Uncharted 2 is NOT the best game this generation.

Oh, Uncharted 2. A game that got an amazing amount of awards from everywhere- and in my opinion, well deserved.

A title that was practically perfect on what it did, although it had one, ONE fatal flaw for me:

I could not replay it.

Uncharted 2 was a cinematic and set pieces-heavy game. It had things blowing up, it conveniently stopped you before this big piece of wood fell and crushed you horribly, it had alot of dialog (good dialog, mind you), and a plot akin to the ones of Indiana Jones, with some likeable characters.

It also had a mix of puzzles and platforming, as well as gunfights.

But...after playing it once, I could not bring myself to play it again.

Let me elaborate; everything was done perfectly. Thing is, the gameplay itself wasn't all that fun. It was pretty basic most of the time, in fact.

This is what killed a replay for me. Lack of fun. Too basic. Felt like a chore, we could say.

I couldn't replay the campaign- and being a Single Player-only (Well, most of the time) guy, Uncharted 2 just fell on the dark depths of my collection, being covered by dust as time passed.

I did not felt the same the first time through it- in fact, I could not stop playing it. There was just something that hooked me up to the game. As I've stated on this post before, it wasn't the case the second time through it.

Personally, lack of a great gameplay is a fatal flaw in a game. It is perfect for what it does- but it just feels too...basic. There's nothing AWESOME and INCREDIBLE about it, and a game that just feels boring...my theory is, the game was just awesome the first time around, but after that it fell short for said basic gameplay I've mentioned. The set pieces were awesome, the whole thing made you go "whoah!"- but, after you've seen everything the game had to offer, it did not felt fun nor incredible.

How is such a basic, boring game the best GAME this generation?

I do not know. It is perhaps just me- wich is why I'm going to ask, did this happen to you? Did you feel the same?

You could reply on the Comment section if you feel like it.

Uncharted 2 is the best for me because there is nothing like it this gen or even last. Sure there are 3rd person shooters, puzzle/platformers, adventure titles; but there is no other Uncharted 2. It has taken many elements and created a multi-faceted personality for itself. With that said, I could see that if one of its pillars isn't strong enough for you, how the whole thing might come tumbling down when you play it with old eyes.

But I've replayed it several times on all the difficulties, logged in several hours on the multiplayer, co-op, and the gameplay continues to excite me. The animations are smooth, gunplay is tight, and controlling drake is such a breeze. I'll give that the spectacle of the set pieces does wear down some but they're so well-done it never becomes a chore going through them.

Neckbear5546d ago

Wich is why it was so great. My problem is than, looking behind the polish, it just all feels so basic.

It was still a great game, though. I just hope things get more fun with the next game in the series, and Naughty Dog improves things even more.

Outside of N4G there are MANY people who feel the same way. Here, almost everybody has the same opinions most of the time. But go to more sites that have a better variety of gamers' experiences and they will have a variety of different opinions. Ask what their favorite game last year was and almost everybody on this site says UC2, yet I found on sites like Gamespot that opinion was much more diverse as PC gamers, 360 gamers, Wii gamers, DS gamers, etc. all had different opinions.

And ultimately it is just that-- an opinion.

There are definitely many great games this generation, and UC2 is by no means the clear cut winner, though it's not hard to see why so many think it is the best.

I never found it boring or that it lacked fun though. In fact, UC2 is one of the few games I played multiple times from start to finish after I beat it. I managed to get my first platinum with UC2.

I don't think anyone can really "hate" UC2, though I'd like to see people who do explain why, but I can totally understand why it is not everybody's Game of the Generation. There simply are too many great titles that do things either better, or something different than what UC2 did. And that is what we should really celebrate: the diversity of what games offer us.

I'm banking on LBP2 and TLG being my Games of the Generation :)

xTruthx5544d ago

Alpha how do you have the time to be 24/7 on n4g and be able to go to other sites and read even more lol ? and the majority of gamers will agree that uc2 was great, as for the best well... that always comes down to choice. But in terms on quality, UC2>Everything else

I know what you mean. I did feel like playing it again after I'd finished it but because I could remember everything that happened it put me off much like how I don't feel like watching a movie again straight after it finishes unless it's absolutely amazing.

