How Should Sony Market The PS4 Pro?

Sony recently announced their new console, the PS4 Pro, and the reception has been mixed to positive. While the system does lack 4K Blu-ray (rumors are going around that it might be possible later), and will not be able to play games at native 4K with Sony instead attempting an advanced checkerboard process to make the image quality on 4K TVs much better while also allowing all PS4s including the Pro to have HDR compatibility. All of those are great, however, should Sony try marketing the PS4 Pro differently?

Based on games like Horizon, Uncharted 4, and Ratchet and Clank, PS4 exclusives already have the ability to look beautiful. The one feature missing from these games? The ability to run at 60 frame per second. While the Uncharted 4 does have the multiplayer running at 60fps, the graphical showcase that was the single player has been dimmed down and the 1080p experience has been brought down to 900p in order to hit that crucial 60fps in multiplayer. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun no matter what how it's running, but how should the game run on the Pro?

Horizon has many people awing at the gorgeous open world that Guerilla Games has been showing off since E3 2015. With a Witcher type vibe and robot dinosaurs how could you not want to play the game at 60fps? Well, at the Playstation meeting Sony showed the game running at upscaled 4K with HDR and while it did look even more stunning would some rather just play the game at 1080p/60fps? If the game could hit 30fps solidly on a normal PS4 and the Pro has twice the power of thePS4 shouldn't the game be able to run at 60fps? Since many gamers still don't have 4K HDR TVs could their at least be an option to run the game at different levels sort of like TLOU remastered? I would love to play the game at 60fps on a nice 1080p screen with HDR.

Sony has been in the lead this gen since the start and now they want to break into the 4K territory which is completely reasonable. However, could the allow users to play games at different levels and maybe market this feature in the future? If they showed that a game could run at 1080/60 and 4K/30 that could give a very good message for those who haven't jumped on the 4K train just yet. Of course, in the future when 4K TVs become a popular trend (75%+ people own 4K TVs) Sony could be ready for that as well. But giving and showing gamers they have a choice about how they play the game would be a great step. Of course all of this is up to the developers of the game but still, how should Sony market their console?

I'm sorry for any technical errors that I may have said, I am not exactly the smartest when it comes to technology and software. These are just my ideas.

Should market it as an upgraded console that will allow you to play however you want. Whether you want 4k30fps, 1080p60fps or 1080p30fps maxed out, most games should allow you to do so, this goes for Scorpio as well. I think its the best way to handle it and should end the debate of those who want better graphics and those who want high frame rate.

I agree, lets people decide how they want to play. That's the best any game company can offer to their consumers.

No because Sony clearly said "unlocked fps setting"

Meaning though there's a boost, doesn't mean 60FPS could be the standard. Marketing it as a 1080P 60FPS console would be misleading in a sense that not every game would still be able to achieve that

NotEvenMyFinalForm3515d ago (Edited 3515d ago )

I think they would if they could but truth is that the Pro's still bottlenecked by its CPU. Even by lowering resolution and graphic settings Rise of Tomb Raider can't still hit 60fps, it's mostly 45fps at the moment unless some miracle happen before its final release.

It basically would be for me, since I don't have a 4k screen in any form in my home.

ApocalypseShadow3515d ago (Edited 3515d ago )

No.

People are still failing to understand the *basic* concept of developer choice and expression. Developers decide what they want from their game. It's *their* game.Only if it effects gameplay like online between PC, PS4, PS4 slim and PS4 Pro will there have to be a mandate that frame rates have to be as close as possible or it ruins the fun when there is an advantage.

Gamers need to get off the 1080p/60fps nonsense. Do games play smoother at higher frames? Sure. But if you can't handle 30fps, then don't buy the game or *make your own.*

When Sony released the PS3 and announced that it would support games up to 1080p/60fps, some gamers brains automatically assumed they meant all games. Now that PS4 Pro is releasing, gamers again are assuming that all games will or should be 1080/60fps.Without any developer freedom of choice. Some developers like graphics, some like speed and some like the balance of both.

If all that gamers are looking for is 1080p/60fps in all games, that could happen right now on the base PS4. Just don't expect increased graphics detail. And second, stop buying broken, unfinished games from known offenders that treat gamers like testers.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
