My 2011 multiplayer experiences part2

... CONTINUE

RESISTANCE 3

KIND of GAME: retro-futuristic shooting, set in the ‘50s but with alien technology

PROs and CONs:
Pros > Super-cool weapons and abilities, nice leveling up, good maps and gameplay, fast matches
Cons > low frame-rate, abilities make the difference giving substantial advantage to more advanced players (but, after all, that’s what they’re there for, so this is really a two-sided coin!)

My EXPERIENCE:
An excellent multiplayer I really enjoyed. Lots of cool and different abilities, which you could unlock by leveling up, and mix with different weapons and skills. Cool kill-streak bonuses!
It offers a different style of shooting and it’s quite enjoyable, I liked playing it very much and it’s another of those games that I feel to be severely underrated as it’s quite polished. It’s biggest shortcoming was the frame-rate that, at time, really dropped too much. It was addressed with some patches but still didn’t manage to make for a very smooth experience (might have improved since).

Closing comment:
Another awesome, underrated, game.

WARHAMMER 40.000 SPACE MARINE

KIND of GAME: shooter set in the Warhammer universe, featuring Space and Chaos Marines

PROs and CONs:
Pros > great sense of weight, nice leveling up
Cons > only 2 race (space and chaos marine), very limited gameplay / game-modes, decent maps but not spectacular, one can level up even offline, very lagged

My EXPERIENCE:
I looked forward to this as I had demoed it and the Space Marine feel and mood seemed to be there. Unfortunately as far as the multi-player experience is concerned it’s pretty scarce and not particularly engaging. Just a few maps with a decent design and with only space vs chaos marine the thrill is quite limited as they’re basically the same race shooting-wise.
Add to it that they screwed and the online wasn’t available to PS3 users for a couple of weeks and when I finally logged online (the day it became available) most people had already leveled up to the max: yep, offline level up is lame!

Closing comment:
I love the warhammer setting, but this multiplayer looks too generic.

GEARS OF WAR 3

KIND of GAME: sci-fi futuristic shooting

PROs and CONs:
Pros > very immediate, nice weapons, it’s cool to have special weapons scattered on the map
Cons > only character unlock on leveling up, limited and repetitive gameplay, small and simple maps

My EXPERIENCE:
Its peculiarity is the “shooting in the living room” feel typical of the Gears of War series, in that sense, it makes a good work.
While that’s nice and different for a while it becomes repetitive and a bit boring quite quickly. The maps are necessarily small and this allows for very little strategy, so it’s basically everyone runs to grab the power weapons first and then shoot each other without much thought; it’s a bit ninny, no learning curve at all.
May offer a different shooting experience for a while but the most exciting thing is the “gore” of kills.

Closing comment:
Gears is more about the name . If you love a chaotic and un-skilled game to play, this one is for you.

BATTLEFIELD 3

KIND of GAME: modern military shooter set in our time

PROs and CONs:
Pros > excellent feel, vehicles, cool game modes, emphasis on team play
Cons > teams are not re-balanced after matches and people too often drop out

My EXPERIENCE:
To me Battlefield is THE modern warfare shooter. It’s emphasis on team-play makes it a great experience to play with friends or random people (but with friends it’s so much better). Classes are well balanced, have cool skills and abilities and a well balanced team with different classes really makes the difference in a match!
The different vehicles are great as well, allowing for many different styles of play. You can spend all your time alone, near your base camp sniping from a distant or rush into the action with the faster car!
What I do not like is that sometimes team end up being very unbalanced and they’re not re-balanced at the end of the match, which means, most people on the losing team will just drop out. I believe some re-balancing won’t hurt and, in fact, make the game always playable.

Closing comment:
Overall the most complete and the best online experience.

