Valve: Updates, No PS3, and Fat Jokes.

Read This:

http://www.n4g.com/dev/News-187992.aspx

Okay, now read the comments. I can wait, this is the written word, not the spoken.

I can fully understand why PS3 fans are upset. FULLY. And I'm not quite certain why Valve decided to leave PS3 players in the dust on this one.

Then we have Left 4 Dead. A Valve game that has the potential to be a new great IP for Valve. They aren't releasing it on the PS3 either. Or at least, it hasn't officially been announced yet.

Quite frankly, I don't know a whole lot about game development. I've made games using GameMaker, but that's not even close to being the same as developing for a PS3 or Xbox 360. I don't know if it's just more difficult to make games for the PS3, or if Valve doesn't want to support it for one reason or another. But I do know that some of you console specific fans can be mighty stupid.

I've gone on other blog posts saying that I don't bias a console. But do you want the truth? I bias the 360 and Wii because I own both, and it peeves me when I hear a PS3 owner tell me both consoles are crap. I know it's just because I don't own a PS3 (yet), and when I finally save up enough to buy one, I'll be happy and content. But I don't bias the 360 and Wii enough to be a fanboy. So I hope you'll excuse me for not knowing what happens in the PS3 section of this site, because I don't go there.

As I said, I don't know what happens in the PS3 comments section. I've never been to a PS3 only article and made a comment. And I've also never made fat jokes about a developer just because I don't get a game for the 360. I mean... seriously? That's the best argument you can make? A person that makes such a stupid remark must be feeling sorry for themselves. Yeah, Gabe Newall is big. But is that a reason why you wouldn't buy his games? Is that the main deciding factor for whether a video game is worth it? No, it's not. There, I answered the question so that all of you out there making fat jokes to lower your insecurity levels won't have to strain you brains.

Like I said, I like the PS3. But the level of stupidity that some people show simply boggles the mind. And really, if you don't care, why are you calling him fat? I know that some of you bought The Orange Box for the PS3, and wish Valve would support it. But if they're not going to, and you feel like they basically stuck up a middle finger in your direction, email Valve, don't leave comments on a message board that they don't even read. They probably won't read your email either, but if that gets you down, start a petition. But making fat jokes and calling the 360 stupid won't help your cause.

And be sure not to call Valve a stupid M$ humping company in your email. You may come off sounding condescending.

P.S. Xbox 360 fanboys need to shut up too. You need to stop posting in PS3 review and news articles. Just like like PS3 fanboys need to stop posting in Xbox 360 review and news articles. I know this it's pointless to say this, because it goes against the nature of fanboys to keep to themselves, but seriously... shut up.

bigshynepo6386d ago

Personally, I think Gabe has come off sounding just as immature in his interviews as the "fanboys" you are denouncing. I'm an owner of the PS3 version of The Orange Box and I have only bothered to play portal since the TF and main games are so buggy. Gabe is Fat, His company hates the PS3 and they have taken royalties from hundreds of thousands of Playstation fans for the Orange Box and have done NOTHING to fix the ridiculously broken gaming experience that they and EA orchestrated. Ps3 owners feel ripped off by Valve (and EA) and its my opinion that your writing piece lecturing rabid fanboys comes off as uneducated since you can not write from an informed, The Orange Box (ps3) owning perspective.

Stickguy2596386d ago

Yeah... but is calling him fat really the way to go? Anyone who calls him fat because they feel spited comes off as uneducated. 6th graders call people fat.

And you're right, I'm not an Orange Box PS3 owner. But all I was saying is that you guys could try doing something worthwhile about it instead of calling Gabe fat and running off.

And if Valve hates PS3, then so what? Just move along. You bought the game, maybe you learned a lesson? I don't know, I haven't been there. I do think he needs to explain himself, but what are you gonna do if he doesn't? There's no need for the high levels of immaturity that some of you are showing.

Valve is not a PS3 developer. EA Got the Orange Box on the PS3.

People who have the Orange Box for the PS3 should be happy it's on the console in the first place. If it wasn't for EA, it wouldn't even be near the PS3.

Valve is NOT a developer that makes games for both consoles. Valve creates games for the PC and the 360. That's it. If you're going to point any fingers about the PS3 version, point them to EA. Like already said, without EA, the PS3 version wouldn't even exist.

