Call of Duty Subscription

Remember when there was all that talk about how big bad activision would start charging a subscription fee and everyone got scared...

Everybody was saying, "Oh if that ever happens I'm not playing Cod ever again and activision; I can guarantee you that"

Chances are you do remember that, but now I'm gonna ask you to look back on your black ops experience. The single player was awesome as expected. Zombies was pretty fun. OH and the multiplayer...

was extremely similar to Modern Warfare 2's, albeit a slight facelift, balancing, different maps, and a few other extras (and depending on which version you got; much more bug ridden/glitchy/halfassed port)

Rewind a little further to World at war and you have a multiplayer that is still very similar but atleast tried to differentiate itself from Modern Warfare.

Anyways, I guess the point that I am trying to express to you guys is that you are already subscribing to Call of Duty
and have been for 4 years.

Don't you see the games multiplayer changes very little every year they add a new 4-5 hour campaign with your package and a few other extras; and then they send you off and on your way with a nice yearly expansion/ subscription pack.

I'm not saying that Call of Duty is evil and it sucks, no quite the contrary, everyone is so satisfied with the game every year due to the massive replay value and content stuffed into the game each year that they havent even bothered to realize that they are pretty much subscribed. (with the exception of us ps3 owners who got shafted)

I'm interested to see what the rest of you guys think about this,
so please comment and thanks for reading

I see what you're saying, but it's not the same. Subscription talk is about paying $60 for a game or expansion to the game each year and then also paying a monthly fee to play the game online. Sure, people are paying $60 a year, but will they also pay upwards of $10 a month to just play online?

Look at MMOs for a better representation of what is being discussed. Especially games like EQ2 that put out an expansion ever 12-18 months in addition to the monthly fees.

oh yea i did think about that and i shouldve written my thoughts down on that as well but u gotta think here COD is not an mmo, and heres what i mean.

In an mmo youll have friends that you quest with lvl up and all that. By the end of that playthrough most ppl would've spent upwards of 100 hours, still not even 100% complete with the game. Then of course your factoring out pvp battles, going through it as a totally different class and other things as well.

With Cod you have the short single player (atleast compared to an mmo's story quest), then multiplayer, and usually one other game mode (Zombies, Spec ops)

A lot people play COD(but that goes without saying lol). Its fun to play. But of those people a vast majority of them are people who only play COD and wouldnt even own a console other wise. Add to that, that a good portion of those are subscribed to xbox live.

Now if activision decided to put a subscription service in their next COD title how many would actually subscribe...

A lot, lol but tell me this who, Would everyone subscribe to this; no. And would every body subscribe all year around; no. This would harm the Cod franchise greatly, because while activision would be charging subscription fees, EA and others publishers would be using this to their advantage stealing CODS consumer base and thus harming activision to the point where it would never be able to regain the popularity it once had.

Which is exactly why you cant look at this like a MMO subscription, this is an all new kind of subscription, unless you want to count the sports titles as the ones who pioneered in this service. And lets not forget the dlc map packs that are released for a ridiculous price.

I think a lot of people just fear that CoD will go more an MMO content distribution and subscription route without going the full on MMO route.

Personally, after the last four years of ridiculous sales of the franchise, I see no reason why they would tamper with something that is truly dominating on all HD platforms.

100% agree with u on that one if they do that then the game will suffer and lose all the momentum its been keeping

It's an absolute legend of a game. And I honestly really love how the remake trilogy is shaping up so far.
