Microsoft, Is my distaste not reasonable?

Distaste on this website for one console or another takes many forms, but typically, results in immature, derogatory comments by one group of Fanboys, quickly retorted by more derogatory remarks coming from the opposing group of Fanboys. Such bickering gets us nowhere. In this relatively short blog post I will clearly explain my reasons for my distaste (I did not say hate) of the Xbox 360. Upon completion, I will ask a simple question and I encourage anyone and everyone to answer me with a comment composed as logically as possible. I do not want to start a flame war, what I hope to accomplish is more of an intellectual discussion of my question posed to N4G's gaming community. That question is, Is my distaste not reasonable?

I recently read a report of an adolescent getting arrested at a Toys'r'us for writing "Playstation Sucks" on the cases of PS3 games. His response to the police was "I have an Xbox and hate Playstation." This is clearly unreasonable and I brought that up for a simple reason, If that's your answer as to why you hate one console or the other, please leave it at the door and do not post a comment on this blog.

Ok, back to the point at hand.

Like I said before, I do not hate the Xbox 360, actually, I like it for the most part for what it does. It has a great online service and has a few great exclusives. What leaves a sour taste in my mouth though is how it has failed me over the years.

I'll start with the most blatant of those failures, that's the RROD / hardware malfunctions. I'm on my fourth Xbox 360 and on my third year of RROD warranty. Number 3 broke just before Killzone 2 came out, so I wasn't really that upset when I had to ship it out for repairs. But what did make me upset is what I had to deal with six months prior to it getting the dreaded RROD. For six months, my xbox would routinely hitch up with dropped framerates and freeze while playing games. After the debut of the NXE, it would take up to five minutes sometimes to bring up my dashboard friends list. Worst of all, sometimes it wouldn't even read games - including mint condition brand new ones! I would have to repeatedly open and close my disc tray untill ole' Bessy decided it was time to read the disc. Sometimes it would take up to a half hour of jimmying it just to play a game! My best friend had a similar problem (doesn't matter to him though, he still equates the Xbox to gold), the only difference was that we had to get a butter knife, insert it beneath the right side of the disc tray, find the cog, and open it manually because the button ceased to work after playing with it so much. We tried to call Microsoft only to be told that, basically, our Xbox's were not broken 'enough'. They NEEDED the RROD to be fixed under warranty. I toughed through it until February 2009 when those three red lights finally appeared and I was able to send my Xbox in for repairs. My best friend on the other hand wasn't so lucky, he instead picked it up and spiked it on a concrete sidewalk repeatedly untill he was satisfied and coughed up the $150 to get it fixed. Why should loyal consumers have to wait for a technicality to have their consoles fixed? I'm sure the revenue brought in by Xbox live would cover their meager expenses. But no, it's all black and white, or should I say red or green. Either wait for the RROD, or pay up. To me, that's unacceptable. Microsoft chose to release the console early to get a jump on the competition. Good business move, the only problem is that they did it at the expense of their customers, effectively biting the hand that feeds them. And what did loyal Xbox fans do? Did they rebel with a boycott? Did they file class action law suits? Some did, but they were snuffed out by the masses that chose to pay up and take the unethical abuse that that company was churning out.

Xbox live is another sore spot of mine. Yes, it's a good service, but is it enough to justify a $50 annual price-tag? I'll admit, since the first Xbox premeired, I've payed it. What have they done to pay us back? Absolutely nothing. I've been a PC gamer all my life. I have COD 4 & 5 for PC. Not only were the games $10 cheaper, but I have also received every map pack for them for FREE. Why can't Xbox live provide something like that? I'm sure it's Activision's will to have the Map Packs at a fee, but other things, like, for instance, avatars clothing, why can't we use our gamerscore as a currency of sorts to 'buy' more clothing? We already purchased those games or rented them at least so a portion of those proceeds were already going to Microsoft to begin with, but now they started CHARGING? No Microsoft, I will not pay 80 points for that hoodie or 120 points for that COG helmet. I could have been mistaken, but hadn't they said at one point that we would be able to use our gamerscore in the future to buy clothing? That would be an incentive for me to BUY and PLAY MORE Xbox games... But instead, just as it always has throughout the course of mankind, greed has won yet another round.