It gets a little old seeing people complain about Valve. I'm very enthusiastic about their company, and I can already tell you, there is nothing for you to complain about them.

360 TF2 update going to cost money? That's Microsoft's fault for forcing Valve to make you pay. Valve in spite of this will make the Update gigantic, and will be fairly cheap

Anyone who got the PS3 Orange Box and wasn't aware of the consequences, I feel bad for them. But they need to research a little and see why the PS3 version has problems. Think of the PS3 Orange Box as a faulty port by a different company, than a full game by the original company. Valve is a small company, I think around 150 people. They're working on a lot of projects, are you also expecting them to work on PS3 versions of their games as well?

Valve is independent and small for how much they're doing. Valve has talked about branching out, but they're going to have to get bigger first.

That was probably a lengthy read, but to recap on what I just said:

PS3 Version should not have any fingers pointed at Valve. Point them at EA, because without EA, Orange Box would only be on the 360/PC. If you got the PS3 Orange Box, and weren't aware of what would happen, I feel bad for you. But you can't be pointing fingers at Valve.

360 TF2 updates cost money because Microsoft forced Valve.
If you have the 360 TF2 and are complaining about updates and prices, blame Microsoft. Valve is trying to get around this as much as possible.

Valve is a fairly small company. They are PC/360 developers. Keep this in mind until they say otherwise.

If you want the best results from Valve, get the PC versions of their games. The updates come quick, and they have great support.

your response hit one minute before mine.. I obviously am on the same page as you but you need to accept that Valve sold out the orange box for a quick buck and the LEAST they could do was to have EA sign off on at least porting the game right and supporting their loyal Valve/Half-life customers.

You must admit, for Valve having "nothing to do with this", their reputation in one customer base is sure taking a serious hit over it. Valve should have taken this quality control into account before handing over all responsibility to EA.

P.S. You mention a few times that as a PS3 Orange Box purchaser, I "should've known what I was getting myself into" regarding the poor performance of the game. How was I, as a consumer, supposed to know that the final product would need extensive patching to bring it up to par with its 360 counterpart? Then when ONE patch finally game, it added more instability to the game than before it was patched. I mean really, in this day and age of downloadedable content, couldn't it have been reasonable to expect EA to remedy the situation?

SiN-MVGA6385d ago

Yeah, it might of been for a quick buck. But I think they had too much faith in EA. I'm pretty sure they would never have had the PS3 version in the first place if they knew this would happen.

But about the consequences, yeah, you're right. The majority of people wouldn't see this coming, and despite whether they did or didn't see the consequences, there never should of been consequences in the first place.

Valve took a big hit with that quick deal. I personally don't think there will be L4D on the PS3. Not by Valve, nor EA. I don't think Valve will take any more chances with EA.

I do think sometime in the future, Valve may get a legitimate PS3 team. It'd be nice for them to spread out (correctly). Personally, I'd rather have a good product on all systems, with out any excluded. I do feel really bad for the consumers, Valve, and Gabe.

Poor Gabe.

kindi_boy6384d ago

(let me start by saying people who have a good gaming rig and bought any Valve game on a console wasted their money)

Although i agree to almost 99% of what you said i really don't think Gabe is poor he is fat and rich because Valve is a good developing company and one of best developers on PC. but him saying whatever he said is not really the way to go either he just showed to everyone with brains that he is an a$$ or drunk.

for example Disney makes a movie and only distribute it in English speaking countries. a XaoMao company from China tries to change the dialogue to Chinese (forgot what's it called mandarin?). so you think Disney should take better steps before hand to ensure Xao not fcking up. because it's their movie or just let it go ? let's say Disney didn't care.

and XaoMao fcked up. Mr.Disney comes and say Chinese language sucks to begin with, this whole thing was a waste of time....

if you don't see the point and still calling "poor Gabe" poor then... you must be sleeping with him.

