By now many of you have probably seen the PS4 and Xbox one in action, but is it truly the next big leap forward graphics and gaming? Let explain, some of you may be to young to remember, but I remember opening up my very first console, which was a Super Nintendo. I was 3 years old at the time and seeing this console for the very first time, I felt a tingling feeling of opening up this Christmas present. The feeling when you know what your seeing is something exciting and new, like that first car or that first paycheck, you know its going to be awesome.
I can recall putting the cartridge into the system and loading up super mario bros. Oh my gosh, I thought this can't be real, even though I was young it was still amazing to witness for the first time. Everything that resinated from the television screen consumed me. From the sound of mario jumping to the fireballs that shot from his hand, everything about this was amazing and so awesome. Eventually I got a PlayStation and Nintendo 64. Again I felt that same tingling feeling that what I was about to play and experience was going to be both breathtaking and real for the first time. I couldn't tell you the countless hours I would spend playing multiple libraries of games on each console over and over. The funny thing is that they never got boring and the graphics never really got stale for me.
Then we entered the second millennium, the big three debuted, which would define as the main consoles of that generation. Playstation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, this began what is known as the console wars, and everyone wanted to get their hands on it. Soon that feeling began to slowly disappear after a while, whereas before it was about innovation and bringing new ideas to the table now felt like a race to see who could beat the other. Whether it was through exclusive games or accessories, I felt like the joy that most gamers had felt when they were younger took a backseat. I certainly for one did not have the same feeling when I got a PS2 as much as I did when I got an N64.
However, I did find it within me to get excited for the PS3 and Xbox360 when they launched due to the massive upgrade in games and graphical design it was like opening that Super Nintendo for the first time. Now as we approach the next-generation of gaming I feel we are in the loop again where gamers, like myself, aren't all that crazy excited for the new systems. Although, they may bring brand graphic engines and gameplay designs I have this "been there done that" feeling that I can't seem to shake off. For me the graphics aren't that huge of a leap forward when you look at PS2-PS3 or Super Nintendo to N64. The gameplay design doesn't look like it has changed that much and don't get my started on Kinect or the Eye-toy (worst invention ever).
In conclusion, am I excited for the new hardware? sadly no, however, I am definitely looking forward for what's to come 10 years down the road. When I can finally get that satisfying feeling of wow and awe. That what I am witnessing is truly a technological step forward in gaming.

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
I'm excited about all of the possibilities that new hardware brings for us gamers
You don't often see much in the way of innovation and huge leaps and bounds gameplay-wise in the launch window, but to me there's plenty of interesting stuff set for release and we don't even have all pieces of the puzzle yet.
What do you look forward to "10 years down the road"? Plenty of people think consoles won't be around then (I'm not one of them!).
Maybe it's because you're just getting older lol I do agree with you though to some point.
I'm 25 years old and have been through the exact same feeling's of excitement as you have. Ever since I first got a Nintendo, then a Sega mega drive, Snes and then every console after that. Do I feel excited about the PS4 though? yes and no. I think it's because I'm a lot older now and cynical about everything. My favourite franchises have being ruined by publishers such as Final Fantasy and Resident Evil, then there's the whole DLC culture, microtransactions and other shady practices that have become the norm now. I feel as though gaming in general has suffered because of these things and that has put a huge downer for me personally on my excitement for next gen.
My excitement for the new consoles died with the fanboys.
I still am, just more excited for one than others. i don't worry much at all as i never pay any heed towards rumors and if something is bad enough it gets fixed/changed. if a console plays my games without a hassle or nickle and diming me then i'm excited for it, anything other than that is a bonus