UNCHARTED 3: DRAKE’S DECEPTION
KIND of GAME: modern third person shooter set in our days

PROs and CONs:
Pros > excellent feel, many different things to do (climb, cover, etc.), good rank up, many different weapons, nice play modes, very good maps. Excellent party system.
Cons > too much shoot from the hip, because of how it’s structured it could be a bit slower and tactic.

My EXPERIENCE: Uncharted 3 is an excellent online, with great, varied maps (although the dynamic ones are usually too lagged for me, which is a pity) and nice, different modes. Team-play is not required but it can certainly help a lot, especially in some modes (such as capture the treasure or king of the hill).
It sports some very nice ideas, such as earning the medals for your streaks or collecting treasure to customize your character (although that’s a bit too rare and random).
Considering all the available actions, such as climb, cover, etc. it could easily be a bit more tactic (something U2’s online was), that’s something that would make it even more unique and peculiar but it’s still a great experience!

Closing comment:
Uncharted 3 multiplayer is incredible funny to play. Great customization. Too much shoot from the hip anyway.

COD: MODERN WARFARE 3

KIND of GAME: arcade military shooter

PROs and CONs:
Pros > immediate, fast and frantic action, extensive character customization, great leveling up and unlocks
Cons > almost complete lack of strategy, very run and gun

My EXPERIENCE:
Well, it’s COD, it’s frantic, it’s immediate, it’s the run and gun experience. You can play 5 minutes or for hours, it can be very engaging. It’s all based on a very rich and deep reward system, on a great customization of the character (which is very extensive) and on playing for the next unlock.
It sports an easy learning curve, does not require too much skill but rather asks for very good reflexes (and eyesight to spot enemies) and maps knowledge.
It’s one game I play when I want some immediate and frantic action, it’s not something I feel particularly sucked into as other, more complex, strategic games manage to do.

Closing comment:
MW3 looks like MW2.5 and it’s not a bad thing after all. This game is the arcate of the FPS. Unrealistic and funny at the same time.

ASSASSIN’S CREED: REVELATIONS

KIND of GAME: a game of assassinations set in the 16th century

PROs and CONs:
Pros > unique, excellent customization, cool characters and nice, varied abilities
Cons > matchmaking is still awful, playing in team, for me, it’s impossible

My EXPERIENCE: definitely a change of pace from the “usual” shooters. I love the setting, graphics and gameplay but too often it takes too long to be able to play a match. Brotherhood was worse, as far as party making and match-making are concerned but this new chapter has still big issues. I hope they take the time to re-write it from scratch for the next one!

Closing comment:
The matchmaking is terrible, sometime the game is very lagged, but it’s a very, different and rewarding multiplayer.

Gears of War 3's multiplayer gets repetitive? Requires very little strategy?

You must have a very low K/D Ratio & W/L Ratio...

Aery5195d ago

I totally agree with her.
Also, if you judge someone from his/her K/D you must be a kind or think like that. She may have a K/D of 2 or 0.2 ... that not change the fact the GeoW3 have a very fun, but limited experience.

Kingdom Come5195d ago (Edited 5195d ago )

If you have a 0.2 K/D, you get annihilated, therefor, the experience won't be as good. I've been playing the Gears of War multiplayer since the release date of the original game, I have a 5.8 K/D on Execution, 5.6 on King of the Kill, 5.7 on Capture the Leader, 3.9 on Team Deathmatch and more, I never find the game to get tedious. And do you agree with their scoring COD higher? Despite it being the SAME game for year on end, I'd find that tedious.

Also, she doesn't touch upon dedicated servers. I'd like to know her gamer tag, because if she's claiming the game to be "unskilled" she must just be hating on good players. Gears is considered to be an incredibly skilled multiplayer, don't believe me? Look at gameplay videos...

JellyJelly5194d ago (Edited 5194d ago )

Horde 2.0 in Gears of War 3 is one of the most strategic modes in any multiplayer shooter. It requires tons of skills and teamwork to pull through level 50. There's no denying if you've spent some time with it.

