[Update: This post had a mistake which said PS4 had about 40 disk based games after 1 year, but it had 77. It also said PS2 had about 75 disk based games but it had more than 136]
1 year ago I posted this article: http://n4g.com/user/blogpos...
I feel so far its proven to be accurate. At the time I wrote the piece, the original PlayStation had a library of 2,418 games and PS2 had 3,870 games. PS3 had 795 games. So far its been a year since the PS4's launch and it has 87 or so disk based games [source: listwars]. I think this source is wrong and PS4 has 77 disk based games, see below. Around one year after release, the PS2 had about 136 games after its first release in any territory (see here: List of PlayStation 2 games wikipedia article). None of these figures include digital only games/indie games.
I also stated it took $5-$10 million to develop a PS2 game versus $0.8 million-$1.7 million for the original PlayStation [source: sciencedirect] . In June 2009 Ubisoft reiterated that major titles for PS3/X360 cost $20-$30 million to make and that games for the next-generation may exceed $60 million [source:edge-online]. It has now been stated in 2014, by the video game developer Epic, that it expects next-gen dev costs to double compared to PS3 [source: gameindustry.biz]

If the graph above is going to be 2 times higher for the PS4. Then one would might say that its likely that the graph below may also follow a similar trend.

If we accept the previous premise that "video game costs doubling compared to the PS3 generation will lead to a few number of games made". Then I would say that the PS4 will have about 400-600 disk based games.

Anchor released the full series of Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After on Nintendo Switch, providing a twist for the beloved visual novel franchise.

Prepare to jump into tactical plays and snow day mayhem this Free Play Days. Football Manager 26 Console and South Park: Snow Day are available this weekend for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members to play from Thursday April 16 until Sunday, April 19.

The solo developer known as Dizzie hopes to push a new update in between six to 12 months.
If you counted digital games, the PS3 list would be alot closer to the PS2. The PS2 had alot of lower budget games that would probably be downloadable games today. And the PS2 did take advantage of alot more japanese localization. Alot of those games are portable now.
Anyway here is what the PS4 has lined up for 2015. I dont think a shortage of games will be an issue.

I guess one difference is now we have a lot more smaller *non* disk based games. Some of which would likely have been disk based in the past, by smaller publishers.
When talking about the PS2 having 75 games after one year, is that referring to one year after the US release or one year after the Japanese release? It would only be fair to measure from when a console was first released in any territory since that is when development begins to ramp up.
In other words, it's an unfair comparison.
Since the PS2 released in the US 7 months after Japan that could mean that those 75 games were released at a rate of 3.94 per month (75/19 months). Since the PS4 was first introduced 12 months ago and it has had 40 games released it has a release rate of 3.33 (40/12 months). That's not a big difference.
Of course, if this is talking about from the Japanese release then please ignore me.
We're just over a year in. Calm yourself.
There's over 200 PS4 games after one year. It should outpace the PS3 at least.