My final point has to do with the games themselves. I know I said earlier that this blog post was going to be relatively short, but please bear with me.

It has long been said by Sony that the PS3 is more powerful than the Xbox. That statement has been responded to by Microsoft many times as false. But from what I have observed first-hand, I now believe it to be true. I have never played a game with the same graphical fidelity as Killzone 2 or Uncharted on anything other than an amped PC. And the next line of Playstation 3 exclusives appear to be continuing in that tradition. They look utterly spectatular up to the point of photo-realism as with Gran Tursimo 5.

As I said before, I'm used to playing PC games. I own CoD 4 & WaW for both the PC and Xbox 360. I only play them on the PC, with the exception of when my friends are on the Xbox, then I hop on an play with them. Yes, I do have a top-of-the-line PC, and with that said, when I play those games, especially WaW, they are as crisp as can be and look utterly spectactular. The Xbox versions on the other hand, for lack of a better term, look 'muddy', as if they are at a lower resolution with 'muddy' corners/outlines to compensate for a lack of Anti-Alaising. I play these on a very nice HDTV with a 10,000/1 contrast ratio so it's not my TV.

With that said, I have never seen a multi-platform game on the Xbox 360 or the PS3 look anywhere as good as a PS3 exclusive. Is it that unreasonable to deduce that the Xbox 360's graphical limitations may be limiting the developers of ALL multiplatform games? On top of that, they sometimes look even worst on the PS3, which shows that developers care more about making money and getting the game to a wider audience than developing a quality product that works and looks equally well on both consoles. Hopefully, with the PS3 price cut,  developers will pay closer attention to that audience and develop an equal or better product with the hardware presented to them depending on each respective console instead of taking the easy way out.

Now to summarize, with the historically high failure rate of Xbox 360's, with the unrivaled greed Microsoft exhibits with the Xbox Live "Gold" service, and with the reasonable deduction that that console is holding back current generation games from what they can really be...

Microsoft, is my distaste for the Xbox 360 not reasonable?

Please, comment intelligently below, hopefully reason and logic will prevail and blind ignorance will be ignored.

stories like that toy r us thing and stuff like kid runs away from home because parents took away halo scares me.

just goes to show how far fanboys and addicts go.

paul03886027d ago

I came across that story a few days ago and it completely blew me away.

I can see not liking one or the other if you have your reasons. I voted for Obama and when discussing politics with people that may have been McCain supporters, I would ask them, "So, why do you like McCain?" In an intelligent, respectful manner. Those who responded intelligently and had valid points and reasons, I respected. Those who said things like "I won't vote for a black guy" or something of that nature, I ignored and judged them as idiots.

The same goes for console preference in my opinion. Logic always prevails over idiocy. That kid in Toys'r'us was an idiot (or immature/misinformed).

Guido6027d ago

I share your sentiments to the letter and feel for ya. I was a huge MS supporter until I realized that they did not support me as a gamer but would rather rip me off and sell me something I could get free elsewhere. I am now an avid PC and PS3 user. Kudos for putting your neck out there and making me proud to know there are others out there like me in nearly every single way.

NineteenSeventyNine6027d ago

One could argue that Microsoft are the most in touch with their fanbase. Probably be the best argument too.

Guido6027d ago

Sorry, but any corporation that knowing releases a console that fails is pathetic and does not care about the consumer. Any company that releases product that in no way presents itself with anything for free is subject to criticism. With Sony, you at least get free online and if you compare the price of the Elite and Slim PS3, if the Elite was the current benchmark then you could argue that Sony is giving away a free BD player, WiFi and rechargeable batteries with every PS3 sold.