Uncharted 2 though is a very cinematic game which is a bit of a double edged sword since it pulls it off amazingly well but at the expense of replay value. That doesn't mean I won't ever play it again though since I more than likely will.

As a form of interactive media there isn't much I can think of that could make it better as it's a great experience and very memorable. It's obviously not designed to be lots of levels with gameplay all the way through like the classic games we grew up playing but if you judge it for it's meant to be then it really is amazing.

Having said that though if you need more gameplay and fewer set-pieces then there's always the multiplayer which is great too.

I agree with Alpha's comment on diversity as I'm glad games like UC2 exist which are heavily story driven with set-pieces and also glad for having games like Demon's Souls which are kind of the opposite.

Anyone who actually loves playing games, which means playing all games on all platforms, can tell you it isn't the best game. But in my opinion, this gen, out of all the games I've played, this gen, UC2 does come closer to perfection than other games out there. But I just woke up not to long ago and may need to think of all the games I've played. It all boils down to preference and what you're looking for in video game entertainment. On a level of thinking that sees video games as art I could say UC2 is perfect along with some other games, but on a tech-douche bag level I wouldn't be able to say the game is perfect because I would be able to find a flaw in the overall game design.

"Uncharted 2 is NOT the best game this generation."

Its all an opinion. No need to force it on people.

The reason people/critics say this is the influence it will bring/already brought to future games. All around it is one of the best MADE games this generation so far. The story, graphics, gameplay, characters, music, sound design, environments...on and on...are all of utmost quality.

That said, Uncharted 2 isn't my best game this gen. I would give that to MGS4, because of the history I have with the franchise. Others will say Mario Galaxy 2, Mass Effect 2, Portal, Red Dead, CoD4. Its all an opinion AND this generation is not over. There are still soooo many games coming out in 2011.

"Personally, lack of a great gameplay is a fatal flaw in a game"

it's not, you have some movie masterpieces that you don't want to see again before years, others that you can see several time the same year, it's not a quality problem, it's just a different kind of great movies...same for the games.

DORMIN5543d ago (Edited 5543d ago )

I know there are a lot of people that aren't fans of U2's gameplay, but like I said above, you have to look at it from an artistic/game development perspective. The animation, the voice acting, the movie pacing, the level design are all so well done that MANY other developers will/have already been influenced by this. Thus, why we see so many news articles of developers say their game is of "Uncharted 2 quality".

In that way, I can understand, WHY many people consider U2 the best game this gen. But like I said its not my GotG, but I can see why a good majority of people say this.

Chaostar5545d ago

Whether or not Uncharted 2 is your top game or not is merely opinion it's definitely in my top five at least but I haven't really thought about it.

I severely disagree with your opinion that the game lacks replay value and has "basic" and "boring" gamplay. Not only does the game include multiple difficulty levels for challenge but also treasures to collect as well as unlockable tweaks such as zero-g for dead guys etc. All this AND a fantastic multiplayer experience that is very well supported by the devs.

As for the gameplay well, I'm having major trouble trying to think of a game that does stealth, shooting, cover system, CQC, platforming/climbing and set-piece interaction all together with such a high degree of quality.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the game is perfect but I believe "basic" and "boring" are VERY harsh criticisms. If I had to put it down I'd say there were a couple of moments where it wasn't clear what to do (i.e. when the helicopter shoots the building down with you in it ad you have to jump at last second) and some of the 'boss' fights just felt like 'running and gunning' a lot.

If I was forced to think about it I'd say Uncharted 2 would definitely be in my top 10 games of the generation... even maybe top games ever.

Neckbear5545d ago (Edited 5545d ago )

I mean, don't get me wrong, I completly loved Uncharted 2. My main problem is than, while it seriously is polished as hell, what kind of special, fun feature the game has?

