Saaking's Blog 1: Activision, A Threat to Gamers

During the last generation of video games, Electronic Arts Games was lambasted for their business practices. Such practices included releasing what was basically the same game every year (their yearly sports series) and shutting down competition essentially trying to monopolize as much as possible. This generation it’s really changed for EA. They still release their yearly cash cow; however, they’ve been at work releasing new and innovative IPs such as Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space. With EA turned “good” someone else had to take their mantle and that someone is Activision.

Most of the controversy surrounding Activision this gen has been brought upon them by their CEO, Robert Kotick. It all began with their claim that that Activision doesn’t want games unless they can “exploit them.” Then came Robert Kotick’s infamous threat against Sony to cut support on the PS3 if they failed to lower the price-point and sell more consoles.

That doesn’t seem too bad, right? Well, it get’s worse. After threatening to cut support, they turn around and, guess what, they raise their prices in the UK. From 49 to 55 pounds.  If this wasn’t enough they decided to price the P.C. version of Modern Warfare 2 the same as the console version. Finally, Robert Kotick recently said he “would like to raise price even more if he could.” Apparently it was just a joke, but I don’t think he was joking at all. If this guy could raise prices, trust me, he would.

So, how is this a threat to us: the average gamer? If Modern Warfare 2 still sells as much as it’s predecessors even at a higher price point other game publishers will notice people are willing to pay more for games. Last gen the standard was $50, this gen it’s $60, and if Activision succeeds could the new standard be perhaps $70? Maybe more? Activision is testing consumers to see just how much their willing to pay and I very much recommend that you do not buy Modern Warfare 2 at this higher price point. Wait a little bit to buy it second hand or just don’t buy it all. Don’t support Activision’s greediness. While they are allowed to do as they please with their products it is us, the consumers, who decided if their product succeed or fail.

I never thought I’d say this but Activision has sunk beneath EA. They’re greedy and they don’t care about games or gamers. They don’t even hide it. They’re the definition of hypocrites asking Sony to lower their prices while raising their own. These types of companies shouldn’t be supported by anyone and you should know: if you buy Activision’s games you’re just hurting yourself in the long run.

Stop crying. From 50 to 55 pounds?

We pay 65 Euro for a game already for years.

55.00 GBP
=
64.3842 EUR

Jees, PS3 poor tards these days.

Saaking6015d ago

The price for the xbox 360 version was also raised so it's not just us "poor PS3 tards." I don't mind Activision raising one game; however, if they're successful other publishers will raise the prices and that's my problem. Games are expensive and if they raise the price more a lot of people won't be able to afford that many games anymore and only really big blockbuster titles will sell well.

TheMART6015d ago

So... Now you're paying what we already paid for years on the mainland. STOP THE CRYING!

Secondly, if game prices haven't been raised in years (since the launch of the 360 I haven't seen a raise, thats almost 4 years ago), with all the inflation of the past 10 years (this year because of the recession its no inflation, or even inflation but still), a raise isn't too strange.

Your food gets more expensive, all stuff in life gets more expensive, drinks and stuff on the terras gets more expensive, going to the cinema gets more expensive and games can't go up after 4 years?

Gaming isn't a cheap hobby. If you can't fork out some cash, stop gaming.

Wow, I didn't feel you're article was pro ps3/xbox at all, but i guess some trolls are always looking for a fight.

Concerning what you said, I agree 100%. Inflation is no excuse for a rising of prices (I actually thought the US was in a state of deflation), and we're not "crying". This outrageous company is biting the hand that feeds them, and if we cave, they will continue their mistreatment of the gaming community and will continue to take advantage of us at every possible opportunity.

To hell with Robert Kotick, Activision has a lot of good, talented people working for them, but of course, the fat cats love to ruin everything.

Mart's stop being silly, this has nothing to do with ps3 fans....

ya you always use to pay 65 Euro when our RRp in the uk was £49, so now its gone up do you think if this increase is seen as a success that it will stay the same ?

soon it will be 70 euro, then whats to stop them asking 75 or 80. after all, we are all suckers and to dumb to know any better.

Ya, we are in hard times, some prices have gone up for some products, and some have come down. Its all about what those who produce think they can sell it for, and what we the consumers are willing to accept it for.

In this case, many people are not willing to accept.

you stop crying about people who actually want to make a difference instead of sit on their A$$ and get taken for a ride every time people decide to up the price.

I'm just pissed at Activision for getting delusions of grandeur.Seriously these guys are pushing my buttons and disrespecting gamers everywhere

socomnick6015d ago

We'll if they jack the price up they might as well raise it above 100 dollars, that way we dont get no kiddies in the game. :)

Games for adults to be played only by adults.

I was meaning to write a piece similar to this..but don't really need to anymore...

The main thing that got me was activision calling out the ps3...if they care so much about pushing ps3's make exclusives or extra content on the ps3. There are millions of ps3 gamers world wide anyways. It is not like the ps3 is the dreamcast redone. I have all three consoles and play each for different reasons.

-Activision in the past has given me some great titles...but their greed is showing...look at the whole Brutal Legends fiasco

EA may have to deal with robbing the world of NFL 2k6- present but Activision is soiling their own name in 2009.

RockmanII76015d ago

EA made it so 2K sports couldn't make football games anymore (NFL 2K# > Madden #), but 2K sports made it so EA couldn't make baseball games anymore (MVP Baseball 20## > MLB 2K#) so they should both be criticized for ending a great franchise.

dreno3606014d ago

but one was in retaliation of the other...still wrong is wrong. (plus I play football games more so than baseball games) but from your name i think it may be the opposite for you.

and EA is the bigger company (money wise) so maybe that is why I see them being more in the wrong.

UK Court Rules Stealing RuneScape Gold Is Criminal Theft in Case That Could Have Wider Repercussions

A UK court has ruled that the unauthorized stealing of in-game currency can be legally classified as criminal theft.

Eonjay16h ago

IGN is a fraudulent clik bait farm pretending to be a news organization.

"that the unauthorized stealing of"
...You know as opposed to the "authorized steal of" personal data sites like IGN take part in.

But yes it is both IGNorant and morally questionable to imply that there is such a thing as authorized stealing.

Great month, sub nautica not really my thing but i can see why others like it, ace combat and undisputed look good as does the indie surprise ultros

Undisputed somehow went backwards compared to Fight Night Champion from 2011. Such a massive letdown.
