A (Better) Guide Into Buying WHAT Kind of PS Vita

My fellow Sony gamers, come this February 22, Sony will finally unleash a technological piece of unholy proportions from the divine halls of Sony Corporation! That technological piece, my fellow Sony gamers, is the Playstation Vita, designed to play movies, games, high Sony games that only Sony could provide, and your favorite, life-sucking social apps likes Twitter and Facebook. However, there is a considerable debate among yourselves in what Vita to get, especially since there is now a Launch Bundle Edition. In this blog of mine, written to help the classy, mature, and intelligent gamers aka the Sony gamers, the decision to get either the Wi-fi only or 3G Vita will be a bit easier.

To get you started, I've broken down the options including the prices (in US dollars and not including your respective territory's taxes).

3G Version (First Edition)
Includes: 4Gb Memory Card, 250mb free of AT&T Data Connect, a case, free Little Deviants game, a free Playstation Network Game, a week early release.
Initial Cost: $350

3G Version (Launch Edition)
Includes: Everything as the First Edition, minus the case, Little Deviants game, an 8Gb Memory Card instead of 4, and a week early release.
Initial Cost: $300

Note the word "initial" before the cost? That's because even though you will get a free game and 250mb worth (good for one subscription month) of AT&T 3G pass, you will have to sign up AND PAY $15 for the first month BEFORE you can redeem both the pass and the game. That means the final cost (sans games, accessories, and of course taxes and shipping charges) would be $15 plus the initial cost listed above.

Now, everybody should know by now that the regular PS Wi-Fi would cost $250, with some claiming "foul" that Sony didn't include any bonuses to go to the Wi-Fi "just" to move the 3G version of the Vita. However, you can make yourself an "unofficial" bundle that nearly matches the same benefit as that of the First Edition Bundle.

To do this, all you have to do is order the PS Vita Starter Kit (MSRP $39.99 http://us.playstation.com/p... The kit includes the following:

*Case
*4Gb Memory Card
*Screen Protector
*Card Case
*Head Phone
*Cleaning Cloth

With the Wi-Fi PS Vita plus the Starter Kit, your total cost would be $290.

So let's compare the 3 options and see the final cost (once again, minus the games, accessories, etc).

3G First Edition: $365
3G Launch Edition: $315
Wi-Fi: $250
Wi-Fi Plus Starter Kit: $290

As you can see, unless you really care for 3G, early release, and the Deviants game, the Wi-Fi version plus the Starter Kit offers the same as the Launch Edition plus more for a far less price. The 3G Launch Edition will net you 8Gb worth of Memory Card which is priced $40 if purchased separately, but to redeem the PSN game will still cost you another $15. Of course, being a handheld, you would definitely need a case (to protect your investment) and a head phone (as to not bother others) which would another $40 should you get the Starter Kit (lining it up with the First Bundle final cost wise).

So, my fellow Sony gamers, this means that the First Edition when compared to the Launch Bundle is pretty much pointless unless you really need the Deviant game and early release. For most, a Wi-Fi Vita along with the necessary hand held gaming essentials for less than $300 is just more than enough.

Please remember that blog was never meant to say that you shouldn't buy the 3G version. Rather, this blog rather points why the Launch Edition may be ultimately better than the First Edition, and why Wi-Fi-only purchasers shouldn't feel left out. Of course, the ultimate purpose of this blog is to help you decide which of the 3 Vita options is the one for you!

Nice breakdown, I decided a while back to switch my wifi only preorder to getting the first edition bundle, simpily because I can wait anylong to get my hands on my Vita. I will be going on a trip shortly after the 15th and would miss out on the launch day so its worth it to me to pay the extra cash.

if you get just the wifi version you cant take advantage of any of the 3g features. It isnt like you can add an aftermarket 3g chip inside.

Like people who had to decide on the 60gb or 20gb ps3. 20gb sure, it gives you bluray and the games like the 60 but it lacks the media reader and wifi. You can add a media reader but you cant add the wifi as easily.