For me, there was none. I played it first on Hard, and found Stealth to be the way to kill everything easily. After that, Crushing, and it was the same. Sneak up onto guy, kill him, sneak up onto next guy, kill him until you have to do a firefight, take cover, kill things little by little, platforming section, repeat through the whole game with some variation here and there such as puzzles and Quick Time events.

My main problem, as I said, is than the game simply tries to be an interactive experience too hard, and forgets that it's supposed to be a GAME, and a fun one at that.

I enjoyed my first time through Uncharted 2, but after that, it just felt like I saw everything the game had to offer, and the core mechanics were just too...basic.

Then again, it's just my personal opinion (Well, more like I felt about the game), as you said.

wildcat5545d ago

Next time, though, Drake will be base jumping off of cliffs and onto moving horses while being chased by sky-diving ninjas on motorbikes whipping around nunchucks like Bruce Lee.

hikayu5544d ago

umm .. define 2 things : a GAME , and a game that you LIKE .

first , you claim that this game is boring and basic , then you say you love it ? hypocrite
and then , you said that it tries too hard to be an interactive experience , and not a game . then what IS a game to begin with ?

first of all , a game IS An interactive experience . the game doesnt play by itself ( unless you're playing on wii , then i dont care ) , you have to put your input to progress .
2nd , it's a shooter . havent you play any shooter of the last , i dont know ... decade ? valve's portal is one of a kind , it's not comparable and far from the standard of the industry . most shooters only cares about 2 things : set pieces and playability . if you recall successful shooters of the past decades , almost all of them have simple mechanic . Cod and Halo as an example .set pieces is the other big focus of a shooter game . it's obvious that U2 nailed the set pieces ,so did Cod4 , Mw2 and such .

i think you're just not looking at this game from the correct perspective . it's more about the immersion , and yes , the interactivity tho scripted events of which the game offer . if you cant find it entertaining or unique , your loss . i dont think there's any other shooter like uncharted .

TKCMuzzer5544d ago

The main feature it had was you loved the game, it left you with a great experience when playing first time like a great movie, it's the fact you don't get the opportunity to relive that first time play through that is the problem.
That is far better than playing a good game more than once where you never get that feeling you get when playing through U2 for the first time.

fOrlOnhOpe575545d ago

no doubts that Uncharted 2 is a stellar title on the PS3 and after playing through on Crushing I never touched the SP again. However, ND turned out a pretty good MP game which I still enjoy - and will carry me through to Uncharted 3.

Bereaver5544d ago

Just understand what I'm saying is also opinion. I welcome yours, you welcome mine.

You're saying that it's not the best game because it lacked "fun".

But, that is the genre they chose. Just as daydream said, it just wouldn't have that same feel if it were any different. You could talk about how you wanted it to be different all you want, but then it would just be a different game.

Anyway, to declare a game NOT the best game this generation, you must have a different game or at least some games that are better candidates.

Which one/ones do you think have that rightful claim to be the best this gen?

Z5015544d ago

Which one/ones do you think have that rightful claim to be the best this gen?

This.

gaffyh5544d ago

Yes, this is what I would like to know. Because for me, so far, nothing even comes close to Uncharted 2 because it was polished on all levels, which many games can't claim.

Great single-player, great graphics, great sound track, great voice acting talent, great gaemplay, great story, and great multiplayer, and on top of that a pretty good co-op mode.

What more can you ask for?

If I was to only judge a game based on the gameplay alone, then the best game I've played this generation is inFAMOUS, it is amazing, but I wouldn't choose it if I took everything into consideration.

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Has Sold 7 Million Units

Bandai Namco announced today that its popular flight simulator-lite Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has passed another sales milestone.

Abnor_Mal31m ago(Edited 29m ago)

Great game, and deserves all its sales. Ace Combat has always been a great series. I should replay AC7 again for the fourth time.

It’s unfortunate that Ace Combat8 won’t have vr, as the devs felt it would be too much work and they would be essentially making two games.

Would love a release of Ace Combat6 on PlayStation, but I’d be fine with Ace3,4&5 remasters for PS5 with updated tightened controls.
