regards to Heavy Rain, I figure that would detract from the quality that made it one of the most refreshing 'cinematic' games for its time: the amount of variety in all of the possible outcomes.

rezzah3970d ago

Heavy Rain's style is too similar to the medium of a movie to stand out from the video game version. It would basically be the same scenarios we played except they might be shorter and will have different camera angles. I think a movie for games like Heavy Rain and Beyond 2 Souls would be a dull and a waste of money.

In the case of Max Payne, there already has been a movie in 2008. Unless you were referring to a remake with a better story.

The Last of Us could work. It has enough room for new side stories to be told, even to include new characters that could make an appearance in a possible sequel.

Sorry about that. Didn't think of Heavy Rain. I didn't mention Max Payne mainly because they already did a movie on it, but if done right, could make for a great film. As for The Last Of Us, there is already a film in the making. I would have listed it otherwise. I would have listed Assassin's Creed as well, but that is being made into a film as well.

Valenka3976d ago (Edited 3976d ago )

I don't count the Max Payne movie already in existence. Absolute rubbish, in my opinion, LOL. Especially Mila Kunis' poorly scripted role of Mona Sax.

I definitely agree with all of your choices though. I'm on the fence about Call of Duty as a film though. It would probably be good, but I've had enough COD to last two lifetimes.

TeamLeaptrade3976d ago

I completely agree about Max Payne for sure. It was one of those forgettable films. As for Call of Duty, I understand the hate it gets, but I really think it could work as a movie. Maybe not the more recent games, but it could make for a good WWII movie.

TeamLeaptrade3976d ago

Very good choice. :) There are many games out there that could make the cut for sure.

Roccetarius3976d ago

Making a movie of the first Deus Ex would be too much for people to handle. :P

lex-10203974d ago

But it could be so so good.

Concertoine3976d ago

I couldn't see metroid happening since they're literally a straight rip off of the alien movies. If you look at the plots side-by-side, its uncanny

rezzah3970d ago

Though it sounds like a great idea, the movie would have to be conclusive or be a trilogy. The issue with this is it would force Ubisoft to end the video game series early than they probably expected (milking for many years).

Without movies, they can run the series into the ground, this time could last longer than if a trilogy with a conclusive story were to be created.

One might say they could just use a random character in history located anywhere in the world. The problem with this is they conclusion to a trilogy would not be the overall conclusion to the entire story. Again this may likely cut their plans short for milking the video games for as long as they can.
