Nintendo are great game developers and publishers, but bad console platform holders, their games and legacy prop them up.
the younger generation don't remember but they used to have a PS1/PS2 like market domination with the original Nintendo system and Later Super Nintendo, that generation I was a big SEGA fanboy but I always looked at my younger brother with envy as he plays his SNES, later I eventually got my own and loved it.
This system was technically stronger than the Genesis, it had many all time classics like Super Mario, Zelda, Donky Kong, FF6(the best ever), Chrono Trigger(best JRPG ever), Street Fighter 2 (where it all started), F-Zero, Sim City(the best ever), my memories with this console make it the best in history IMOO.
Later for Nintendo it was one problem or another stopping them from SNES like domination ever since the N64, while it had some of the best games in all time like Mario64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time but the lack of disc storage made developers flock to the new PSOne.
later the GC was better but it released late and by that time Sony had most 3rd party publishers locked in.
the Wii was a financial success but it alienated hardcore gamers with the casual focus, the result was big 3rd party publishers could not find success and they abandoned the console with the exception of casual games like Just Dance.
The WiiU tried to replicate the Wii success with another attempt at catering to casuals but it failed, the problem is that the hardware was hardly any better than the 8 year old 369/PS3 generation gamers were getting tired of, the end result was Nintendo were left only with die hard fans.
Mario3DWorld was not the savior Iwata hoped, and if that didn't work MarioKart will not, at this rate games will not be profitable and even 1st party games could get canceled.
The prospects for the WiiU are dim without radical decisions, the console needs a big price cut, at $200+M3DW it should be good enough as an impulse buy as a kids present or a gamers second console.
For the future Nintendo should keep up with the competition, they don't need to beat Sony/MS at specs but they should at least be close enough even if the system is weaker.
My last word is to Nintendo fans, they should stop attacking every disappointing gamer as a "troll", the reason the WiiU is failing is because we the general hardcore gamers are not interested in what it has to offer at the price listed, if Nintendo listened to criticism directed at the WiiU even before it started manufacturing they could have set things straight but Iwata/Files-Amie were only listening to the choir, Nintendo fans don't like us but they need us

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "This is a collection of short Late Looks picking up on some of the games I meant to write a full article for but was too busy to do at the time. This time the games in question are the original Diablo, Balatro, and Kingdom Hearts III - a perfectly natural combination of games that you definitely expected to see grouped together. Not quite review and not quite rant, it’s more a casual assessment of what I – the gamer of the future – consider to be each game’s strengths and weaknesses in retrospect."
"Bottom Games are today very proud and excited to announce that their anthropomorphic hack-and-slash, ‘Verminsteel’, is coming to Steam in 2027." - Bottom Games.
"Bohemia Interactive and Enjoy Studio are today very happy to announce that their highly-anticipated sandbox RPG, ‘Everwind’, is coming to Steam EA on March 17th." - Bohemia Interactive and Enjoy Studio.
Nintendo needs to realize they have to create software that would bring in gamers who aren't hardcore Ninty fans..I believe Nintendo should create hardware with all developers in mind not just 1st party when it comes to specs.
Well said, good blog post.
