Lair - Friend or Foe?

Over the past few weeks there has been many reviews of the highly anticipated Playstation 3 game Lair.  It started with Play Magazine which gave lair a score of 9/10, when that score came out, people were like "I don't trust them" or "PLAY is not a reliable source" blah blah.  Then when EGM released there review they gave it a 5/10, 5.5/10, and a 6/10 and everyone was like "O Lair sucks," "I knew this game wasn't good," "PS3 sucks'" blah blah blah, even though EGM and 1up are payed by Microsoft.  But no one took the time to read those reviews.  Here are quotes from the PLAY review "

"If gliding over a beautiful starlit ocean to the haunting strains of opera doesn't’t impress you, you’re dead inside"
"It
also says all frame rate issues have been fixed."
"The only negatives were that objectives weren't explained well enough and confusing navigation sometimes."
"They say that some of the confusion is because it combines nearly 6 genres into one game…but once you get use to it, it is a game with incredible depth."
"It also says that replay value is extremely high–you can receive higher ranks and that unlocks amazing stuff such as new dragons, etc. to kick butt with".

Now here are quotes from EGM's review

GOOD
They said motion control was cool.
The ground combat was well done.
No mention of frame rate indicating it was stable.
They liked the epic scope of the game.

BAD
They thought the dragon was a re- skinned x-wing
The dragon shooting fireballs was odd and wasn't’t realistic enough
The game had no map and someone asked if the graphics were good and he said “its High Def” and he didn't’t like the colors used, everything was brown and Grey. They didn't’t like the art style and said the game lacked innovation.

So it seems to me that EGM's review was base off of opinion and not how good or bad the game really is.  It's amazing how quickly one bad review can spark negative criticisms over the web.  The next review was the rumored EDGE review which gave Lair a 9/10 but that review was ignored do to Lairs delay.  Then Gamepro gave it a 3.75/5 which is not bad but its not good either and here are Quotes from the review:

Pros: Gorgeous graphics, amazing orchestral soundtrack, dragon based action is fun.

Cons: The decision to use a SixAxis only control scheme hurts more than it helps.

Some random quotes from the review…

ON THE CONTROL SCHEME ISSUES:
“To be fair, the motion sensing is pretty accurate but requiring you to constantly move your hands around while fiddling with buttons over the course of a fairly long game is asking too much. It’s unfortunate that the game relies so heavily on a gimmicky feature that no one has been able to get a true grasp of (pun intended).”

So once again it seems like the only bad thing about the game is based on opinion. then comes the GamerTV review which gives it a 3/5.  And there reasons for such an average score was because it didn't have a Multiplayer mode.  Bioshock doesn't have a multiplayer mode but no one is holding that against it.  Then there was PSW's Review which gave Lair an 8/10 and here are quotes from there review:

+ Always so much going on
+ Stunning attention to detail
+ Intuitive control set-up
- Not the longest of games

So it seems like the game was good enough for them to want more.  So before you base you opinions on whether or not you should get Lair don't base it off of reviews.  Be your own reviewer and judge for yourself.  How can a game that looks this good be bad?

How...In the name of our lord...Did this article get approved.

I'm a PS3 fan, and I disapprove of this message.

Edit: The only one decent thing about this article, just look at the screenshots.

It's really sad a game with such nice visuals is taking such criticism.

This is a blog not an article, so there is no approval process required.

Good job detective dipsh*t, feel like showing us some evidence? Maybe a check from MS to EGM in the amount of 20 million dollars?

the only thing you have to do is watch the podcast. if you did you would see that all advertisement is for xbox products which in theory means some form on paid out is being made. And it's a really shame that, that is the only thing you took from the post.

I disagree with the "paid by M$." Instead it should be about xbot reviewers (Garnet Lee is anti-Warhawk and anti-Lair). He always whines about the sixaxis. Plus, he's old school and we all know about old dogs learning new tricks.

The rest of the comments make good points.

Well, I kinda agree. I think Lair has been getting a bad rap, most especially from EGM, the review didn't even make sense. And though you may not have evidence that 1up and EGM are getting some moolah from MS, I have has the feeling that they might be. I tould make sense with Ziff Davis in serious financial trouble and all the money they threw at Rockstar and probably Paramount. I am still getting Lair regardless of the reviews, same with Warhawk.

I'm definitely going to pick up Lair, I made my mind up a while ago. I've seen the videos for myself and I've seen people control it with the SIXAXIS and I'm already sold.