NineteenSeventyNine6027d ago

Sounds reasonable enough but something tells me you already knew that. You probably just wanted to write a blog to point out what you don't like without completely sounding like a fanboy. An interesting way to flamebait, I'm sure.

paul03886027d ago

My goal was to keep the flaming to a minimum as I've repeatedly requested throughout the post to keep it civil and respectful. You said Microsoft is most in touch with their fanbase, can you please elaborate?

DelbertGrady6027d ago

They add features to make gaming more enjoyable, like NXE, the ability to create parties while playing online, cross-game invites etc while Sony remove standardised features such as backwards compability.

I never saw any fan polls begging Sony to remove BC.

NineteenSeventyNine6027d ago

Let's first take a look at the game libraries. The 360 has the largest game library this gen. Surely you'd have better odds at finding a game you'd like on the 360 than any other next gen console. Reasonable, no?

The Xbox 360 also has the largest amount of highly rated games this gen. It has about 150 games rated over 80% on Metacritic. That's about 40 more than the PS3. It also has 21 games rated over 90% or higher on Metacritic which is eight more than the PS3. Say what you will about some of those games also being on the PC, but they're still games the 360 has over the PS3. If having technically the best game library this gen isn't being in touch with gamers, I don't know what it.

What about online? Xbox Live has content for almost all 650+ games available, therefore, it has more content than PSN. XBL often gets demos/DLC from some high profile games well before the PSN too. XBL has features has highly sought after features like cross game chat/invites and universal music. There is a reason they're the most highly requested features from most fans of the PS3. XBL also has some heavyweight games in its arcade as of late like Shadow Complexe or Trials HD and both are higher rated than the most recent high profile game on the PSN (Fat Princess). It also has the highest rated Arcade game this gen, Braid (yes, I know it's coming to the PS3 but it's on XBL right now). XBL has this Inside XBox features where it shows previews of upcoming games and game tips from IGN/Insider's Moves themselves. Jessica Chobot is prtety easy on the eyes, too. They also have the Celebrity Game Night where you can play with some celebrities (I use this term loosely) like Megan Fox or Hedley. Features like 1 vs. 100 are also very fun to compete it and heck, you can win real prizes too. Avatars are kinda' lame, but I guess some people like them. XBL also features Community Games where you can make your own game and have it hosted on XBL for people to try out. Who knows, maybe there will be a gem on there someday. Soon, XBL will be featuring Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter. These are the most used social features on the interent and are now coming to XBL. It doesn't matter if you don't like or wouldn't use any of those features, but XBL is still superior to the PSN and a 50$ charge doesn't change that. PSN is not cross game chat away from being equal to XBL.

Yeah, the Xbox is built out of Legos. Yeah, it's accessories are overpriced and outdated. Yeah, the PS3 has better hardware and value. The Xbox still delivers on what SHOULD matter the most: games and online. Microsoft certainly understands this and that's why they opened up their wallets to buy exclusives games or content. Yeah, they really only want to beat Sony, but that means it's a win for Xbox fans like me (although, I do won both consoles). You can choose to play and own what console you like, and I understand you're a more than a little upset with your Xbox experience but facts are facts: Microsoft delivers.

I hope you enjoyed reading my essay. =D

DelbertGrady6027d ago

"Microsoft, Is my distaste not reasonable?"

"How Microsoft rips you off"

"What Sony can do to easily win next gen"

"Buy Wipeout HD + Fury Now"

FlipMode6027d ago

Sony fanboys, full of double standards?- Forgot that one huh?

DelbertGrady6027d ago

The last couple of days it's been impossible to post anything remotely positive about the 360 (in 360 news articles) without getting 10 disagrees and just as many comments from rabid fanboys calling you names because you like games that are on the 360.

Example: http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

I read your blog and it basically brings up a subject we see posted on N4G every 5 minutes or so. RROD sucks. I don't like it either but unlike you I haven't had it 4 times and the awesome games line-up and online service is something that imo I can only experience on the 360. And yes, I have plenty of experience with the PS3.

