Why so much fanboyism this gen?

It seems that the “next gen” of consoles has created much more of a separation between gamers of different consoles then past generations. A vast majority of gamers, hardcore and casual, will go to great lengths defending their console. Why are people becoming so emotionally attached to their gaming console that they can’t be open to playing or owning anything else?

In the past gaming has been seen purely as a hobby, or a form of entertainment. With the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 both costing upwards of $400 and games at an all time high of $60, gaming is becoming much more of an investment than a hobby. Consumers are researching the systems before they buy and once they do take the leap into the “next gen” they are stuck with a $400 - $600 investment. After putting so much faith into a console, people feel that their judgment is being questioned when another system’s fanboy puts down their system.

I hate fanboyism. I think it’s ok to be proud of the system you own but once fanboys start putting other people down because of what system they own I get out of the conversation. People who are so intolerant of other systems that they can’t allow for another person to own something other than what they do aren’t worth talking to.

Last gen I owned a PS2. Although the PS2 was by far the best selling system last gen, I wanted had an Xbox because most of my friends had halo. To me it wasn’t about what system “won” that generation of consoles, it was about what system had the games that I wanted to play. This gen I bought a Playstation 3. In my opinion the PS3 has by far the best game line up. I still love playing the 360 and occasionally the Wii, I just felt the PS3 was a better investment. It’s the exact same as many 360 owners feel about their system.

This is my first blog post so I hope it is up to par with what is usually posted here. I know I didn’t touch on the Wii much but I feel that most of the “fanboyism” is coming from PS3 and 360 owners.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. To me, fanboyism represents a lack of maturity. I don't feel the need to express mindless negativity toward a console that I don't own, nor do I feel the need to extend that negativity toward those that own that console.

Fanboyism is more rampant among those who own 360s and PS3s because those two consoles are so similar. Their similarities constantly fuel heated debates, which spawn fanboys who then turn those debates as well as others into ridiculous flamewars.

Being so different from the PS3/360, the Wii garners much less heated discussion and as a result I think the Wii fanboy is scarce. Very rarely will you see a Wii-owner on this site post a negative comment about the PS3 or 360 in their respective news sections, but Wii news articles are riddled with degrading comments from 360 and PS3 fanboys. This is just an example of how the negativity from the PS3/360 flamewars spreads to otherwise peaceful and thought-provoking areas of the site, detracting from the overall quality of the community.

Not all fanboys are the same and you know what, i don't see a reason to complain about them, it only brings in more Fanboys, however i believe that Fanboys are entitled to their opinions no matter how crazy they arre

I believe that I stated above that people are entitled to their opinion it's just that many people shove their opinion down other peoples throat.

Even so, doesn't mean we should acknowledge them by arguing with them, Fanboys power is comments made by us who has to comment back. If we ignore them they got nothing to say about. But we the non fanboys always think its better trying to reply back and etc, that is what causes fanboyism in this world. I personally have no problem with them.

"Why can't we all just get along"

I think that a lot of people echo this sentiment. I have a guy at work who absolutely touts the PS3 as the god of all gaming. It can get old but there are some good points that everyone can make but it still doesn't affect my feelings about my decision to buy my 360. I'm a gamer, regardless of purchase.

Grats on your blog post. Well done.
