Final Fantasy VII is official...but why am I nervous?

On Monday, during Sony's press conference at E3, it was finally announced that one of the most iconic and highly anticipated game was finally getting the remake it very much deserves. It stole the show (and possibly the entire Expo) with a short trailer that shows glimpses of Midgar, Barret's hand gun, and the iconic Buster Sword. Roars can from the crowed as the excitement consumed the room, myself included. Fans of the game have been waiting years and years for this and now it finally has come to fruition. Two days later my excitement has died down and now I can't help but now feel a little bit nervous for my absolute favorite game of all time.

I debated in my head in previous years whether or not if I truly wanted a remake. It's not like I don't want one, but I don't necessarily have faith in Square Enix to deliver an experience that closely replicates the nearly 20 year old game. I don't think staying absolutely true to the original source is a must, but keeping things relatively the same should be a priority.

There is an article from Gamespot ( http://www.gamespot.com/art... where Nomura gives an unclear response to possible changes to the series' narrative or to other aspects. I'm all for cleaning up some poor dialog and translation problems, maybe add some things to tie in previous games/movie in the series (i.e mentions of Genesis), but for the most part, keep the plot the same.

My biggest concern is if they will opt to keep the turn based (ATB) system or go for a more modern approach and use a Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy XV real time action RPG style. My hope is that they stick with turn based, but I feel that they will go in the opposite direction. I think turn based combat is essential, and it doesn't have to be exactly the same. The only good thing that came out of Final Fantasy X-2 was an addictive, faster pace, and more strategic turn based battle system. These are the kind of changes I would welcome if change was going to happen. I enjoy being able to control other characters in my party, I have complete say in what their inputs are, and strategizing next moves with healing items, buffs, or debuffs.

Change is necessary and I do understand things that worked in 1997 won't always translate well in the modern gaming market. I'm all for tweaks and fixes but not complete changes. As I've said, I believe it's important to stay as true as possible to a game most people hold highly. If not, then you might/will get an angry mob of people, and nobody wants an angry mob of people.

Square Enix, don't be cute, continue to give the gamers what we want and continue to listen to your loyal fans. You will greatly benefit from it.

Director: Tetsuya Nomura, It would be an action rpg.
Barret Third-Person Shooter, Tifa Melee Combat, Cait Sith a tank, RedXIII a Berserker, Yuffie Kisaragi wall running ninja, etc.

Original FINAL FANTASY VII director, Yoshinori Kitase is currently making a Turn-Based JRPG, called MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY.

Can we get 100 comments on this blog demanding Turn-Based gameplay? Maybe also demand the Original Director, Yoshinori Kitase to Direct FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE? It could send them the message.

Why not ask for a Change.org petition with 50k signatures asking for turn based combat? Probably be about as useful.

How about we let Nomura do his thing? Kitase was last involved with XIII's which we don't need to bring up.

Nomura is a far better director, and while this may be more action based, would that be such a bad thing? This may end up playing like Versus XIII was meant to.

Can't we be happy that this is happening instead of moaning like self entitled kids.

This isn't a remaster (meaning everything the same but with better gfx), this is a complete remake logically I would expect some changes.

This began production recently and with other projects going on KH3 & FF15, and with no details of what the game will entail to boot and I am already seeing people bitch non-stop.

Your chances of this being turn based are slim to none. When Advent Children came out they already said this is always how they envisioned FF7, but obviously technical reasons prevented it.

It's going to be action based, and they've put too much time into the FF15 and Kingdom Hearts combat system not to use it for more games. Crisis Core too was action based.

And while this is a huge game for fans of the original it's also reaching a new audience for the first time, and the only turn based game many of them are familiar with are the Pokemon games.

There's a chance it can stay turn based, but it's highly unlikely.

Hopefully this game actually does come out within the next decade. Square has been eating more than they can chew lately.

2017 is the 20th anniversary so I would make too much sense to be released then. With SE however, you never know. Expect a delay till 2027!

The game I really liked was a turn based RPG and that's what I expected over the years. If they change it to be more like the newer games I will just skip it.

Haru3909d ago

I really hope it's not turn based, that was cool 10 years ago but now is so lame

Number-Nine3909d ago

By all means, play a game that suits your preference. Fans wanted, demanded, begged for a remake of a classiC. They didnt ask for a game that completely changes the foundation that it was built on. It would be a huge slap in the face only proving how disconnected SE is with their fan base.

The only person that can lead a FFVII remake is Sakaguchi-San
