Haters VS Superman 64

Superman 64 is perhaps the most unappreciated work in video games history. While many have branded it the "worst game ever", it's quite clear that many failed to truly understand and enjoy the Man of Steel's epic adventure into virtual metropolis. Far from the worst game ever, Superman 64 has a strong story and great challenging gameplay.

The first barrier that casual Mario players couldn't hurdle was Superman's difficulty. Superman 64 had the perfect amount of challenge to it. You could FEEL Superman's frustration as he battled to save his love and closest friends from the grips of the tyrant, Lex Luthor. As the game falls to 3 frames per second, you can truly understand the way Superman must be thinking to pull off feats such as throwing around man-sized robots and being subdued by normal bullets from stationary guards. The challenge is of genius design.

But the story is the real treat. Lex Luther creates a virtual version of Metropolis to force Superman to perform menial tasks like flying through rings to save his friends. Brainiac attempts to kill Superman with his latest weapon.....the tiny fireball that stalls superman for 5 seconds! How will Superman overcome?? Darkseid, ruler of all Apokalypse attempts to rob an Earth bank, apparently to fuel his addiction to prescription earthly pills. He is then dropped off at a common earthly jail cell, powerless and imprisoned. Even ET and Aquaman drop by to laugh at Superman as he zigs through rings. Such a brilliant story.

The biggest cause of hate against this game was clearly the fault of the green eyed monster. Playstation fanboys drooled in envy as the man of steel graced Nintendo's amazing platform. They pretended as though the glitches were game breaking, the difficulty too much, and the premise idiotic, but we all know the truth. They couldn't stand it. Resorting to even claiming it to be the worst game of all time. Can't we all put petty brand loyalty aside and be happy that a great game like Superman 64 released?

Superman 64 clearly does not deserve the BURNING HATE that it receives. Any idiot can see that. Such a gem will hopefully one day be appreciated, perhaps eventually seeing an HD release. Until then, we non-haters can enjoy it to ourselves.

I hope it is abundantly clear that this blog is a parody. In it, I address several things that bother me about the gaming community, such as blaming "hate" of a game on difficulty, the more popular "casual" games, and not being able to "appreciate" the story. Not to mention insanely unjustified use of the word "hate"

I also hope some of you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing.

Weird fact, btw: The same developer made a reportedly DECENT Superman game following the n64 game, but it never released due to a loss of license that didn't get renewed. In fact, there is beta footage: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Doesn't that just make you want to cry? I mean, the game looks far from amazing, but it clearly isn't finished, either. Still, if only this released instead of S64....

I was with you on the whole thing until this post. I always play my games at a forced 3 fps.

I feel ashamed to admit that my roommate and I actually did a playthrough of this together... what's worse is how good we got at it. First we would trade off everytime we died or "lex wins" but we got to a point where that just wouldn't happen. We got to a point where it would literally take hours for us to lose, so we would have to trade off randomly to prevent suicide. The game is so bad that most of the fun you get from the game is from laughing at it.

Seriously though, about 80% of this game is flying through rings in the same enviroment, who thought that was a good idea? I would love a chance to talk to the great minds behind this game...

There is some one on Youtube who actually got a hold of former a former Titus Entertainment emplyee who who worked on the game and interviewed him. It gives a nice bit of insight into what went wrong with Superman 64. The guy's YT name is ProtonjonSA, and said content is in his Let's Play Superman 64 videos.

I saw that. Apparently, the issues were more with the licensors than the people who made the game.

If only people recognized the genius! Truly, the most brilliant work of interactive art, not that over-rated trash like ICO.

I thought that accolade went to ET on the Atari 2600.

smashcrashbash5046d ago

I hope that's a joke too. Question the hate of Superman 64 all you like but don't try to drag down Ico. But I am assuming your joking.

Fear not, it is a joke. :P

Wtf, no! I was afraid of this...

slate911h ago

Was afraid they were doing to mess with the core elements of the games.

Scissorman1h ago

i doubt it will be like the recent titles. the original trilogy had a lot of vertically in the combat. it won't be exactly 1:1 like the old games, but it won't mirror the new over the shoulder style.

I welcome that change, if it is the exact same system, we can just play the original.