Although i bought the game on PC i can't respect Valve any longer as long as they have that person with them.

bigshynepo6385d ago (Edited 6385d ago )

I can not speak for others on this site but I used to be a HUGE valve fan. I have images from the original half-life burned into my mind and I probably passed the game more than 5 times. However, what Valve did with it's Orange Box IP is blasphemy. They took an award-winning homegrown series, sold it out to the largest developer in the industry with no strings or conditions attached and sat by and watched as "said developer" destroyed their Playstation-owning fanbase. Have I done my best to inform people about why PS3's Orange Box isn't worth buying? Yes. Did I sign that stupid "Valve give us a patch" petition? Yes. Will I buy another Valve product for Playstation 3? Probably not. Will I ever buy another Valve PC product? I guess it all depends if Gabe loses some weight. ^_^

But in all seriousness, You wrote a good article but people are going to feel the way they want and some people just handle "getting the shaft" a little bit more maturely than others. Doesn't go to say the immature responses aren't justified, just maybe a little excessive. Have a good night. See you on the "Left 4 Dead Announced for Playstation 3; Ported by EA" thread....

Ozzyb6385d ago

I think they should either take responsibility for all iterations of their product or not allow it to be released in that form. I play Orange Box on my PS3 and I don't have a major problem with it. But for a developer to respond so immaturely to questions involving avid supporters of his product, he deserves every last crack he gets. We are not talking to him face-to-face therefore it's all in good fun to rib someone who in all honesty, has it coming. If he didn't go out of his way to make himself sound like a jerk to me (a PS3 owner), I would not be as inclined to match his insensitivity.

Also, "Poor Gabe" is a load of crap. I'm sure he made out like a bandit with the PS3 Orange Box alone. If he declines his right to take responsibility, he should not get a cent off of that game. EA should pocket the whole thing. They want my money, but they don't want to work for it.. Is that something that can really be defended? REALLY?

Towers766385d ago

Agreed 100% He essentially spit in the face of every PS3 owner with his comments about it being a waste of everyone's time. It's easy to see how people who don't own or care to own a PS3 can defend this guy but don't expect PS3 owners to quietly take Gabe's foolish ramblings.

SiN-MVGA6385d ago

It sounds more like you're just more mad at Gabe for not liking your console. Who gives a ****, seriously?

There is no logic in complaining about Gabe not liking your console, calling him fat just shows your immaturity and lack of a valid argument.

The only responsibility they take from the PS3 Orange Box is EA.

Valve sat down with EA about a PS3 version, and EA went ahead and did it. But oh, there's problems?

So what do you people do?

WAH! "GABE IS FAT". It gets really f***ing old seeing the same old crap being thrown at Valve when the only responsibility they need to take for the PS3 Orange Box is the mistake of letting EA port it.

bigshynepo6385d ago

"Gabe is Fat" = "The PS3 is a waste of everyone's time"

Playstation owners and fanboys alike wouldn't hate Gabe with so much passion if he wasn't so vocal about his distaste for what is the follow up to the worlds best selling and most popular console.

What i'm wondering is if these folks rushing to G.N.'s defense are dissapointed ps3 orange box owners or Xbox owners who have no reason to take part in this gabe vs. playstation owners issue in the first place?

socomnick6385d ago

The people that come to Gabe's defense are people who respect gabe as a developer and as a pioneer in the industry. I think its pretty stupid for people to get angry at a person because they dont like the console you own. It makes no sense.

Ozzyb6385d ago

then you either have severe tunnel-vision or aren't reading these comments in their entirety. It's not just about GN (the new abbreviation for Gabe Newell) not supporting the PS3, but also not supporting all the fans he has that own a PS3. Please read this next part carefully..

>>>It's not necessarily about the actual box and circuitry (the PS3) that fans are upset about. It's the fact that he is ignoring a completely legitimate medium which many of his fans have chosen to purchase and support.<<<

It would be equally as deplorable for him to say such things about the Xbox 360. He should have more respect for his fans than that!

Also, you can't just blame EA, because unless GN and his team are seeing NO returns from Orange Box (PS3) they ARE responsible. It's their game and their IP. Plain and simple. If they were to give the game out for free, then fine, let it be buggy as all hell. But, this is NOT the case and should be handled appropriately.

Just because you choose to blindly support Valve and Gabe Newell, should not mean that you cannot see the problem here. I love Hideo Kojima's games.. but if he tried to pull this kind of garbage, I would lose respect for him very quickly. Imagine Kojima saying "The Xbox 360 is a waste of everyone's time". Completely unprofessional. Then again, we would never hear someone of his caliber and professionalism spew such non-sense.. about ANY platform.

The problem is this game really seems like it would have to be 60fps for the John Wick “feel”. Unfortunately as much as I love my Switch 2, it’s pretty clear it’s not really going to be a 60fps system. Which is a shame.