I agree with most of the list (BF3 kills!), and it's cool to see a girl gamer who's this hardcore about multiplayer games.

Nice work!

SweetIvy5195d ago (Edited 5195d ago )

"Dear James, Gears of War fanatic", I'm glad you enjoy GOW and find full of strategy, many do.

For me, the concept of "being a strategic" game is well developed in games such as Battlefield, SOCOM, MAG. On the other hand every game implies some strategy, even COD with its "run and gun" strategy, in fact.

I have enjoyed playing GOW for a while but, honestly, after a while it gets old for me, the same stands for COD, in fact. I prefer something with a longer learning curve, that requires me to really get proficient to be good.
I also enjoy a game where I can customize my character, fine-tune to my style of play. On the other hand I also enjoy playing many and different games and GOW has certainly been a different experience.

8.5 is quite a good mark and, honestly, compared to other multiplayer, that's what I feel the game deserves, based on my experience and preferences, obviously :).

Honestly to say that someone rates a game with a low score because they suck is a bit immature, I suck at games I love and I'm great at games that I don't particularly enjoy, the opposites are also true. To not be too good doesn't necessarily mean not to enjoy something and being good at something some times is not enough to love it :).

Kingdom Come5195d ago

Firstly, I'd like to apologise if in any of these messages, you've found my tone to be confrontational, but, I'd like to consider this a heated debate :P

Secondly, I'm going to make the presumption that you have played the first two installments, therefor I'd find it highly unlikely for you to receive a great sense of unfamiliarity from a third multiplayer installment. The gameplay has established itself and has gained a dedicated fanbase, therefor, you can't change the experience, you can only improve it, who'd they have done, a great deal...

New Weapons, Original, innovative game modes, Abilities (Mantle Kick, Bag and Tag, Enemy Spotting, Weapon Swapping, More interactive Maps, more environental effects, Silverback mechs, Ribbons, Medals, Weapon Skins, New and extendable executions, Dedicated Servers, Weekend Events and much, much more.

Thirdly, I'll admit, I'm a Gears of War fanatic, I've been playing the franchise since the release date of the original game, have each collectors/Epic Edition and after my Old Xbox 360 broke a week prior to release of the third game, I went to the midnight launch and purchased the Limited Edition Console, so yeah, it would be easy to perceive my opinion as biased, BUT I am willing to admit the games faults, and agree we're all entitled to our own opinion.

Whilst I in almost every case disagree with each score you award each game's multiplayer aspect, I do like to see the amount of time you (allegedly :P) have put into each title. Happy gaming!

Aery5195d ago

@kingodom : EVERY experience is not good if are unskilled, but I have a lot of friend with K/D VERY low that enjoy the game.

Personally I found CoD MW3 not the same, but more bad than the others CoD. The maps are terrible and sometime you need more luck than skill.

The multy of GeoW3 was created to be very immediate, the learning curve is very short and the gameplay is focused only to be fun and everyone can enjoy the game.
There are some "price" to pay to achieve this goal and GeoW3 pay this with the very little strategy you need to put in each maps.
There are also other interesting things to consider ... maybe next time.

Anyway, if you love GeoW3, enjoy it and respect the people's opinion.

coolbeans5195d ago (Edited 5195d ago )

@ Kingdom

Although a term like "un-skilled" can be kind of a dicey statement to make, I don't see any fault in saying that because it falls under the player's personal opinion of the game. Her personal K/D or W/L ratio shouldn't really affect the overall opinion.

Although I'd argue Gears 3 has the longest 'skill ladder' out of all the other games listed, I can see that chickgamer's MP-likes are more pre-planeed oriented. Gears still functions on the fun, arcade style of map layout and weapon placement, which happens to be going the way of dinosaur since CoD4. Although I personally think that's what makes Gears, and even Halo (hopefully 4 stays the same), retain their replayability for years on end, I can understand some gamers liking to have the customization of other FPSs/TPSs.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio12d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