So it was worth the extra $$ to get the total package. To me, the 3g vita is the total package. Even if i dont use the service after the initial month I can still game like the wifi only models but i will have the full hardware instead of just the basic model.

I completely agree. I wouldn't want a simi-gimped vita even if I never use the 3G features. The card reader on my OG 60 I still use from time to time.

I am much more comfortable that my vita will be able to do everything its meant to.

I was debating for awhile which model to buy, well for me I picked the WiFi model because I have a portable hotspot with 4G. With this I can actually game online on the go, have unlimited data, download games larger than a Mini, still have the ability to communicate with my friends, still able to browse the web, and...well I see no point for me to pay more to own this 3G model especially when it's associated with no less than a mediocre service, AT&T. Yes it's understandable to want the best of the best. But if PSP is anything to go by, future models could have improvements/additional features like a mini-HDMI port, more RAM, improved battery life, better screen, slimmer unit, etc.

What's the lowest AT&T data session? $15 for one month with a 250 MB cap?

For $20/month, I can turn my iPhone 4 into a Wi-Fi hotspot with no cap (unlimited data) on Verizon's network and connect with my Vita.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone. I'm buying the Wi-Fi model because if, somewhere down the line, the cumulative 3G features are enough to warrant use, then the hotspot option with unlimited usage makes WAY more sense to me.

@ the writer of this article. U put the little deviants game on the 300 bundle. It doesn't come with 300 bundle it comes with the 350 bundle.and the free psn game u don't have to buy a psn game to get the free game, u have to buy AT&T data to get free data pass. And the 300 bundle doesn't comes out a week early only the 350 does

macalatus5199d ago

Thanks for the heads up! I clarified the wording a bit, but my blog still originally states that the Deviant game is NOT in the 300 bundle, but I'll admit I forgot to add that in the 350 bundle and I didn't clarify enough in the 300 bundle description, leading to the confusion that it is added in the 300.

As for the PSN game, Sony explicitly stated that you would have to first sign up for AT&T and pay the initial first month before you can get your free pass AND free PSN game. So in a certain point of view the free PSN game is not really that "free" since it would still cost you $15 dollars (provided you get the 250mb data plan for the initial sign up) but rather as a "reward" for a "paid sampling" of AT&T's service.

I really want to get a vita but here in NZ the vita is overpriced. For example the normal wifi version its $450nzd (370usd)and 3g version is $550nzd (452usd) and we don't have any bundles like the first edition bundle.

I wanted to get it from Amazon but they don't import Vitas to NZ yet :(

If you're based in the UK and you opt for the 3G release you are seriously wasting your money if you think you will be able to play online using it.

I've been using smart phones for the past 3-4 years and I can probably count on one hand the number of times i've actually had a half decent connection to the interwebs when using it.

Waiting 30 seconds for google to load should be an eye opener for people not familiar with 3G. :)

arnyftw5199d ago

lol, do they have extremely bad connections over there?, because I can open it faster on my 2G phone.

caseh5198d ago

Yeah it isn't the best to be honest. There are some parts of the country where it's not too bad but as a general rule 3G is sh*t.

Usually I would be all for buying the best model available which is the 3G release, what people in the US don't realise is over here in the UK you're looking at spending in excess of £300 quid once you've paid for a memory card etc and thats about $450-$480, very pricey for a hand-held especially when that one function isn't a valid selling point.

paybackprahl5197d ago

I can't think of any online Vita game that will support simultaneous multiplayer over 3G anyway. Asynchronous, sure, but not actual competition / co-op.

TooTall195197d ago

They already stated there is no simultaneous mp over 3G. You need Wifi.

I'm curious as heck as to how the 3G-PSV will handle the extra drain on its battery. Heck with my iphone cell service off I can listen to music on it for over a week without charging, I can imagine the PSV's battery life will crap its pants once hit with the streaming.