"No Microsoft, I will not pay 80 points for that hoodie or 120 points for that COG helmet."

The PS3 has the same kind of things in Home. Do you pay for those?

Then the stealth trolling gets even more visible with you writing about teh graphics and how impressive they are on the PS3. Personally I think gameplay is what matters.

Great graphics can be a bonus but it's never the deciding factor for me since I buy games to play them, not to hang them on the wall. Though I'd like to add that technical issues such as framerate issues and screentearing can affect gameplay negatively. But that's not what you are talking about in your blog.

The Dirt 2 demo is a perfect example, mind you it's a multiplat title that looks better than many PS3 exclusives as well. The graphics are extremely impressive but the controls are just as p!ss poor as in the first game. If I got to choose I'd rather play a rally game with lesser graphics and better controls and gameplay. Like the old classic Rallisport Challenge 2 for instance.

I do wonder why Halo 3 is so popular when it's graphics are no match for Killzone 2...

"with the unrivaled greed Microsoft exhibits with the Xbox Live "Gold" service, and with the reasonable deduction that that console is holding back current generation games from what they can really be..."

So Sony's decision to remove BC (a feature previously available) from the PS3 Slim wasn't greedy? Microsoft holding back the PS3 by offering the architecture that is easiest to program for? Tell me, in what way are MS holding back Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog and all the other PS3 first party devs from fully utilizing the Cell? Are they somehow forcing Sony into making certain decisions that aren't good for gaming? Or perhaps you are blaming MS for Sony's decisions?

What was your point with this blog again? If not to say "Sony and the PS3 are better than MS and the 360" in a stealth trolling way, what was it you wanted us t know that we haven't heard 2000 times before?

paul03886027d ago

Ok, let me respond to each of your points one by one.

First, did I mention HOME in my post at all? No, I did not. Why? Because I feel it's useless and felt like it was useless from the start. People are entitled to their opinion, and my opinion is that Home is rubbish. It was an interesting concept but didn't flesh out to what I thought it could have been. Others may disagree and some people may have had great experiences with Home, but I have not.

You said "Gameplay over graphics", and that's the usual response when Xbox 360 fans are confronted about graphical limitations. First, you said the "Dirt 2 demo looked better than any PS3 exclusive". Well, if that response wasn't so highly subjective I would have given it a sliver of credit, but since it is, that holds no weight. Second, again on your "gameplay over graphics argument", I never said anything about gameplay. I spoke of how the Xbox is holding back developers from delivering cutting edge games because of it's graphical limitations and how PS3 users are short-changed when it comes to their port of a multi-platform title graphically, and support wise as well sometimes, take The Orange Box for instance.

Also, I said the Xbox is holding back MULTI-PLATFORM DEVELOPERS from from delivering cutting edge games because of it's graphical limitations. PS3 exclusives have blown me away and the more I see, the more I like. Only an invalid would have said the Xbox is holding the PS3 exclusive developers back from developing games to the console's full potential. I never said Microsoft was holding back the PS3 by offering "the architecture easiest to program for." And on that subject, are you a game developer? Have you programmed games for either the Xbox 360 or PS3? If so, what are your credentials? What games have you made? I'd really love to know because if you haven't, you have no place to comment because you don't know if the PS3 is or is not harder to develop for unless you have first hand experience. You are just relying on what others have told you.

And for your information, to my knowledge, backwards compatibility was only available in the 60 GB PS3 SKU. Research that if you don't believe me. And how is that "ripping off" consumers by not including it in future SKUs? There are tons of examples of Microsoft "ripping off consumers". How about the Arcade model for $199? Is Microsoft ripping off consumers by offering a cheaper model without a hard drive?

And Stealth Trolling, REALLY????

I had an hour to kill and these are my personal thoughts and opinions that I though I would blog about to spur intelligent discussion. If anyone's a troll, it's not me...

Nice try...

