Why I'm Disappointed with the PS Vita

The PS Vita is an awesome device capable of playing console-like graphics on the go with a decent battery to boot. 2 years ago, I yearned for it and thought that if ever I bought it I'd be playing more of it than my PC and PS3. When I did not have it, I was busy playing with games such as Elder Scrolls V, Assassin's Creed 3, Singularity, Deus Ex HR, ME 3, The Witcher 2, and etc. And then came a time that I bought it eventually thinking that I would get the SAME experience that I had on my home console.

Truth be told, I never really checked that much news about the handheld and how it was performing at the time. I really thought it was successful and, yes, I've heard of its awesome launch titles: Uncharted, Gravity Rush, etc. etc. Problem is, those weren't really the games that I "dreamt" on playing albeit how good they are (if you haven't tried--which is a far-fetched possibility--you should).

So where are the Western RPGs?

This is too much to expect from a handheld console but when you are marketed with such a device that can play PS3-like graphics how could you not yearn for it? I mean, It has potential to become an Elder Scroll playing device. Who could not want a device that you could put to sleep while in the middle of a long quest? And when I was playing Skyrim I often thought about the Vita and how it could have had a game like it available at the time. But, nope, not a single one. Well, there was a Diablo-like rpg that's called Silent Hill Book of Memories, but that's all there is to it.

So where are the same defining experiences that came to PSP?

FF Crisis Core, Peace Walker, FF Dissidia, the Tekken Franchise, GRAN F@#%ing TURISMO, -- or at least another Pursuit Force, Dead Head Fred, or even another Death Jr. etc. Let's face it, Vita is lacking all the other games (take note, console-specific ONLY FOR VITA games) that made the PSP such a beloved device by many. All the Vita is famous for nowadays are ports. Period. Oh yeah AC Liberation was supposed to be console-specific, but no, they HAD to port it to home consoles too. Another scratch on the Vita for the possibility of being a wanted device.

So why are we seeing a lot of Ports?

Yep the most cliche answer is that the Vita is selling particularly SLOW and LOW. This is a disappointment on my part for not making proper research BEFORE obtaining a Vita. If I had known that PORTS will be the future of Vita (and remote play) then I would have just stuck with saving for a PS4 first back then and would have bought the Vita for later.

But don't get me wrong.

I love my Vita -- still do. In fact I play it's console specific games if I'm tired of remote play and still can't get onto the TV. Yep, THANK GOD for JRPGs. Luckily, its game library is expanding with more of those niche Japanese games like Danganronpa, Monster Monpiece, Senran Kagura, etc. etc. and more mainstream Jap games like Dragon's Crown and Ys.

I guess I'm disappointed with myself too.

Look what happens when you don't research too much: You end up with a good device at the WRONG time. If I had known that it would slow down behind its PSP predecessor, I would (I hate to say it) never would have bought it -- at least at that time. The reason I craved for it may be because I loved the PSP too much. Good thing I still have the good ol' Playstation Portable!

Vita's support clearly comes primarily from Japan where it's actually selling nicely and giving the 3DS a run for its money. Sony knew that audience was the most viable and they went for it. But at the same time it seems western adopters are being left to dry for now. It's a crying shame. :(

I understand that different people have different tastes. So forcing Vita owners on the NA market to buy Japnese niche games is a bit depressing since, you and me, we know how much we like our RPGs western right? I play jrpgs myself but these games are getting a little too redundant on the Vita. Anyway, I really had to rant since the Vita HAS potential but it was never given a chance to see some more Western outings. True, it's a shame.

Oh I like a little bit of everything, so I'm actually not too put off by all of the Japanese games. But the thing is you're right about the market in how western gamers tend to crave western games.

Great device but it just hasn't found its market. There are lots of great products that are not runaway success stories. I think the price of the memory cards hurt it bad and Sony started to make the same mistakes they made with the PSP. They made a handheld console system. I think this is where Nintendo has fared better, they have more games made for the mobile market where as Sony wants to tap into a high tech handheld.

At least Vita has a decent library of older games, and Killzone. Id buy one if they were cheaper

I hope the Switch 1 reaches 160M+ before production stops. 😅

There was a worldwide chip shortage when PS5 released so not an apples to apples comparison.

Pretty sure Japan had plenty of PS5 on the shelves to buy no matter what. The fact is, Japan has moved to mobile gaming over standard home console. Software sales alone show that.
