The question I have for everyone is "Are we ready for Next-Gen?" or are Sony and Microsoft releasing new consoles too soon? A year ago I would've said yes I am ready, I was getting tired of Xbox 360 and PS3. I kept telling people how much I wanted something new refreshing, and interesting. The PS4 reveal was when I thought really hard about it and how much we aren't really ready for a new console.
Although this is my opinion blog, I would like to hear what you have to say so here it goes from my perspective.
I could be crazy, I could be just tired of the back and fourth articles but I feel like Next-Gen is going to be a little too pre-mature for my liking. At first I wanted this but then when I heard that a lot of 3rd party games are coming out for PS4 as well as PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as Xbox One. It got me thinking... Who would spend 400-500 dollars on a new system to play a game with better graphics?
Then I went to look at pre-order charts for the games ahead and I could be more right (in some cases).

(I know this isn't that reliable but its the most proof we have as of right now)
A few example of what I mean are (as of 8/29/13)
COD GHOST
Xbox 360 - 440k
Playstation 4 - 240K
Xbox One - 229K
Playstation 3 - 224K
BF4
Xbox 360- 287K
Playstation 4 - 246K
Playstation 3 - 156k
Xbox One - 125K
Assassins Creed IV
Playstation 4 - 160K
Xbox 360 - 129K
Xbox One - 104K
Playstation 3 - 92K
IF you ask me this looks like most people (at least on Microsoft's Side) are not ready to go Next-Gen. With the idea in mind that all they are getting are better graphics then maybe they aren't as reluctant to go out and spend 500$ just for the graphics.
It seems that Sony fans are more ready to move on quite well actually. With games like COD and BF4 and AC IV having pretty high pre order numbers. but why?
My personal opinion on this conflict is that most games are coming out for all 4 platforms (5 including PC) and its just not justifiable for people to upgrade their home units to a new piece of Tech for some games. Are Microsoft's new launch titles not enough to push the consoles sales? Are people waiting for a price drop, or possibly a Kinectless version? Is the fact that people may have a hard time trusting Microsoft after there terrible idea of always online/DRM? Is it the price point of the console(s). Would both companies see a significant boost in numbers if in fact the games considered "next-gen" are only actually coming out for Next-Gen (BF4, COD GHOST ETC)?
I'd love to hear your opinion on this matter. I wonder if Microsoft may stop supporting the 360 (like they did the original Xbox) to try and force people into the Next console? I hope that's not the case as the 360 is a staple for them.

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
1) this is vgchartz we are talking about, hardly compelling news
2) pre-orders don't really give a clear indication of the success of each system
with that said it does look like the ps4 is getting the most attention from gamers. what is surprising to me is how sony is for once not focusing on japan like they have every other time. they see the battle brewing in north america and europe and i don't blame them. japan did not adopt the ps3 all that well (less than 10 million) and the x360 did a lot worse (under 2 million).
sony lost a lot of marketshare with the ps3, namely in north america where the wii and x360 beat up the ps3. in europe the ps3 outsold the x360 but not on the same scale. north america is the largest region for console sales this generation and explains why sony for the first time is releasing there console first there. and so far it looks like the ps4 is beating the xbone from available sources. it could be as high as 2-1. the ps4 is likely doing even better in europe so far against the xbone.
this could all be because of marketing and how sony has managed the image of the ps4 compared to m$ and there stumbles with the xbone. or it could be because of the price or it could be because xbox gamers have simply moved on because of the late shift of input from m$ on the x360. i think it's all of the above. we have a 20% higher price for the xbone for kinect that has yet proved itself for games. not only that but on paper it looks as though the ps4 will be more powerful and without the headaches the ps3 posed. strangely none of this is really much about the launch games. i don't see the ps4 having an edge there and that is simply being honest. outside of killzone there really isn't much that would compel gamers to choose it over the xbone which is why all the talk and discussions seem to be focused elsewhere than the games.
the ps4 to many just seems like a better investment at this point. sony has the history of supporting its systems with exclusive content right to the end. the advantage m$ may have is it's online services (including multiplayer) and operating system and navigation. this is where m$ excels. they have also invested more into its online infrastructure. kinect could also prove to be something that does indeed show promise but the ps4 also has a camera. not as good but it's still an option.
i don't see the excitement going into the next generation like we seen last gen. that is because what these new system provide are mainly social aspects. i don't see much in innovation or anything going to that next level. going from sd to hd was big. the graphics are no longer that big of a deal. it will be the services they provide. cloud gaming could play a big role. right now the big push is multiple devices such as vita and the ps4 or smartglass and the xbone. the wii u has yet brought much excitement into bringing that in innovative ways where the mainstream public has accepted it.
the other big push is of course having the gamer be connected at all times. what m$ was going to implement on the xbone just wasn't marketed very well or clearly stated with the benefits. we will see this generation of gamers wanting to be connected. from games that will always be alive even when you are not playing with other people online to automatic updates and social integration. m$ just came out with the wrong approach and forced it on people. gamers will automatically gravitate to a connected environment regardless, they just don't like being told to. we will see the excitement of always being connected even in the early stages of these new systems. playtstaion plus will also drive gamers into this connectable world.
those who aren't connected either by choice or no other option will be missing out. simple as that.
I think Sony fans are ready to move on because of the success of the 360. PS3 stumbled in the beginning to give some ground to the Xbox brand. Sony fans want to get out of the PS3 and into the PS4 because of all the positive things it has going for it versus the Xbox One. After hearing "this will be the year of the playstation" since 2006 I honestly believe it could happen.
I think what might happen is that since MS turned off their own fans pretty hard and because there is so much invested into the 360 they already own, they may not move on. MS made the mistake of not allowing carry over of XBLA games to the X1. Sorry but I dumped a lot of money into my XBLA collection and so my 360 will remain under the TV for another 5-10 years and like most people I'm gathering here the 360 may be paired up the PS4 more so than the X1.
I see a lot of my friends' living rooms having the 360/PS4 combo. I know it's my frame of mind to sell the PS3 on Craigslist towards the PS4. I have little to no interest in the X1...even as a die hard Gears of War fan.
I can wait another year for next gen although I will probably end up getting a ps4 in February. There are a lot of people so invested in this gen that are not ready to go next gen. My ps4 will be sitting next to my ps3 and ps2 across from my psp and ps vita.
i am really ready
If everyone thought your way, then we would still be playing games on our Genesis and NES... No matter how you look at it; we rarely have a clean jump. Maybe today the next gen is looking bleak, but a year from now you'll have almost nothing to buy and the next gen will be pretty awesome. That is just how it works, plus companies still need to make money.
