Why Bethesda Will Save Gaming Part 1:

This is actually my first ever blog. I'm more of a reader than a writer so odds are this will be a tedious read but I feel the need to speak up before it's too late or I'll never forgive myself.

I admit that I'm a ranter which is why this will be in 2 part's rather than 1 and I apologise to anyone who feels I've wasted their time.

Now then. Oblivion. Fallout 3. And now Skyrim.
(And I would like to pay tribute to New Vegas also)

4 Things that kept me going through the Depression of the Boring never changing FPS Multiplayer that has plagued our consoles since November 5th 2007. The reason I include Skyrim there is because I've had more fun and Excitement from reading about it than any Multiplayer game I've played since It's announcement.

Before I tell you why Bethesda are our saviours I will at least explain why we need one in the first place.

Now I know that there has been Multiplayer before Call Of Duty, One of my favourite's being Shadowrun, A fantastic online multiplayer that had me playing with my friends in exciting and interesting matches in a brand new way that I never had before. Rainbow six Vegas. Need I even say anything other than Calypso Casino?.
Finally, Halo 3. Groundbreaking Multiplayer team work made for thrilling competitive online gaming sometimes with a beautifully yet painfully tense ending to a 49-49 slayer match. It would be cheers of joy if you'd managed to bag the 50 at the end or utter despair when you lost by that one point. But win or lose it was always as a team I felt.

Then skip to November 5th 2007. Call Of Duty came along and started a rather disturbing trend of the FPS being made repeatedly in the exact same way with a different cover on the box. This is when things got worrying. And now here we are with the 5th Call of Duty Game in nearly 4 years. Added onto that the failed attempts from other makers to jump on the band wagon and make some easy cash. And we are throwing it at them every time a new one comes out.

Even my beloved Halo have brought out ODST, Halo Wars and Reach and I lied to myself and said were great but now I can't look at myself in the mirror. They are all becoming repetitive, boring and worst of all they are made without care and respect to the gamers that fork out crazy money to buy them again and again.

We are forgetting our love and appreciation of compelling stories and well made adventures be it an Elder Scrolls open world or the more recent linear games like Batman or Mass Effect where you are lost in the beauty of the immersive world around you or staying up that extra hour to get to the climax of a gripping story.
And are instead choosing to shout to the T.V or the heavens cursing the man that made this game or the little ****ard that killed you. We play games that frustrate us, give us migraines and make us hate ourselves for even trying to believe that maybe this time they would fix the problems from the last games, which they rarely do. for our reward to have a better Kill to Death Ratio?. Or to tell your mate that your better than him at this and that. Too many times have I preached to my friends of how I lost in Fifa to someone I was much better than and I'm sick of hearing my own voice.

Remember folks this is only my opinion and I'm happy for people to put me in my place. I'd love to have a positive out look on Multiplayers but we are treading down a dangerous road right now and we need to act before our single player games become extinct. I for one will be boycotting online games from here on.

I hope this hasn't made anyone's eyes bleed and if you'd like to hear how Bethesda will save us from this Tyrant taking over you will be able to find:

Why Bethesda Will Save Gaming Part 2: By next week I hope.

Thanks for reading.

Appreciate its your first blog and all but shouldn't you have at least hinted as to why Bethesda will save our souls? :)

Just for the record, I picked up Brink a few days ago then clocked the fact that Bethesda had made it. What a depressingly crap game that turned out to be. On that note, i'm intrigued with what your 2nd part of the blog will have to say about Bethesda being our saviors. :)

I'm not anti Bethesda by the way; loved Fallout 3, couldn't get into New Vegas and missed the boat with Oblivion but deffo looking forwards to Skyrim. :)

JellyJelly5230d ago

Bethesda only published Brink. It's developed by Splash Damage. The people behind Elder Scrolls and Fallout had nothing to do with it.

Ahh, guess I jumped the gun a bit. I noticed that it was running on the id tech engine which was id softwares engine for Doom 3 and I thought they were aquired by Bethesda. Turns out they were aquired by Zenimax who were actually founded by a Bethesda employee. Messy. :D

That and, while only technically published by Bethesda, Rage was a rather generic pile of yawn. Shooting mechanics are great and all, but it was a rather direction-less affair as a whole.

In all honesty, I don't expect Skyrim to be a HUGE departure from Fallout 3/Oblivion. The main narrative will still be a bit lacklustre in all likelihood, which is a complaint that has been levelled at just about every Bethesda game. I imagine there'll be the usual glitches and bugs found in their games on launch day as well.

They're still fun games if you have an imagination and a story for your own character. I kind of wish the game's various NPCs and systems would help to tell your story a bit better too, I always feel they leave a little too much to the imagination and there's a disconnection from much of what you do.

Still, I'm really looking forward to it, this and Skyward Sword are my most anticipated games of the year :)

Pfft. Saints Row 3 will be the one to save us from the gritty and brown/gray games.

It'll swoop in like Zorro and fight off tedium with a phallic sword! En Gonade!

Scrivlar5229d ago

Ah you're right I should have left a little taste of things to come but since I've already kept it quiet I'm going to stick to it and keep you intrigued haha. Seriously hope it's not a bitter dissapointment for you guys though I'm glad the first part was'nt the train wreck i was anticipating.

Yeah I was going to say Bethesda only published Brink and Rage which I agree were just revolting. Especially after giving me dreams of a renewed Halo-esque game with the hype of how unique the team based effort looked, But that's another rant for another time. ;)

I don't think we need Bethesda to save us from anything. There are plenty of great single player games that aren't made by them, although the ones they do make are usually good too. Out of all of the games I own, the only FPS I have are Killzone 2, Fallout 3, Battlefield 1943, and Battlefield 3, and I have quite a few games.

If you want a bigger variety of games, you should check out some of the titles you might not have even considered playing due to them being anime themed, kid themed, from a genre you don't like, or even games that have a mid to low rating on MetaCritic. You might just be surprised at how much fun you can have playing games a lot of other people ignore. Just don't take it too far, you'll find that some games are shunned for a reason.

You are forgetting Sony who has the widest genre of exclusive games like heavy rain, uncharted, resistance, killzone, ratchet and clank, God of war, Littlebigplanet, mod nation racers, gran turismo, Metal gear solid, and the severely underrated infamous 2. New games coming out next year like dust 514, Starhawk, twisted metal, the last guardian, sly cooper, and lets not forget quantic dream's new ip so if anyone is "saving" gaming it's Sony.

BushLitter5229d ago

Without getting into a Sony love-dance (I detest Sony love-dances), this is quite true. Sony as publisher really has been delivering a wide variety of compelling games. I'm not sure about the whole 'saviour' business, but then I don't think gaming needs saving, not yet anyway. This year has probably been the best year in gaming, and next year is looking to be just as good if not better.

So no, at this stage I think gaming is doing just fine.