Saaking6027d ago

Look soda, PS3 has games with much better graphics and that's a FACT. If your bringing up a multiplat to make the 360 look good then that's just pathetic. Sony took out features to make it LESS expensive. You can't have both. You either have the feature or the low price. You xbox fans loved to bash the 360 because of it's price and now that it's lower you bash it because features were taken out to reduce price. Doesn't make sense at all.

Tony P6027d ago

On PS3 development:

I don't see how anyone takes issue with the statements of numerous devs. The PS3 was harder to code for. It's pretty much a fact. We haven't worked on it, but we have the word of many industry professionals to back it up. And we have the results to show for it as well. We also have Sony using the cell in their machine, a NEW type of processor. Of course it's going to be harder to develop for than the 360, which was built to ease the dev jump between PC and 360 consoles. You don't have to build a game to understand that.

Because of this, it ties in directly with multiplats, which many times had the edge on 360. It's logical. If you're not familiar with the tools available, you're not going to build well no matter how much experience you have with other tools. For an intelligent discussion, you are far too content to blame again the old "lazy devs".

That is all old info though. As time marches on and devs become more familiar with PS3, multiplats haven't had as many stark differences in quality.

I don't think anyone can talk about BC this gen besides Nintendo. Both Sony and MS have pretty much phased it out. Sony is perceived as offering better via it's PSN store and original Playstation titles, but the Xbox hasn't been around since then. The fair comparison are last gen titles which both have pretty much screwed up on. Neither can afford to offer BC and both have dropped it like a hot rock, despite protest. Nintendo are the only people that consistently offer a machine with more or less full BC. Of course that machine is a Wii...and that's a whole other discussion.

I don't get why you compare PC games and 360 games. PC games look better. End of story. They look better than PS3 games as well. It doesn't matter how great HR and U2 look (and they look spectacular). Comparing a console's best technically to PC's best is like comparing a molehill to a mountain. It really doesn't matter how much worse a 360 game looks compared to a PC game. I'll admit that the PS3 has shown a graphical edge over the 360, but both compare quite unfavourably to PC in those same areas.

DelbertGrady6027d ago

"You said "Gameplay over graphics", and that's the usual response when Xbox 360 fans are confronted about graphical limitations."

I thought I elaborated it enough for you to get my point. But I guess "Graphics over gameplay" makes more sense, since PS3 fans like yourself obviously don't give a rats ass about actually playing the games you hype, right?

"First, you said the 'Dirt 2 demo looked better than any PS3 exclusive'"

Wrong. I said it looks better than "many PS3 exclusives". Big difference.

Mention one PS3 exclusive that has a better physics engine than the multiplat game Red Faction: Guerrilla. And how was the 360 holding back the development of Ghostbusters when the PS3 was the lead platform?

If you are that horny about graphics that you can't multiplat games just play exclusives. Problem solved.

"take The Orange Box for instance" That game was published by Valve and developed by some team over at EA. MS had nothing to do with it. But if it makes you feel better blame MS for what Valve did (and have apologized for).

"are you a game developer? Have you programmed games for either the Xbox 360 or PS3? If so, what are your credentials? What games have you made?"

No I haven't. What PS3/360 games have you made?(not counting levels in LBP)

paul03886027d ago

So if I were you I would just quit now, you're making yourself look foolish.

Your kind of like the kid in grade school who would keep a circular argument like "You're stupid." "No, your stupid." going.

As I said in my blog, my hope was to provoke respectful, intellectual discussion. That criteria obviously doesn't fit your last response...

The only question I have is, what is a stealth troll? Is that someone that just says something that you don't want to hear, no matter how true it may be?

Before calling me a troll, Soda, take a look in the mirror.

DelbertGrady6027d ago

So instead of giving me an intelligent response you are calling me names and trying to convince me that you just won teh Internetz?

I couldn't care less about what people on the internet think of me.

In your case a stealth troll is someone that only looks for faults on the 360 without comparing it to other consoles and their shortcomings. Imo you made an extremely one-sided analysis.
